Have you ever wondered why mid-July-mid August in the Northern Hemisphere is called the “dog days of summer”? Those oppressive hot days where you feel like wilting is actually named for the star Sirius, aka “The Dog Star” which seems to rise in conjunction with the sun. Ancients believed that Sirius was so bright it actually emitted heat. They also though that the ‘dog days’ were from July 22-August 22, but the Old Farmer’s Almanac puts it at July 3-August 11. This got us thinking about dogs in general, our favorite breeds and rescue pups. Match the editors and contributors with their favorite dog and you can douse yourself with spilled perfume, in the comfort of your air conditioned home.
