मालती The Divine Feminine: Champaca + Ormonde Jayne Perfumery Draw

Throughout the centuries the island of Bali, has beckoned to the Western  world , bringing first the invading Dutch during the 19th century and in the 1930s the first trickle of European and American tourists inspired by anthropologists’ descriptions of the island as “an enchanted land of aesthetes at peace with themselves and nature”.

For many years Bali remained a paradise, …as far from Europe and the US as it is possible to be. However, travelers today are likely to be disappointed when they visit the island. Tourism has exploded, and land development is consuming the coastline. Traffic chokes the streets of the beach towns and it is difficult to visit the beach without attracting swarms of souvenir hawkers.

However, a short ride into the interior of the island reveals a secret that most tourists in the beachside megahotels will never see. Aside from a few new-age resorts tucked away here and there, most signs of the 21st century disappear with the passing miles. Instead of bustling towns, the visitor encounters peaceful villages where the only sound is a crowing rooster. Go deeper still and the inhabitants no longer speak Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of the country, but a mixture of Malaysian and Polynesian dialects. And for those with a passion for fragrance, there are more sweet-scented flowers than you may ever encounter in such profusion again. Massive gardenias, jasmine trailing from branches, frangipani trees…and champaca flowers. In fact, Champaca is found everywhere in Bali– from local Hindu legends to the hair of the beautiful saronged Balinese women.

Sometimes called the ‘Joy Perfume Tree”, champaca has been used in many scents, but  my favorite is Ormonde Jayne Champaca which doesn’t attempt to duplicate the smell of the blossom, but somehow improves what can be an overwhelming fragrance. By adding notes of pink pepper, neroli, musk and freesia Ormonde Jayne Champaca succeeds in bringing out the beautiful soul of the blossom and creating a perfume that actually smells better as the weather gets steamier, giving you at least one reason to go outside this summer…

For a chance to win a Ormond Jayne  Champaca 10ml travel pen , name a part of the world you would like to see for its unspoiled beauty. Draw closes August 7, 2011

  • Have always admired OJ’s Champaca – and overall, the olfactory style of the South East Asia…Have experienced Sarawak, Borneo, Guam and Okinawa, so far, not that they are completely uspoilt, but have not entirely lost the pristine beauty, from what I could have seen and felt. Sunda islands – Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Nusa Tenggara are next :))

  • I would love to visit French Polynesia for its sensual foliage, rustic beaches and wide array of rare scented flowers like the tiare Gardenia,
    Tahiti , more specifically.
Thank you for this opportunity . I would love to win the Champaca pen .

  • Oooh it sounds lovely! I don’t think I ever smelled champaca, at least it’s not a listed note in any of the fragrances I sampled. But with the other notes listed it has me very curious!

I’ll name a place I already visited a few times, but there are still tons of things that I haven’t seen there: I LOVE visiting both sides of the border between France and Spain. The quiet and tiny villages, the 14th century churches, the markets, the mountains… Some places feel frozen in time.

  • I really want to visit JeJu Island in S. Korea! The food of Korea is amazing in its complexity and smells…so I imagine that JeJu Island will carry some of that complexity as well…

I would love to visit Madagascar. Over 80% of it’s flora and fauna is found in no other place on earth….I know that it is losing its natural resources and there has been political upheaval. There may be little time left to visit and document this jewel of an island.

  • I’d love to visit North east India – Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim..
Champaca is lovely in the summer- I’d love to win the travel spray

  • I would like to just come upon an unspoiled place in my wanderings. An unsullied clearing in a forest, or an isolated stretch of beach. Doesn’t have to be another country to give you a sense of wildness.

I like Tom Ford’s Champaca and have wanted to try the Ormond Jayne.

  • Oh, there are so many wonderful places to choose from, but one near the top of the list is the Galapagos Islands. I’d like to arrive via the HMS Beagle. 🙂

I’ve never tried Ormonde Jayne Champaca and would love to be entered in the draw.

    Thank you!

  • I would like to be able to travel to Cambodgia- looking for places no tourists are interested in and feeingl the vibe
    thanks for the draw

Oh my answer has already been taken, but I long to visit Madagascar! It looks like paradise on earth, with the beaches, the orchids, the hundreds of species of birds and exotic creatures like the Lemur…the Baobob trees…With such geological diversity and interesting culture I would be hard-pressed to say no to a one-way ticket to Madagascar!

Champaca is gorgeous, I look the subtleness of it–it could represent an unspoiled paradise very well with its vuulnerable warmth, sweetness, and dewdrop clarity. Great post!

  • I’d certainly be happy with the already suggested French Polynesia, the Galapagos, and Madagascar, but I think I’d like to see the Maldives before they potentially disappear under the ocean. I’m impressed with what they have already done to regenerate coral reefs.
OJ Champaca sounds fabulous — maybe it will actually bring some warm weather with it if I should be so lucky as to win.
    Thanks for the draw opportunity.

  • I would love to explore Fiji’s islands one day.

Champaca is my favourite OJ and I’d love to own some. Thanks for the draw.

  • Ive wanted to visit Alaska, it looks so beautiful and largely untouched. So many places but AK was what came to mind first. Would love to be entered in the draw, thanks.

  • I dream of taking a cruise to Alaska. Everyone I know who has taken this trip can’t stop raving about the wild beauty of the Alaskan coastline. My MIL traveled & cruised extensively before she reached her very old age (she’s now 96); she says her trip to Alaska was the best cruise she ever took.

Please enter my name in the draw.

    Ann C.

  • I would love to go to see the coasts of Makran and Gwadar in the Province of Balochistan, Pakistan. The province of Balochistan is best know for its raw beauty of mountains and the sea shore and to add taste to it, its plantation of dates which is famous all over Pakistan.

I have read great reviews about OJ’s fragrances but haven’t got the opportunity to test them yet.

  • I’m a huge Ormonde Jayne fan and love the rice and freesia interplay in champaca.

There are so few places that are still unspoiled. I would like to go to the Seychelles, if I could pick from any of the pure places left in the world. These amazing islands have all sorts of aquatic wonders (cuttlefish!!) and in my mind, they smell like OJ’s Frangipani and Tiare.

  • I love Ormonde Jayne in every single scent she makes!
I would love to spend long sunny days exploring the beaches and lush jungles of Seychelles Islands!! It looks and sounds like paradies to me!

  • Denise Smith says:

No one would consider Kentucky exotic but the hills and
rivers are so lovely. When I was there I did not look
    closely enough.

  • Leslie, I have to agree with you. Having been to the Ubud area of Bali numerous times, I can think of no place more beautiful. I am overwhelmed by the beautiful sights and especially, the smells, when I go there.

  • I would love to go rockhounding in Greenland, friends have done that and come back with wonderful stories…. And champaca is a fabulously weird floral, isn’t it?

  • I love champaca and wish I had more than my tiny sample. OJ has such wonderful perfumes. I wish there was a retailer/ distributed in the u.s. I would wear anything of hers while exploring the Greek islands.

  • Maybe Tahiti, since my mother spoke fondly of it (and promised one day to take us there). That was my idea of what I dreamed growing up to be exotic.

  • Enter me, please!

I would absolutely love to go to Cap Ferrat. I want to be somewhere lush, green, and with beautiful water!

  • After watching TLOTR, I became interested in visiting the mountains of New Zealand. They looked beautiful and unspoiled. I hope making the movie did not affect them.

I’d love a chance to win a Champaca pen — I am a huge fan of Ormonde Jayne. My favorite for cold weather is Tolu, for Spring is Frangipani and I would love to wear Champaca in the Summer! Just kidding. I do not divide fragrances by seasons so strictly, but I cannot decide which one I love more, Tolu or Frangipani. They are both my #1s so far. I haven’t tried everything in the line… not yet…

  • I want to see the Maldives while they are still around. Champaca is a gorgeous summer fragrance. And the basmati rice note is so unique. A true work of art, this one.

  • I’d like to see New Zealand rainforests. I know there are lots of beautiful birds there, and there are still species to discover 🙂

I’d love to try Champaca. Thank you!

  • Yes, there are many “hidden” parts of Hawaii that are totally unspoiled. By chance, that’s what I was going to say was my wish: to go see more of the hidden Hawaii (once , on the Big Island, a friend and I went skinny dipping in a gorgeous fresh water pond in the middle of a jungle, and we were the only two people there). I love Ormonde Jayne fragrances, especially Champaca, Woman, Tolu, Orris Noir and Ta’if.

  • I’ve always wanted to live in New Zealand; everything is there. I don’t think beauty can be completely spoiled; try to spoil it, lose focus for a while and it takes over again. Fields become forests, the elements break down concrete, grass grows through the cracks, and trees aren’t far behind.

Champaca was my first love from OJ. My favorite year-round scent is Ormonde Woman, but Champaca is best for warm weather.

  • I’d love to see Kamchatka, the geyser land, much less developed than Iceland or Yellowstone.

  • chayaruchama says:

I have many dreams- but care of my family comes first, always.
I want to explore Papua.New Guinea, boat down the Amazon, climb Macchu Picchu, languish in Tierra del Fuego, visit Nepal.

[I already own Champaca; when Isaac was in London, he chose it for me.]

  • I would love to travel to the Maldives for a real deserted island feeling. Champaca is absolutely gorgeous.

  • I would like to explore rural alaska in the late summertime, my last visit was too short to get away from the cities and I was still amazed by all of the berries and wildflowers.

  • I can’t think of many places that have unspoiled beauty. Man, has pretty much left his mark, everywhere. I like Shanna’s (above) place. I’m going to say the same. Rural alaska. I wouldn’t want to go anyplace hot.

  • Iceland of course, most amazing place in the universe, emho!
    Thank you for the draw.
