Nearly two years ago, natural Perfumer Charna Ethier, founder of Providence Perfume Co. opened her store at 301 Wickenden Street in Rhode Island  . To celebrate national Small Business  Week  May 4-8, 2015 , I chose to feature Charna , Our ÇaFleureBon 2014  Hardest Working Perfume Person embodies the spirit of a true entrepreneur

December 25, 2014, I wrote “This year Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume opened her own retail shoppe and gets a special award as "The Hardest Working Perfume Person of The Year," as she balances her natural perfumery (this year Samarinda, Bay Rum, six perfume oils as well as natural beauty products), her family,  teaching classes, managing both a brick and mortar and e commerce business on her own, without corporate backing”  Now in 2015 she released Provanilla, possibly the best natural vanilla perfume I have smelt.

This gentleman had never smelt a natural perfume before

During the past two years, Charna has been educating her mainstream clientele about the beauty of all natural botanical fragrances; most had never experienced them before. Her business is growing and she has an assistant but it still is a 24/7 job.

"As a small busowner, my greatest  challenge is that every dollar I make I reinvest into the store and my perfumery. You have to wake up morning and say I absolutely love what I do. That is my advice to anyone thinking of starting out on their own. It must be your passion, and be prepared to work harder than you ever imagined”, Charna says.

Good afternoon. I am torn between Moss Gown and Samarinda. The notes in Samarinda sound divine. Sweet orange and cardamom for spring. Yay. On second thought… It’s definitely Samarinda.

Congratualations Charna. I have the utmost respect for those who have a dream and chase their passion. I also find it admirable that you not only practice the art of perfumery but teach as well. We need more of that stateside. It’s inspirational.

I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

Congratulations Charna!!! I had the pleasure of meeting you when I visited your shop for my birthday back in April. You are so sweet, and I can’t wait to take one of your classes.

Unfortunately the one that I really like (Gypsy) has been discontinued 🙁 but I also adore Cocoa Tuberose, so that would be my choice.

I also just started following on instagram (zoe06082) and I am in Connecticut

Congratulations on following your dream, Charna! What you do is inspiring!

Thank you for the lovely draw as well. I was going to say Ivy Tower would be my choice, but I now see that that one is a perfume oil. I will have to sample that one soon… Osmanthus Oolong in EDP sounds equally as lovely. I am in the USA, thank you again for the generous draw!

Congratulations Charna! Running a small business is a huge amount of work and combined with the time it takes to create new scents it must be just exhausting. Keep up the good work.
I admit to not having tried any PPC scents on skin but I have smelled Moss Gown on someone else and it was amazing, so it would be my choice.
    I live in the U.S.

  • May 7, 2015 at 5:31 pm
    Marcopietro says:

Congratulations Charna! I know your deserved reputation, but I never found the opportunity to try your perfumes. I’d like to test on my skin your Tabac Citron or Rum Bay. Both summarized in a few simple ingredients, but with a strong personality and wearable by a man.
    I live in Italy.
    Thanks for the draw!

I am more than certain that Charna is still deserving of the award for Hardest Working Perfume Person, and I am delighted to extend both my congratulations and my appreciation for her hard work and entrepreneurial spirit.

If I were to win the draw, I would choose Ginger Lily, because of my love for ginger and spices. Someday I must also try Moss Gown — it, too, sounds so lovely.

    I am in the US.

    julesinrose says:

Congratulations, Charna! I, too, would choose Tabac Citron. It’s one of the few I haven’t tried of PPC’s, funnily enough, but it sounds wonderful!!! In the US. Thanks for the draw!

Congratulations, Charna! We’ve never met, but it seems like everyone who has met you wants to mention what a great person you are. That is so inspiring. I wish you all the success in the world.

I’m in the US, and I choose Branch and Vine, because I’ve never gotten to try it, because I’ve heard such wonderful things about it, and because ’tis the season.

I’ve never used instagram, but if I figure out how, I will definitely follow you, and I’ll try to use my same username, leathermountain.

Congratulations on taking a chance and following your dreams! I’m in the US, and my choice would be Samarinda.

P.S. I was the lucky winner of a bottle of Tabac Citron back in early 2013, and I wanted to let you know that I still reach for it all the time. It’s really fantastic.

    L.Matheson says:

I love so many of Charna’s perfumes, in fact there aren’t any I dislike, only ones I love above others. They are wonderful and Charna is so efficient with sending out orders and incredibly generous with her knowledge. I am in Australia so would love to win the sample size of Provanilla. Sounds amazing and thanks so much for your passion and hard work. Us natural perfume obsessives greatly appreciate your enthusiasm and efforts!!! P.S. I forget where I read it, but I thought your self-depreciating comment about maybe whinging too much as to why you won the Hardest Working Perfume Person highly amusing. Of course it’s not true, but very funny 🙂

  • May 8, 2015 at 2:15 am
    fazalcheema says:

My choice among Charna’s creations would be Rose Boheme because it seems kind of dirty rose which may even come across as leathery to some..it also has oud which can give loud personality to fragrances and I do enjoy loud when it comes to rose..So many congrats Charna..I even have difficulty memorizing all things you manage by yourself because the list is so long 🙂 best of luck in everything you do and whatever goals you may establish in the future. Really appreciate your generosity. I am in the US

Congratulation Charna! I’m very glad cause you can work in that job what you love. It’s a wonderful thing.
These perfumes are all sounds incredible. I’m not really can chose only one among these lovely scents. I think maybe Cocoa Tuberose sounds the most particularly interesting.
Thank you for this fabulous draw!

    Mujo says:

Congratulations Charna. It’s a rare and beautiful gift if you truly love what you do.

As for my choice of fragrance. I’m going back and forth on a perfume I might (or not) win. Anyway, it’s so hard to choose. My go to choice would be Bohemian Rose, but Moss Gown sounds so alluring too! I’ve been reading reviews to make up my mind, and the winner is Bohemian Rose! The, by some reviewers described, horse stable note (probably due to the agarwood) won me over. I am a registered reader. I live in EU, the Netherlands.

    Thanks for this wonderful draw!

I think Charna is gorgeous and talented, and I love her whole presentation, from her shop to her website and packaging. When I purchase a personal care indulgence, I want those aesthetic touches that make it feel like a gift to myself, and Charna delivers with a charm that reflects her Rhode Island setting. I admire Charna’s focus in achieving such a lovely brand.
    Cheers and congratulations, Charna!
30 ml of Tabac Citron would be a fresh, welcome addition to my sunny Colorado summer!

    Carol W says:

Congratulations Charna! It truly does sound like you are a hard working woman!
I would choose Divine – hard choice! I love orange and vanilla notes and have just learned that I like musk! and it smells good on me. The musk is what pushed me towards Divine. Branch and Vine sounds wonderful as well and that may be something I need to gift myself.
Thanks for the draw! I’m in beautiful Southwest Michigan!

    Cynthia says:

I already own Samarinda, Moss Gown, Divine and Gypsy, so part of my challenge is finding one I don’t own. But it would be Hindu Honeysuckle. I think it has such a perfect name. I have sampled it, and for me it combines the scented memories of some of India;s holy places; the sweet smell of the flower necklaces you place around the diety statues, combined with a whiff of insence. Truly lovely. I am in the USA.

    Valentine Girl says:

I can’t think of a person more deserving of recognition for her incredible success than Charna. She is an inspiration for me in my quest to enter the world of natural perfumery, as she embodies the spirit that anything is possible if you believe in yourself, have a passion, take a risk, and be prepared for the blood, sweat & tears of the journey! I would love to meet her in person & take one of her perfumery courses, so I am actively saving towards a “perfume class” fund to take that first step in following my bliss.
I would choose Bay Rum because of its historical & cultural association with Rhode Island and as a natural “wanna be” perfumer, I love the extra touch of adding a leaf of Pimenta racemosa to each bottle which continues to infuse the cologne with its botanical essence. Plus summer is coming and I love wearing spicy colognes when it’s really hot outside. Congratulations Charna on your incredible achievement and I look forward to being a student in one of your classes soon! USA (Baltimore) resident.

Congratulations Charna! I respect the amount of work that must go into developing such beautiful natural creations and establishing a viable business.
I would love to sample the Hindu Honeysuckle. I spent much of last summer house-sitting for my sister and loving the late afternoon on her honeysuckle-draped patio basking in the glorious scent.
I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw offer.

    Congratulations Charna!

I live in the UK. I’ve already tried Moss Gown, Divine Noir, Branch & Vine and Osmanthus Oolong (my favourite). I think I’d pick Cocoa Tuberose to try next, because I’m keen on tuberose, but it’s a hard choice between that and Rose Boheme.

Thanks for the draw. I’ve followed on Instagram (username containing ‘chihuahua’).

    Natalie says:

Congratulations Charna! Running a small business is difficult, and your products are amazing.

I recently bought your sample set, and love both Branch and Vine and Provanilla. I also love Lavanilla, so didn’t think it was possible for a vanilla to compete with their blends, but you’ve done it. Provanilla has an aquatic tone that is AMAZING.

If I win, I’m going to go for Moss Gown. It’s a real gamble, but it sounds incredible. And even the scents that didn’t make the top 2 are lovely, so I figure I can’t loose if I win… *grin* I just can’t resist trying another of your creations.

    I’m in Canada.
