CaFleureBon’s 1st Birthday: “Guild”ing The Lily+’George Benson’ Draw

March 22, 2011March 24, 2011

Two of CaFleureBon's friends in fragrance have supported us from Day One. Anya McCoy, the President of the Natural Perfumer's Guild (La nez of Anya's Garden) and Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz, the multi talented perfumer, artist and jewelry designer and owner of DSH Perfumes ( A NPG Member).

Anya McCoy

Dear Michelyn and the wonderful team of Ca Fleure Bon:

Happy First Birthday!  Your salon-style blog captured my attention from day one because of the luscious visuals and poetry and prose that accompany each review and interview.  It truly is unique and groundbreaking in its approach to perfume news.

Maṇḍala of Time: (मण्डल) is a Sanskrit word that means "circle"

My birthday gift to celebrate the Ca Fleure Bon anniversary is a reformulation of StarFlower, my best-selling perfume.  Heavily indolic and gourmand, I wanted a  perfume that that can serve as the daytime version.  I generously doused the formula with orange blossom, Michelyn's favorite floral, upped the tuberose, and tweaked some more.

I named it "Timeless" in honor of the aesthetics and style of CaFleureBon, which stands out as a unique blog/salon because of the inclusion of artwork from all the ages, literature, poetry and a fusion.  This is something I had never seen before in a perfume blog.  Each post is a revelation of sensory delights, with the images and words invoking the perfume being described.

With love,

Anya McCoy

 Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz

When I think of CaFleureBon, my first thought is of a love of artistry and of luxury.  The same holds true for  E-I-C, Michelyn Camen (and everyone at CFB, actually!).  So, when considering a perfume to commemorate this wonderful magazine's first anniversary, I was immediately drawn to a luxurious gourmand oriental; something that would make Michelyn swoon using notes of her beloved orange blossom, bergamot, mandarin, passionfruit, sweet absinthe (as addictive as CFB), cognac, cassie flower, rose absolute, sambac jasmine, benzoin, tolu balsam, sandalwood, patchouli, labdanum, vanilla, and caramel.

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec: Woman with Black Boa

As I often work from 'visual briefs', I found inspiration in a glorious Toulouse-Lautrec drawing of a Parisian woman (have you ever noticed that one of MC's favorite artists is T-L?  Well, I have) and this magnificent vintage black opal sapphire and diamond ring. The results?

A decadent oriental perfume, bottled in vintage French flacons, hand embellished with stones and precious metals and a series of necklaces to correspond.

I named the perfume and the necklace series "Lautrec", created especially for CFB birthday bash!  Truly one of a kind.  Just like CaFleureBon.

A heartfelt Happy First Birthday,

DSH (aka Dawn-deer)

Please note there are  FOUR draw offerings:

TWO .15ML LTD. EDITION OF 'TIMELESS' BY ANYA McCOY

ONE 15ML OF LAUTREC PARFUM EXTRAIT BY DAWN SPENCER HURWITZ

"LAUTREC" NECKLACE BY DAWN SPENCER HURWITZ: The stones for the necklace in the giveaway are: Peruvian & Australian black opal, Swarovski crystals, rock crystals and 14kt yellow gold-fill.  The use of black opal is inspired by its rare beauty, the variations in 'sparkles' of colors represent the distinct voices of the CFB writers and editors.

Please leave a comment on what you enjoy most  on www.cafleurebon.com and your favorite fragrance on Anya and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Please specify if you want the necklace only, the winners of the fragrances are random. Lautrec is 25ml and Timeless is 15ml.  Draw ends March 26, 2011

Editor’s Note: Happy 68th birthday to one of my favorite jazz musicians George Benson

I am new to your site. it is beautiful… It seems I found it on an auspicious day.. your birthday.  My favorite article of all time is  Live from NYC its Bertrand Duchaufour by Michelyn Camen. I am interested in the necklace for my wife !! I admire her perfumes especially Cimabue. I have heard of Anya Mccoy’s Starflower and it sounds beautiful

My favorite CaFleureBon articles were the Mystery of Musk and Outlaw Perfumes projectsof the Natural Perfumers Guild. Through those projects I was introduced to some talented natural perfumers and my old favorites like Anya and Dawn showed me new tricks. Among all of the wonderful things that happened in this first year for CaFleureBon it is always learning something new which makes me happiest.

A very heartfelt thanks to all of our readers who have supported us and allowed CaFleureBon to grow into what we have become. I'm looking forward to Year Two of our fragrant journey. I wonder what surprises are ahead.

I loved the Outlaw perfume articles..so many things are banned now that make perfume beautiful. As for the scents? I don't think I've had the pleasure of trying anything by Anya, but DSH is one of my favorite houses. I own dozens of scents. My favs right now? Cimabue, Nourouz, Vintage Patchouli, Dirty Rose, Minuit and sooo many others. I would LOVE to win Lautrec, but would be happy with the Anya's too. The necklace is stunning but I have metal allergies that prevent me from wearing such beauty:) Happy blog b-day:)

I love the articles on this web site along with the art and music videos.  George Benson is from my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA (This Masquerade – my favorite of his from the Breezin' "album") and I loved the Nina Simone video.  The Outlaw perfume articles were very interesting and I enjoyed reading them.  I have never tried any of Miss McCoy's fragrances but I hear wonderful things about them.  I own DSH's Bois du Chocolat which I love.  I also love Cimabue and Parfum de Grasse. Many more birthdays to you!

As a high school teacher, I really appreciate the quality of the articles- and the way the authors often weave together history, art, and culture into their perfume reviews. I've never seen another site like this one!! Also, I find myself being exposed to an entire universe of fragrance that I would never have been otherwise…As for Anya and Dawn's perfumes, I've never tried them- but Lautrec sounds very, very interesting…very Bohemian…Toulouse Lautrec has always been one of my favorite artists and I would love to see what his eponymous scent is like…

What a wonderful draw!  My favorite cafleurebon.com articles – interviews with perfumers!  I haven't tried many of Anya's or Dawn's scents, but I love Anya's Kaffir (wow) and Dawn's Piment et Chocolate.  Oh, and I see a few have mentioned Parfum de Grasse?  I have a vial of this!  I had no idea it was Dawn's?!  (Need to take a closer look at that label.)  Getting it out now…

Without the participation and involvement of so many  –Cafleurebon wouldn't exist .
I loved many posts: Outlaw and MOM, The Orchid Thief, Marlene's Shalimar, , all the interviews…
I'm grateful to be a part of this burgeoning on-line scented salon.
[ I love Dawn's jewelry, but I don't want to be a hog ;-)…so I'd kill for the Lautrec, if truth be told ]

I've only been coming to this site for a couple of of months. First dropped by due to a link on waftbycarol's blog (thanks Carol) to check out one of the interviews and I continue to love these insights into the perfumers. I also enjoy the reviews (and the different personalities of the editors and contributors) and being introduced to all the perfume houses. But what is most enticing is the mix of references to literature, film. music and popular culture (including that fun Super Bowl article!) and most especially all the art (Arcimboldo was a revelation to me). I've had fun over the last couple of weeks going back over the archives and entering some of the draws.
Currently my favourite Anya's Garden fragrance is Ambresse. I don't have a favourite DSH fragrance yet — I'm looking at Dirty Rose and on a very different track, Viridian.
As for the draw, I would love to win the necklace — it's gorgeous. I would not, however, be disappointed with either of the perfumes as a prize.
Congratulations again on a great first year and continued success for your second. Thanks for all your hard work and the passion you share with us.

Dear Cafleurebon, and all of the people who make it so wonderful,

Happiest of birthdays, and I wish you more to come!  I love coming here, not only for the caliber of writing, but because it reminds me in so many ways of a Music History class, taught by my dear Dr. Robert L. Larsen.  He was not content with just discussing music and the composers.  He felt it was also important to learn about the literature, art, dance, history of the times as well.  So we were "forced" to read books, look at works of art, and read ancient tomes of knowledge.  I will forever be indebted to him.  He could cram a 2 hour lecture into 50 minutes…all from memory.  He taught me that life is not unfolded in a vacuum.  It is made by the times in which it lives.
I love the interviews the most.  It is for me, like peeking into the soul of a fellow perfumer.  It gives me an insight into the person behind the perfume, and that is priceless!  I too, loved the mystery of musk, and outlaw perfumers series.  It's fascinating to see what many different people can do with the same requirements!
The time and love that is put into each article is evident.  You can tell that the people, who are the writers, care very much about the perfume, and really in the end, that's what it's all about.  The Perfume.

I would be so pumped to win anything from these wonderful artisans!  I haven't had the pleasure of trying either Anya's or Dawn's line, however, I have drooled over my keyboard at times reading about them 😛
Anya has done so much for new beginners with her tireless efforts to help people learn about Natural Perfumery!  She runs the yahoo NP group, freely of her time, which I am certain she has many other things that need attending too, and there are so many FREE resources available to the beginner.  The yahoo group was one of the first places I discovered on the internet, when I was just getting my toes into the pool.   The contests she organized have gotten great press for the Natural Perfumery world, and the absurd nature of the IRFA "restrictions."  I hope that I can make half the difference that she has, someday.

Happy Birthday!  I love to read the reviews and the support that you give to natural perfumers is so lovely.  I am a big fan of Anya's and I would love to try Timeless.  I also have sampled many of Dawn's creations and admire her artistry.  I love the opal inspiration.  When I create a perfume I have often compared the way the essences intermingle and flash and change with the way a precious opal always changes.  Opals are a passion for me, as are perfumes.

I enjoy all the articles on Ca Fleure Bon, but my favorites are those written by Ida Meister – her writing style is a perfect reflection of her warm personality.  I haven't had the pleasure of trying Anya's fragrances, although I know from my blog readings that she has many fans.  I've sampled a couple of Dawn's, enough to know that she is a very talented perfumer, and I have ordered several more samples from DSH that are on their way to me now!  I'm drooling over that necklace – if chosen I'd love to win it, or either of the fragrances.  Thanks for including me in the draw!

Congratulations on your fabulous lead up to Cafleurebon's birthday!
What do I love most about it? Dawn has expressed it beautifully, the interweaving of artistry, poetry, and luxury.  Reading Cafleurebon every morning with my first cup of coffee is my daily dose of beauty, and a great way to start the day!
I only recently ordered samples from Anya, and I have not made my way through many of them yet, but so far I would say Moondance stands out as my favorite. She is a talented lady.
DSH is a line which I know far too well. I have a box dedicated to her samples and bottles. I would say it is easier to name the DSH perfumes I don't like, rather than the ones I do. But if I have to pick: Oelliets Rouge (the best carnation ever), Parfums de Luxe, Parfum de Grasse, and my favorite spring scent, Essencis dell 'ibisco.
Thank you for offering all these wonderful draws!

    Anya says:

It's wonderful to be part of Ca Fleure Bon's first anniversary!  Michelyn and the team have poured their hearts and souls into this salon, and I and the members of the Guild truly appreciate their support. Dawn's necklace is a knockout!  I'm so glad she went the step further and expressed her creativity and love of CFB this way, and the winner will treasure it, for sure.
One little correction:  I only offer 15ml bottles, which is half an ounce, not .50ml, which at first glance looks, at least to me, like 50ml.  So, to make this giveaway a little sweeter, I'll offer FOUR 15ml bottles of Timeless.  Sometimes a little typo turns into something better 😉
    Good luck, everyone!
    With hugs,
    Anya

Happy Birthday to CaFleureBon! I enjoy reading the blog, of course, with its wide-ranging references to the best of the best in the world of fragrance. Also, the generous giveaways are very exciting!
I think what I love best is the inclusion of well-chosen illustrations, musical and video clips, and most of all, photos and interviews with talented perfumers. It's a complete world of culture, fragrance and luxury at one's fingertips. CaFleureBon is now at the top of my home page where I keep (Google gadgets of) my favorite blogs.
I have not yet tried any of Anya's scents, but intend to. Isn't she a doll to make the offer of four 15ml bottles of Timeless! I hope that I may win one… I am a subscriber to her Natural Perfumers Group on Yahoo and enjoy reading the posts there. Anya's knowledge of natural perfume ingredients is most impressive.
My favorite fragrance by Dawn (there are so many) is currently: Dirty Rose. I was very happy to see a photo of her jewelry creation–it is gorgeous!

What do I like best about CaFleureBon? Hmmm, that's a hard one. Like others, I love the interviews, the artwork and music and history in the posts, the poetry, the phenomenal amount of giveaways ;), and the fact that there's posts to read everyday.  But I find what I appreciate most is the diversity of the perfumes reviews: Yves Rocher is reviewed just as beautifully as Xerjoff,  and posts about unknown-to-me indie outfits come right after a classic Guerlain.
I haven't tried any of Anya's scents yet, but my favorite DSH right now is a toss-up between Piment et Chocolat and December.

    Happy birthday, CaFleureBon!

I particularly enjoyed the Outlaw Perfume articles and was lucky enough to acquire one of the Outlaw Perfume samples set! I feel like such a rebel wearing all of them but I was drawn to Ambress created by Anya for it’s scentuality and warm spiritual lightness of being. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAFLEUREBON!!!   hmmm…I should have brought confetti…..
I'm so grateful to have found your site , although I don't think I'll ever get thru the archive of reviews and articles from your first six months (when I was woefully unaware!)  I try to stop by everyday to see what's going on, I may not comment everyday, but I'm here nonetheless.  My favorite thing? I love the pictures! Is that bad to say? (I'm college educated, I swear, Dean's list all 4 yrs!) but I always scroll thru the artwork first…then I go back and read. What can I say, I'm kind of visual.  You guys (and gals) may talk perfume but at heart you are artists in a general sense, it's easy to tell even if the focus here is scent, it's always been clear to me that scent is the trigger but other forms of art are intrinsically involved.  hmm….I do believe I'm beginning to ramble, so I'll say again what I dropped in to say:
Happy Birthday, many more and thank you.  ~Ruth
    oh!  you're having another lovely draw….I don't know much about Anya's scents…Timeless sounds delightful.   I ADORE Dawn's scents….I have several and there's tons more I want…. I'm practically drooling over Lautrec even now.  Drooling, I tell you! it's a little embarrassing…. 😉

I love the ease of use of Cafleurebon. Meaning the uncluttered layout and the use of timeless visual, musical and literary references.
Anya's Kewdra as I've already mentioned is really a must have for me. I use it sparingly and I should really just order another bottle so I don't have to. I've sampled her Starflower and would love the chance to try the version that is "Timeless".
I've read a lot about DSH but have yet to try her perfumes. I've gotten as far as making a list of ones I'd like to order samples of though!

I have enjoyed the articles, the photographic and artistic accompaniments to the articles, and I must admit…the opportunity to win wonderful fragrances!  Cafleurbon is really the whole package!
I've not had the pleasure to smell any of Anya's perfumes, though they sound wonderful.  Regrettably, I have also not had the opportunity to smell any of Dawn's work since the early-mid nineties, when I used to visit her shop.  I was so fortunate to have some lovely custom creations made….I don't recall their names, but my favorites were a heliotrope and also an incense blend.
Please enter me in the draw for a perfume!

My favorite articles were the Tango in NYC and the interview with Sergio Momo of Xerjoff, I really like all the interviews, and I've never tried any of the Anya or DSH fragrances, so I'd like to be entered in the fragrances draw. Thanks and Happy Birthday!!!!

Really enjoy the multi-cultural perspectives and the warm hearted approach to everything perfume related. Cafleurebon is a welcome beakon of inclusivity, where a perfume newbie and a fraganista can share and come together.  On that note Anya's Timeless is calling my name.

Happy Birthday! I lurk ona variety of perfume blogs but I love reading the reviews of natural perfumes, which seem particularly tricky to me and there's little aesthetic criticism in the area. Thank you so much for your work here.

Happy Birthday, dear Cafleurebon, happy birthday to you!  How glad I am that I have discovered this blog!
What I enjoy most about Cafleurebon is the variety of reviews, science (can't forget that oud article!), personal impressions (and pure poetry, yes), art, the giveaways and how SEAMLESSLY they are put together.  I believe that this is the most sophisticated perfume blog around.  I am an art lover, I love to engage my restless intellect as much as my comfort-seeking senses, and Cafleurebon helps me to do just that, as well as to embrace the contradiction of such an enterprise.
I have a specical spot in my heart for Dawn's perfumes, and it will be difficult to pick a favorite, but if I had to pick — Mahjoun it is!  Anya's I cannot pick since I never tried any, so I'll pick the one I'd love to try most, based on the notes, and it is Pan (being named after Pan does not hurt either, I guess).
I'd love to enter for Lautrec, it's impossible to resist an opportunity to try a Dawn's limited edition created specifically for Cafleurebon!  But to try something from Anya's Garden is priceless, since I've never had.  If I must choose, Dawn is my first indie-perfume love and my first choice though!
Happy birthday again! (I actually planned to post this yesterday, but did not finish typing the post).

I really enjoyed the interviews: Maurice Roucel, Bertrand Duchaufour, Sergio Momo, they are really interesting and give us an idea of what are those genius noses thinking, I hope to keep getting more cool interviews here. I'd like to be enter for the prfumes, and I never try any DSH or Anya's so is a great opportunity to do so.

Happy birthday! I love all of the different voices and perspectives. And I am a sucker for interviews.
I can't choose a favorite. I'm such a DSH fan girl. I like Cafe Noir and Cimabue. Anya's are lovely and I haven't tried them all. I'm currently smitten by Kaffir, Light, and MoonDance.

I love being able to connect with others with the same passion…The writers and contributors all do such an awesome job. The artwork oh the artwork fantastic, combines 2 of my passions, I am sure that there are many others. Every article and review are informative and stimulating. Love seeing that NPG members are getting such great support, and reviews. My Favorite from Anya is StarFlower followed close by Moon Dance. I still have to try something of Dawns but Lautrec sounds like another winner to me. Congratulations on an awesome year to all of you at CaFleureBon keep us all inspired for much longer please.. Dawns necklace sounds amazing… so much talent and thanks to you all for sharing.

This may sound silly, but I enjoy that the articles are spaced well–I don't find myself reading a 10-page blog post here! The way the art is integrated into Ca Fleur Bon is wonderful–like a gallery of perfumes and perfumed conversations instead of another op-ed type of perfume blog!
I have never tried any of the Anya's Garden perfumes, but  Star Flower sounds divine, as does Kewdra and Fairchild.
I have tried some DSH perfumes, and LOVE Route d'Iris and Songbird. That Lautrec Extrait flacon is stunning, I can only imagine how beautiful the contents are. Toulouse-Lautrec is one of my favorite artists too!
And I love George Benson, but Pat Martino is my favorite jazz musician : )

This is my first visit to Ca Fleure Bon and I am already a fan. I am not familiar with Anya's work yet but have tried many of Dawn's lovely fragrances and so far count Majoun and Oude Arabique among my favorites. I am dying to try Vert Pour Madame and would be honored to have a gorgeous bottle of Latrec extrait to enjoy. Thank you for the opportunity to enter!

Happy Birthday Ca Fleure Bon. What I love most are the reviews of the natural perfumers. I wear only natural perfumes for the past few years and have fallen in love with many perfumes that you have reviewed here on your site. My favorite scents by Anya are Moondance and Starflower. I would be interested in trying Timeless to smell the influx of tuberose and orange blossom from the original Starflower. Sounds divine.

It's hard to say what I love most about cafleurebon–the visual beauty, the intelligence with which it's written, the way it stretches its readers to think–but if pressed, I'd say I'm most appreciative of the support you've given to artisan botanical perfumers.  From reading the notes, I'd say my favorite perfume of Anya's woud be Pan and my favorite DSH would be Mystery of Musk v.2 (Musk and the Mosque.)
Happy B-day again, Cafleurebon!  You sure know how to throw a party.

i love the interviews on CaFleureBon and the unique style of the blog.
my favorite from Anya's would be Kaffir (lime.. yum!!!)
my favorite from DSH is definitely Cuir et Champignon, so unusual and beautiful!

the necklace is jaw-dropping… can I enter for the necklace as well?
(of course i'm interested in fragrances, too, but couldn't _not_ to ask.. wow)

I cannot say enough about This site, its really so wonderfully done. I love how Dawn say that when she thinks of this site she thinks of artistry and luxury, just like her beautiful fragrances. Look at the beautiful artistry in the necklace…….amazing. Either Lautrec or the necklace would be such an honor to win.

I enjoy the dogged pursuit of some of the industry's best perfumers such as Maurice Roucel.  (Tangoing with him, no less!)  There are so many fragrance blogs out there but CaFleureBon gets the interviews with the artists (perfumers) and the goods.

    Susan says:

Definitely the interviews by far – makes the site more unique among fragrance blogs. I just put in my first DSH order, trying some of her rose fragrances (#2 and #3 from the series). Haven’t tried Anya.

Dawn – the necklace is stunning!!!!! Did I out in enough "!!!!!!!!'s?  I keep telling myself I have to try Moondance – such a lovely name….what would be not to love? Dawn knows I have a special place in my heart for her Route d'Iris. At some point we should start negotiations on a never-ending lifetime supply.  The Lautrec sounds to die for (as the kids used to say) – citrus, absinthe (ooh), cognac (bring it on!), mum's favorite flowers (she'll miss her tuberose, dontcha know), woods (Yay!! Lots of woody notes!!). Life is good at CFB.

I follow and read the CaFleureBon  blog and follow on FB because she has such interesting posts and I learn a lot more. She inspired me to do more on fragrance and talk to more fragrance people about their  inspirations and how they create.
From Anya I love the  Fairchild and Temple.. extremely different fragrances and while it might sound odd – I wear stuff based on what I feel and how I want to feel.. because I know that fragrance has an emotional impact on me
From Dawn- besides that gorgeous necklace (Woman.. do you do everything so perfectly?) There are many fragrances I love.. the chocolate series, the pepper one particularly, but the Lautrec or anything with cognac sounds amazing..  I love the Mata Hari.. but have to wear it when I am feeling in that "mood" because it's a strong dynamic scent.
there are so many reasons to follow the blog/site and also to follow CaFleureBon  on FB because it's nice to dig deep into scents because nothing changes your outfit, your personal presentation like a scent that you wear that empowers you and makes you feel great.

    Happy Birthday!
I would love the chance to be gifted with any of the prizes celebrating the first birthday of CaFleureBon!
I have had the chance to experience many of Anya's perfumes and they are amazing!  I haven't had the chance to experience Dawn's work, but it sounds wonderful as well!
