CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Nikki Sherritt of Rebel & Mercury Botanical Perfumes + New Way Home Draw

Nikk Nikki Sherritt

I am a Te xan living in Seattle, WA so that should tell you so much right there.

I was born and raised in Dallas, which is, truly, unlike the stereotypes you see played out on TV and I am not your typical Texas girl (no big hair and not much of a Texas accent). Growing up there, I spent so much time outside digging in the dirt, mixing up concoctions of mud, rocks and leaves from the trees in my grandmother’s back yard; that the smells of grass, dirt, Summer rain and the roses that bloomed in my Grandmother’s backyard, are very strong scent memories for me. I wasn’t really introduced to the world of perfume until later in life, but I have very strong scent memories of the people with which I grew up. I remember that both my Mother and Grandmother both smelled like Powder to me. My Grandfather always had the smell of metal and sawdust from working on houses. These are the scents I remember from my childhood in Texas.

My career didn’t start out in the fragrant world at all. I started work at Arista Records while in College thinking I would go into the Music Business for life, but ended up working as a Freelance Film Producer on Music Videos and TV Commercials and I am still in that business. My love of all things fragrant actually started with a cooking class in a small town in Provence. I refer to it is my “fragrant light switch”. I fell in love with the French style of cooking and how passionate they are about food, wine and fragrance. I returned home and started my company, Gabriel’s Aunt, which is a perfumed candle line and then, Rebel & Mercury Botanical Perfumes 5 years later. I love that I can have two distinctly different careers and 2 distinctly different product lines. Gabriel’s Aunt plays to the lighter, light-hearted, don’t take life to seriously part of me and Rebel & Mercury plays to the more serious, passionate, intense side of me that wants to make a statement (I am a Gemini!). I love the Film Business and the creative inspiration it gives me to run my candle and perfume companies. It also taught me how to be organized and to not be timid when going for what you want (you can’t be a wallflower in the Film World). I love both aspects of my life and wouldn’t do things any other way.

David Grohl and the Foo Fighters

American Artist: I am not drawn to a particular American Painter or Photographer (most of my obsessions in that area are French artists it seems), but my true love and inspiration comes from good ole Rock & Roll. I am a rocker at heart (hence my stint in the music business) and love the Foo Fighters. They have been the soundtrack of my 20’s and 30’s and music that doesn’t follow anyone’s rules. I love the fact that they can rock my socks off and also make me laugh. In my next life, I would be a chef during the day and a rock star at night. Most of the time, when I am not on set, I am working on my perfumes and candles while listening to bands like The Black Keys, MGMT all the way down to the greats like Billie Holiday or Louis Armstrong. It all inspires me.

Being an American Perfumer is incredibly exciting right now. There is such a buzz about niche and indie perfumers that the energy of it is palpable. I think most of us can agree that Mandy Aftel made it incredibly cool to be an Indie Perfumer and single-handedly brought the art of natural perfumery back en vogue. She did all this with grace and style and I will forever be in her debt for introducing me to this art with her books. I really feel like people want something unique and made by an artist (not in a lab). American Indie Perfumers are at the forefront of creating incredibly unique, powerful and beautiful blends that are made by their own hands. It is truly art and I love the fact that you can wear it. Many of the women I admire most are also fellow perfumers, Meredith Smith (fellow Texan) of Sweet Anthem, Janna Sheehan of Trance Essence, Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume and so many others. The list is long and I am proud to be in their company.

I think it’s great that a cooking class in Provence spurred her love of perfume. I think perfumery, cooking and wine are all very related arts as they are sensual arts that are meant to be enjoyed and savored.

  • I found it interesting how she so treasures her childhood memories and scents, especially of her Grandma. The Cerise En Cocoa sounds amazing!

  • Janet in California says:

I love the combination of rock and roll with perfume! Many of the roll-ons sound great but Encens Blanc is my choice.

  • I love that Nikki has two different fragrant outlets, one that works for her more relaxed side and the other for her more serious and intense side. I’m a Gemini as well and I completely understand this. 🙂 I would love to try Bohem roll-on oil, it sounds amazing!

  • I also like how the cooking class spurred her into perfumery! Parloir is the scent which I find most intriguing.

  • Go Texas! Her description of fragrance memories from her childhood conjured up my own of freshly mowed lawn, dirt, and oh the summer rain! I was really torn between Groovy Garden and Encens Blanc but I’ll go with Encens Blanc =)

  • Linnea Wiedeman says:

i love the connection she has with rock and roll and perfume. i think groovy garden sounds nice.

  • Love that she took naming inspiration from astrology, it’s so cute. I’m quite fond of Gemini too.
    And Boheme sounds just lovely.

  • i had NO idea Nikki was such a rocker; nor of her work for Arista- another layer to her artistry!

i always admire the distinct personalities of Gabriel’s Aunt and Rebel & Mercury… Gemini, indeed!

would love to have some Summer Love(in’).

  • I found Nikki’s scent memories fascinating. I do believe our first associations are through scent and that can greatly affect the path we take, as it surely did for Nikki. Encens Blanc sounds so interesting, a summer night filled with honeysuckle and ending with woodsmoke/vanilla~ divine! Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • Amberosmanthus says:

I love hearing about the other interests that somehow spark the passion for perfumery. Music and perfume have such an intrinsic relationship even down to the notes and chords and compositions.

I have tried a few Rebel and Mercury perfumes and love Vanasque! I would dearly love to try Boheme.

  • I love the fact that Nikki is so multitasking:a fragrant candle line, completely separate from the perfume line as well as the regular job as a freelance film producer. Impressive!
Many of her roll-ons sound great and I’m torn between Boheme and Encens blanc. Since I don’t have a white flowers scent in my collection , I will opt for Encens blanc.Thank you!

  • I gets good feelings over the spirit of community independent perfumers seem to have. there’s obviously lots of mutual respect between Nikki and the women she name-checks at the very end.

Bring on the Bohem, which sounds divine.

  • i love that a tangent interest sparked a career. and interesting how much her gemini sign is showing by having two distinct lines and two different professions. love it! i am interested to try bohem. thanks!

  • Growing up in Texas then working in the music business, and on top a cooking class was the inspiration for the career and having 2 seperate projects, trully amazing!! Keep up th great work!!! I would like to try most the Cerise En Cocoa A roll on, thank you so much for the draw!!

  • I loved hearing about how Nikkis inspiration comes from Rock and roll 🙂

If I win I’d love to try Boheme. Thanks for this draw!

  • I didn’t know Nikki worked in the music business. I did for many years, and I know of several other perfumers who did, too.

I’d like to try anything light/citrusy/floral (any of those categories) by her.

  • I think its a brave decision but hell- a logical one to run two companies to satisfy two directions of thought or ambience. Indeed its a very Gemini inclination. I enjoyed reading that about Nikki. Boheme sounds just lovely to me! All the best Nikki!

  • Love that Nikki is a rock and roller! Summer Love sounds wonderful to me.
Interesting that Anya worked in the music business also.

  • Stephanie says:

I really liked how her journey wasn’t just about perfumery, but that there’s the context of her interest in music and film as well, and what her experience there has contributed to what she does now. Also, how rich her scent memories are! Nikki sounds like one cool lady, and ditto with her scents. I can’t decide whether Parloir or Encens Blanc sounds more intriguing, haha.

  • Great that Nikki decided to run 2 careers doing what she loves. I can see where music and film intertwine with fragrances, creativity is definitely needed for both. All her fragrances sound so lovely, but i thin my choice would be Var en Provence.

  • I think It’s really interesting both that Nikki came to scent creation through taste–cooking class in France indeed!–and also that her creative side came out in the recording industry and in film. Music has always felt very intimately related to scent for me. Her journey to perfume sounds a little more twisty and interesting than most, but like most perfumers and possibly perfumistas she has strong childhood scent memories. Her line looks so good! Thanks for the profile.

I would choose Encens Blanc if I won because it sounds like nothing I have or have sniffed! So many look so so good, especially Bohem, Zeste, and Parloir!

  • Heather P says:

I love how wiggly and unexpected her path has been; I think that makes for the most interesting people. I’d love to try Bohem!

  • Her first fragrant memories seem to have foretold her evolution into a natural perfumer.

    Encens Blanc rocks!

  • I happen to be in a scented candle exploration phase as well as a Black Keys phase (so funky!) so ‘meeting’ Nikki was one familiar delight after the other. Can’t wait to try some of her perfumes, and Bohem would be a nice starting point.

  • It’s nice to read about another relocated Texan. I grew up with many of the same scent memories she describes. Summer Love sounds like something I could love. Thanks for the draw.

  • It’s just great how cooking helped her start her perfume passion. Nothing smells better then a delicious meal.

Cerise En Cocoa sounds really yummy.

  • I love how Nikki used to make “botanical mud pies” as a child! I used to crush pears with rocks, mix with mud and bark and line aluminum pie tins (from snack pies) with leaves for crust for “Dirty Pear Pie”! 😉

Var en Provence sounds amazing! thanbks for the chance to win…

  • Love the photo of your grandmother and the inspiration from childhood memories. I remember coffee, lemons and onions frying. 🙂 I also never heard of Janna Sheehan of Trance Essence or Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume. I will check them out.

  • I have been fortunate enough to sample not only Nikki’s candles but her perfume. I have not been disappointed yet. One I haven’t tried is Bohem. Sounds like one I would love. Thank you for the draw and the lovely article.

  • French cuisine as a launch pad for perfumery: how beautiful!

I’d love to try Encens Blanc.

    Thanks for having this draw and also for dispelling our negative stereotypes about Texans. (-;

  • Alyssa Taylor says:

I love Nikki’s candles! I’ve been purchasing them for a few years now!
I relate with the part about Nikki mixing and squishing up plants and mud into smelly concoctions, that was one of my favorite things to do as a little girl on my farm too.

Summer Love sounds too good not to fall in love with.

  • Perfume Lover says:

i enjoyed the bit about the black keys. i
m from the akron area. 🙂

    bohem if chosen please

  • I always enjoy knowing what music perfumers listen to when they create!

    Parloir sounds smashing!

    😀

  • I can so relate to the Gemini aspect of life– having a moon in Gemini! We always have to have 2 lives going on! on some level.
I loved learning about Nikki’s inspiration and I think she is a fabulous creative artist!
    Encens Blanc sound divine!
