CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Mair Emenogu of Mair Fragrances + Remember When Draw

Mair Emenogu

Mair Emenogu of Mair Fragrances

Profile: My parents came to America in their early 20’s from Nigeria with hearts filled of hope at getting a better education and starting a new life. Both of my parents constantly emphasized education as the ticket to opportunity to me and my four siblings.  I was born and raised in Houston, TX and for as long as I can remember have always been the jovial kid that could not keep quiet or stop laughing. My nickname from elementary to high school was "giggle box".

As a kid I was more interested in performing arts than my classmates were.  I started playing violin in second grade and joined the school choir the following year. In my teenage years, I taught myself piano and would let my fingers roam free on the ivories for hours. In my mind I always thought the most amazing thing I would ever become was a singer. Growing up my role model was my father. When I was 16 I made a wild, ambitious bet with him wagering that I could graduate college with a Bachelor’s degree in 2 years.  Shortly after that he died of an incurable cancer.  I made good on my promise to him and graduated when I was 20 from the University of Houston with a concentration in Corporate Communications and Marketing. My corporate jobs were all in marketing for primarily oil and gas companies.

I got started in the art of perfumery from my signature.  I had a tendency to sign documents with my initials (ME). I was working at the front desk of an engineering firm shortly after graduating college and my initials offended a delivery guy to the point where I had to prove those were my initials by pulling out my driver’s license. After that incident I decided to finally come up with a signature. The minute I created one I liked a Vice President of the company named Van Wilson walked through the doors, saw it and said, “Mair, I can see this on a perfume bottle,” in the moment nothing special happened, but three days to a week later every time someone would say my name I would hear perfume instead. For three years that mental association kept occurring until I decided to actually take a leap of faith and dive head on into perfume making.

I went to all the local grocery stores in my area that had essential oil aisles and would stand there and smell all the oils noting which scents I liked and which I did not. I drew a lot of my inspiration from my travels in the US and life experiences. I was not formerly trained in perfume nor does it run in my blood line, I learned to blend scents from simple web searches and online videos.   Prior to me diving into perfume making I was a perfume addict and avid lover of fine fragrances. When I would walk into a department store my first stop was usually always the fragrance counter.

The many different samples(57!!!) that Mair tested before she dedided on the final fragrance Remember When

57 is the magic number when I think of my fragrance. That’s how many revisions and different blend mixtures had to happen before locking down on the scent of what is now Remember When.

Perfumer Fred Cohen

Perfumer Fred Cohen worked with Mair on her new fragrance

In hindsight, I did not care about the number revisions getting so high; I cared about putting out a scent that was something I could wear. I did not create the scent with “them” in mind, but “me”. It is a scent I wear daily and currently I just cannot spray anything else on because I am that in love with the unique fresh blending of citrus and floral notes (Italian Bergamot, Jasmine and Amber) my Perfumer, Fred Cohen and I conceived.

On American Perfumery: To me, being a niche perfumer means taking the wearer of my scent on an enjoyable olfactory journey through rich, notes that they are familiar with while sprinkling in a few notes that are not as common. However as a perfumer, I personally think that how a person feels while wearing the scent is equally important as the creativity of the scent.

miami beach perfume

T Miami Beach was a source of inspiration

My inspirations for my first scent, Remember When came from my trip to Miami, Florida and the strong relationship between scent and memory. Miami Beach has a particular scent and when I got back to Houston  I was walking past a store in the mall and the scent of the store immediately took me back to my time spent in Miami, hence the name Remember When.

But his work inspires me, not for who he paints, but rather the heart behind it. I feel connected to the emotion of his portraiture work; he paints them in such a way that you instantly feel what the person was feeling in that moment

i’m impressed that Mair made 57 revisions before finalizing the scent. I admire her tenacity to perfect it for herself. I love all the notes – it sounds incredibly feminine and breezy. The price is really affordable for a 100 ml bottle, too.

I am also following CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery on FB.

    I live in the U.S.

Thanks for introducing me to Mair and for offering such a wonderful giveaway!

  • It’s so interesting that Mair actually got her start through her signature!! A lot of people overlook signatures, but I remember spending a lot of time developing a signature I liked and practicing it. Perhaps that makes me a narcissistic psycho, ha! Either way – it shows that she really knows herself – the same way she only wears her own perfume because it fits her perfectly. I like the CFB profiles page. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • No need to enter me, but what a delightful profile! It’s the American Dream come to life. I her giggle box nickname. And her perfume sounds wonderful. Love the bottle and aesthetic!

Do you think we could get her to dish on her lipstick someday?!

Mair has had quite an inspiring life. I was, especially, moved by the fact she did graduate from college in 2 years, just as she had promised her father. Her parents came to the US for a better future and Mair didn’t let them down. Mair’s path to perfumery has been quite unusual, giving credence to the idea that sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected places. Mair is probably the first one of Nigerian origins in the perfumery industry that I am aware of. All the best wishes on your perfumery path and thanks for the generous draw. I am in the US.

  • I’m completely amazed by Mair’s story of creating a fragrance with no formal training and that is so inspiring! She had to passion to step out on faith and make her perfume dream happen. I’m sure that her dad is very proud of her for graduating college in 2 years and creating a great fragrance.

I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I love Mair’s story! She sounds like such a positive and inspirational person. It would be an honor to wear one of her creations! I love that childhood photo of her and the nickname she was given!

I admire her passion and determination to pursue her dreams. I also admire her quest for “perfection” and that she won’t stop until it’s something she’s proud enough of to wear herself. I like how she judges a creation on whether it’s something she would wear, as opposed to thinking of others in a way that would render a fragrance too formulaic.

I also love the diversity that we’re starting to see in perfumery – no longer a world for just French trained male noses!

I would be honored to wear one of her creations! I live in the USA, thank you!

  • It’s amazing that she makes such great fragrances without any formal training. What I found amazing about her personal story is the child of immigrants having such a successful career in America. I would love to try one of her fragrances. I live in America.

  • I’ve read a lot of your perfumer profiles, and this is the first one I can remember that started with a written signature instead of “I grew up in Grasse…” or “Everyone in my family wore fragrance…” or “My fondest childhood memories were good-smelling things in the kitchen/garden/forest/wherever.” It’s fantastic that Mair created a signature scent for herself, and as a lover of citrus fragrances I’ll order a sample of Remember When if I’m not lucky enough to win here. Thanks for the drawing! I’m in the US.

  • Passion and perfectionism – the ingredients for creating something special. Throw in a quick sense of humour and happy outlook and you have an unstoppable combo. I’m sure we’ll see great things. Congrats to Mair for having the courage to follow her dream. Please enter me for the draw. U.S. Please.

  • Mair’s path in perfumery is really impressing since she made 57 versions before her final version of her scent came into realization! I love her perfectionistic nature since it is a trait that makes one better in what ever they do. Also the notes of this perfume are truly very feminine!
I also found her life very inspiring because she graduated from college in 2 years, just as she had promised her father. That’s the spirit!!!
I followed Cafleurebon in Instagram and Mair too.
I am a registered reader living in EU, Greece and I thank for the lovely review and draw as well.

  • I like the idea that Mair knew what she wanted and held out through 57 tries! I also like that she enjoys the end product so much that she wears it constantly! It sounds lovely and I would love to try. She really created her dream and I admire that! I am in the USA and have liked the FB page in the past.

  • Wow Mair made 57 versions! I think that is amazing and it’s inspiring. I’m sure the finished product is incredible. I’m in Canada and thanks so much for the draw.

  • I am impressed with her ability to get through school in 2 years and her willingness to go through 57 renditions before deciding on her final fragrance. The notes in this scent sound beautiful and I would love to smell it. I am in the U.S.

  • It is inspiring that Mair could honor her father’s memory by finishing college so quickly! It was a story that touched my heartstrings since my fiance’s father died of cancer while he was in college. Of course, on the balance this journey to perfumery was more uplifting than not, and the citrus-inflected fragrance sounds uplifting too. Kudos to Mair for producing a fragrance she’s proud to put her name all over! I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • I found Mair Emenogu’s path to perfumery fascinating in that it is different from many of the other artists we’ve learned about. I enjoyed learning how her life led to the creation of a fragrance “with ‘me’ in mind”. I’d love to wear it! I live in the US.

  • What a great woman! So strong and determined and I’m so happy for her success!
