CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Jane Hendler of Ajne Perfume + Bohemian Rhapsody Draw

Profile: I grew up the youngest of four in the suburbs of Chicago.  My grandmother was one of the biggest influences in my childhood.  She was a true renaissance woman.  She was filled with creativity…sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, making jams and pickles…there was always something amazing that she was creating.  This type of creativity was truly inspiring to me and she would teach me everything she knew.  She had a beautiful garden filled with roses and other fragrant botanicals.

Often she would throw out a blanket in the front yard under the Magnolia tree where she would create a picnic lunch for my friends and me.  I can still remember the smell of the Magnolia mixing with the warm summer air.  I also have fond memories of playing with my Barbie dolls next to the lilac bushes – the fragrance was divine!  It was here that I first began my love affair with perfume.  As I realized that all of my memories in life were associated with scent.

I began modeling at age 16 which lead me to Japan, then on to Fashion Design School.  California soon called out to me, as I am a Bohemian Hippie at heart so at the age of 19 I made the decision to move to San Francisco.  Here I began working with a beauty products company that imported one of the first French essential oil lines to America and I had my first taste of the utter magnificence of pure essential oils.  I was overtaken by the pure scents of Jasmine, Rose, Citrus and Sandalwood. I was hooked and began thinking that this was my calling but didn’t quite know what to do with it.  After a trip to Grasse, I was convinced.  But not knowing exactly how to pursue this I eventually decided to go back to my design background and became a jewelry designer.  It was not until almost 20-years later that I rediscovered my love of perfume and with it, my Bohemian heritage.

Jane and Rex Rombach  wedding and honeymoon

On a vacation to Mt. Shasta my husband Rex Rombach and I shared a dream of creating real plant-derived fragrances. We decided that I would go to school to become a master essential oil therapist and organic perfumer and he would plant an organic farm on our ranch in Carmel Valley, California and study distillation.  4-years later Ajne opened our first boutique and laboratory just off the famed Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

My Bohemian heritage has always had an influence on my life.  After a trip to Prague I was convinced that this Bohemian look would be our design style.  I loved the idea of bottles wrapped in hand made filigree each like a piece of jewelry.  This made sense to me as each of our perfumes is handmade and our bottles should be as well. So when it was time to create Ajne's signature bottles and our famous perfume pendants I knew exactly how they would look.  All of Ajne's bottles are handmade in the Czech Republic by village artisans.  Each bottle hand-wrapped in gold and silver filigree. It's a labor of love from start to finish.

Favorite American Artist: We’ve also incorporated the amazing artists of Carmel, in our work. I particularly love Plein Aire, which involves landscape views, flowers and gardens. My favorite artist is Christine Crozier who is a local plein aire artist. Our house and store are filled with her work

On American Perfumery:    I think it’s wonderful how vibrant and well-received American perfumery has become.  There was a time when people thought that only the French could create liquid magic and now there’s a niche movement in America where passionate perfumers like me are creating there own collection and enjoying huge success.  This is perfume that comes from the heart and soul. When I stand in the fields of our farm in Carmel Valley and take a deep breath it stimulates not only my soul, but also an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system.   The   fragrance of natural plants and essential oils are literally written in our DNA and this is an important part of natural perfumery. They are scents that our ancestors smelled, so they truly have a strong effect on our emotion and memory.  I know the roses I smell now are the same that my grandmother smelled. This grounds and connects me to the earth and her spirit. It may be a long way from the suburbs of Chicago but the smells of lavender, rosemary, citrus, sage, geranium, jasmine and rose remind me of home and happy childhood memories.

Jane Hendler, Perfumer and Founder of Ajne Rare & Precious Perfumes

Editor's Note: I have known Jane for six years, we have met twice and  I am very proud to have  worked with her in formulating and naming  Lakshmi,  (after the Hindu Goddess of Abundance). Lakshmi is an oriental gourmand and is the most  expensive fragrance in her collection. • I think it is completely awesome that she is doing her whole business and practicing art hand-in-hand with her husband, and that the bottles (which are gorgeous) are hand made by Czech artisans! It was also wonderful to read that she is so in touch with her spirit and the Universe…

If I had to choose ONE it would have to be Adonis! (I saw no choices listed by it only 1 oz perfume…but if possible I would love a square bottle with silver filigree). No matter what it is in though, I am sure it will be stunning!!!

Thanks for the wonderful and generous draw and sharing your story with us! 🙂

I found it interesting that she studied jewelry design and has incorporated that aspect into her natural perfume business.

I would choose Adonis in a square bottle, I don’t know if this counts as a “DAB” bottle as none are marked that. If what you meant was a “splash” bottle and you are limiting choices to that, I would choose OM, as that is listed as coming in both a spray bottle and a splash bottle. I would choose a square bottle.

  • I find it amazing that thanks to her modelling job, Jane could visit Japan at the young age of 16. With her obvious creative aim in mind, she must have felt mindblown there! I choose Yuzu, in the golden round bottle.

  • With that amazing perfume talent she has, its hard to believe that she almost did not follow her calling. and decided to go back to jewelry designing….It was not until almost 20-years later that she rediscovered her love of perfume and with it, her Bohemian heritage. And a talented perfumer she is. My choice would be hands down Lakshmi and amazing perfume aphrodisiac, originally created for Michelyn. And a beauty it is. Gold tone for me in round bottle. Amazing draw.

  • I was most intrigued by something Jane mentioned in the last paragraph. The bit about notes being experienced and passed down from generation to generation, that they are ancestral. This just struck me as a truth I hadn’t considered. That, we share experiences tied to scents on a societal level as well as individual.

Awesome interview. Ajne is one I will be keeping an eye on. I particularly respect that they distill oils themselves. I’d love to see the process.

If chosen I think I would most enjoy 3rd Eiger. The Eiger Sanction is a favorite movie of mine, and the composition sounds lovely.

    Thank you for the draw.

  • Christy C says:

I was particularly interested in the fact that she begins talking about her perfumes by referencing her experiences with her grandmother, and her grandmother’s creativity in areas typically associated with the home and the female realm of that time. That she begins her story of a rather glamorous life full of world travel with that very warm and homey experience with her grandmother was a lovely reference. It was also interesting to hear how she looked for and incorporated artisanship both from overseas and local to her area.

I would be interested in trying Fleur Blanche in a round bottle with gold. Thank you for the draw!

  • The Prague connection was interesting to me, as was the fact that the fancy bottles are made by Czech artisans. If I were to win, I would love to try Lakshmi. Thank you for the drawing!

  • d3m0lici0n says:

This is the third profile in American perfumers where the person comes from a therapy background. Her story is fascinating and the way she presents her creations are awesome. Everything is artisanal: perfume and bottle. Her limbic system part of the interview is the most interesting part. I need to find more info about it. I would like to chose Adler from the Unisex Collection. Many thanks.

  • I thought that her background as a model and jewelry designer was fascinating but it must be in the DNA as Jane mentioned her grandmother had such a profound influence on her
Since her fragrances are based on the chakras then I will go with om silver
I also never heard of the limbuc system and pleine air art
Supporting local artists and artisans in the Czech Republic is more impressive than her celebrity clients

  • I love how Jane associates all her memories with scent and how she acknowledges how scents affect our emotions and memory. I think it really beautiful how she says “I know the roses I smell now are the same that my grandmother smelled. This grounds and connects me to the earth and her spirit.”

I also absolutely love the fact that she really is involved with the entire process from growing the plants, to distilling them and then continuing to create the perfumes! Her products really do seem to be a labor of love!

I would love to win the Lakshmi oil in the round BoHo.

Thank you for this fantastic article and amazing draw!

  • taffynfontana says:

I found fascinating how she persevered and followed her dreams even if they were not easily realized. She has a drive and tenacity that is admirable. I would love to win Lakshmi I have been dreaming about that scent for some time now. In round gold. Thanks again

  • Tourbillion says:

I liked that she talked about how American niche perfumes are gaining in popularity. I hope that I will really like her line of scents. I think that I would love to try Lakshmi in the square Paris dab if Michelyn Camen doesn’t mind me hijacking her scent!

  • Ooo Psyche is calling to me! In the black heart dab bottle pictured. Mmm champaca, bergamont and roses! Talk about list of my fav notes! Plus all her bottles are sooooo pretty.

“The fragrance of natural plants and essential oils are literally written in our DNA and this is an important part of natural perfumery. They are scents that our ancestors smelled, so they truly have a strong effect on our emotion and memory. I know the roses I smell now are the same that my grandmother smelled.” Was my favorite quote from the article.

  • I love the way Jane Hendler creates perfumes that seem to affect the human psyche..and how she supports local artists and true artisans from villages where she has attachment for.
I would love to try Lakshmi in the round golden boho bottle.
    thank you for the draw..

  • Thanks for the draw! Love how Jane uses her memories and scents to create fragrances. Would like to win Adler, silver in the round bottle.

  • I love many of Ajne’s parfumes.
Great post. It is impressive, her attention for details : extraction, cultivation, bottles. Very interesting. Also I found interesting she was a jewelry designer. I guess you can see that on the beautiful bottles.

Divin sounds great. Gold and round.
If that is not an option then Printemps would be great.

    Thank you !

  • ringthing says:

I think it’s most fascinating how all parts of Jane’s life, especially collaborating with her husband, have all synchronized to become this perfume creating endeavor. Also how she recognized herself as a true bohemian early on and has lived her life in that spirit. I’m also impressed by how reasonably priced these creations are, esp. w/their beautiful bottles!
I would choose Savoir in a round Bohemian dab bottle w/silver. Thanks for another great draw and read!

  • I loved how this is a mutual endeavor between her and her husband; that she studied perfumery and he studied distillation.

I would choose Om in a square bottle with gold filigree.

  • noetic owl says:

There was so many things that were interesting about Jane’s life but what resonated with me was that her segue into perfume began when she was a model and worked for a company that imported essential oils to the USA. I can understand how she was floored by the exquisite beauty of pure essential oils and I would love to try one of her creations. I have been eyeballing those bottles for two years now! I would love to try Sublime in a round bottle with gold filigree, should I be so lucky to win 🙂 !

  • just breathe says:

What I found interesting was that her career as jewelry designer helped to create those gorgeous bottles that house her “nectar”. I also love that she employs village artisans to make her bottles. I would love to try Nectar in a gold, round bottle.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I had the pleasure of getting to know Jane during a recent collaborative project among natural perfumers, and she is a delight. Her background, artistic sensibility and passion for natural perfumery are well-captured by this interview, and I found out many things about her I did not know. The business model that she and her husband put together, based solely on their passion for fragrant plants and the magical liquid we can coax from them only adds to my respect for Ajne.

  • I loved that Jane gets to work with her husband, that they support each other. I loved the quote”The fragrance of natural plants and essential oils are literally written in our DNA and this is an important part of natural perfumery. They are scents that our ancestors smelled, so they truly have a strong effect on our emotion and memory. I know the roses I smell now are the same that my grandmother smelled.” . I would love to try Lakshmi in round gold bottle.

  • thank you for the draw!
everything seems to be fascinating about ajne! a talented , beautiful lady! i like that she brought such a nice and tender homage to her grandmother whom she credits as the biggest creative influence in her life.should i be so lucky to win the draw i’d love to try lakshmi in gold round bottle! it’s a total eye candy!

  • tomatefarcie says:

Well she definitely grew up close to where I did. I grew up in a Bohemian neighborhood in the western Chicago suburbs and it shaped my life as well. I also came to California at a young age….so a fellow traveler….
My choice would be “Desire” round, gold.

  • winstonsmith4 says:

Prague connection was interesting to me, as I lived there for a year. I would love to try Lakshmi, in round Gold bottle — thanks!

  • The part where she disclosed how her supportive family decided she would go to school while he planted the farm becomes even more amazing when you learn that the process continued for four years until it became reality. If that kind of admirable diligence is also present in the perfume (and apparently the bottle designs as well, wow) then any one of these choices is going to be superlative. I choose Bloom de Nuit in the round bottle with silver accents.

  • Kamajasmine says:

Lovely profile of a very passionate perfumer
There were quite a few quotes that are memorable but the connection she and her husband share is beautiful
That is why I choose Bella in a square boho in silver
I have read a lot of great reviews about this line in forums so I hope I win and onCaFleureBon so I hope I win

  • Paul Bunch says:

It is interesting that she was so influenced by her grandmother. I find that grandparents can be a big influence, mine were in my life too. I can’t imagine what it would be like to not have that in your life.

I also think it is great that she is in to organic oils. A square bottle of Printemps in silver would be nice.

  • Lovely article, and an interesting read.

I particularly loved the way in which she connects certain parts of her life to a certain aroma, like her childhood days spent playing under the magnolia tree.
I also half relate to her love of both jewellery and perfume, and I like that she has incorporated both into her life of work.

I would love to win ‘deLavande’ in a silver, round dab bottle. Thanks!

  • I love that Jane retains memories of lilac and magnolia from her childhood. She was imprinted as a perfumer at a tender age!

I would like to try Lakshmi. Round gold sounds nice.

    Thank you for this draw.

  • I find it interesting that every product of the line is completely handmade, from distillation to blending to bottle manufacturing and bottling process. I especially like the fact that Jane and her husband produce many of their prime materials.

As to the choice of perfume I am confused. I would like to try Roshambo but it seems that the only unisex perfume available in a dabber is Om so I will go with that in gold. Thank you!

  • I am repeating myself here, but I so love the profiles series. The portraits are always done in such a caring and beautiful way, that you feel that you are listening in on the conversation.

I loved the way she describes the way that the DNA of smell is inherited in us all. And her close connection to her grandmother, who is described with such deep emotion.

I would choose Printemps because of this marvellous description “Printemps (Springtime) is a complex, soft floral reminiscent of the blossom-filled Parisian air after a spring rain” AND it strengthens the heart chakra.

Thank you for the draw and the profile:-)

  • I love that her earliest scent memory is playing under a lilac bush. I trace my love for scent to many happy hours reading a book under a dwarf wisteria bush> in spring the blooms were so heady it made me swoon! I love and own a beautiful body of deLavande, which is my therapy in a bottle! I would pick Devine because it sounds so beautiful. Square bottle, gold. Thanks for a great draw!

  • I loved her perspective on the use of essential oils and natural scents from plants in American Perfumery. She understands and appreciates what our human biology has us perceive as pleasing when it comes to scents and she makes her fragrances with this in mind.

I would love to try the Vanille ~
    Gourmand Soft Spice: Round, Gold

  • I loved reading about Jane Hendler. I too grew up the youngest of four, and it was in California not too far from where she now lives with her husband. I can relate to her Bohemian style and I love that she has combined her talent in jewelry with her perfume. Her bottles are stunning. And it’s always wonderful to hear about couples creating something together – I think that is very powerful.
I choose Bloom de Nuit in the round gold. If we can choose the necklace, that would be lovely, but, of course, the bottle alone is lovely too!

  • I love that they have incorporated the artists of Carmel with their work, as the arts are so closely intertwined. I would love the Calypso round Boho parfum. It is a gold bottle. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love that bottles are hand made by Czech artisans.
I think that Vanille Gourmand Soft Spice: Round, Gold would just perfect for me 🙂

  • I love her perfumes and enjoyed the interview.

I would love to try NECTAR! Square/Gold.

    Thank you!

  • Thank you for the profile and the draw!
I really liked reading about how Jane Hendler and her husband are involved in the creation process from start to finish, from growing and distilling to designing and sourcing the bottles, in addition to composition:
“my husband Rex Rombach and I shared a dream of creating real plant-derived fragrances. We decided that I would go to school to become a master essential oil therapist and organic perfumer and he would plant an organic farm on our ranch in Carmel Valley, California and study distillation. 4-years later Ajne opened our first boutique and laboratory just off the famed Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea”

I mean, wow! But the part I liked the most was how she found her way to the art after 20 years:
“But not knowing exactly how to pursue this I eventually decided to go back to my design background and became a jewelry designer. It was not until almost 20-years later that I rediscovered my love of perfume and with it, my Bohemian heritage.”
Probably says more about me than her but I found this the most inspiring.

Having a hard time choosing! Adonis, scorpio, Houston, Sublime. Om, Nectar, Calme, and of course Lakshmi..
Not every scent is availible in a dab bottle, so out of the ones that are, I would choose…

Sublime, in denatured spirit base, square silver bottle.

  • Reading about Jane’s grandmother made me miss my 2 grandmothers very much. One grandma was very creative in the home arts; she grew and canned most of the food for her family, sewed curtains and pillows, hooked and braided beautiful and colorful rugs, and always had more creative plans than anyone I knew.

My othere grandma was not that creative, but we always took a blanket out to sit under the lilac bushes to eat lunch, or take naps, or look at the bees in the lilacs.

Thank you for sharing your memories and helping me to think about my grandmothers again.

I would love to win Desire in the round Boho with gold metal

  • I love the idea that “the fragrance of natural plants and essential oils are literally written in our DNA.” I don’t doubt this, and would love to explore the idea more!

I would treasure some Yuzu in a square bottle with gold filigree. Thank you for the article and for the draw.
