ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Daniel Gallagher of Gallagher Fragrances+ National Armed Forces Day Draw

Daniel Gallagher of Gallagher Fragrances, c. 2015

Profile: I was born in Worcester, Massachusetts to a middle-class family of four. My father works as the foreman of a small town’s water department and has been fortunate enough to be employed there for over 30 years. My mother was a stay-at-home mother for about the first eight years of my life, but was employed for several years at a financial institution that was a stone’s throw away from the second of two childhood homes. I also have one older brother, Timothy, who is 2 years and 1 week my senior.

Daniel and his older brother, Timothy, c. 1991

The first of the two childhood homes was a two-story home with a basement. We lived there with my paternal grandfather’s friend, George. He preferred to live in the basement, which was mostly renovated and like a second living space, so my family and I lived in the two top levels of the house. I recall vividly, the smell of the cigars that George used to smoke near-daily.

Daniel in his early years, c. 1993

When I was seven years old, we moved into a ranch-style home less than two miles from my first home. I spent the majority of my early years playing outside (which seems like a thing of the past now) with the local neighbor kids, who are all now in their 30s (as I will be in a few short months). I was also heavily into war memorabilia, focusing mainly on collecting artifacts from WW2. I still have this entire memorabilia tucked away in my closet. You can imagine that most of these items smell like an attic/basement/garage. However, the Colt 45 holster I have, still smells of leather (with hints of attic). A short few years later, in 2001, I joined the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program in high school. I ended up rising to be the top-ranking cadet, with ~160 cadets under my command. A mentor of mine all throughout high school was the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, a retired US Air Force Colonel. He asked me if I wanted to pursue a career in the military and at the time, I didn’t really have anything else in mind (but what 17-year old does?), so I said “definitely.” The Colonel recommended one military college to me: Norwich University.

Daniel, 17, as a freshman at Norwich University in 2005

My life was turned upside down on August 20th, 2005, when I entered the oldest private military college in the United States of America (founded in 1819) at the age of 17. [The next four years of my life were four of the most memorable. In order to earn a commission while attending Norwich University, you had to be a member of the Corps of Cadets. The Corps of Cadets followed US Army regulations, so six days a week, I wore US Army regulation uniforms. Meanwhile, one day a week, I would wear US Air Force uniforms and attend Aerospace Studies classes. Norwich University is located in central Vermont, so I would get to witness the leaves changing and all of the scents that come with a northeastern Fall.

Daniel’s brother Timothy at an undisclosed location in Afghanistan, c. 2006

One event that I will never forget occurred during the first quarter of my sophomore year. The school’s commandant (a Major in the US Army) was standing outside my door, which normally didn’t bode well for anyone. Instead, the Major told me that I had to call my mother as soon as possible. So, I called my mother and she told me that my brother had been wounded in action at an undisclosed location in Afghanistan, but that he was alive and in stable condition, and was being flown back to the now decommissioned Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington D.C. Timothy had been shot just above his heart on July 27th, 2006, and subsequently received the Purple Heart.

Daniel being pinned by his parents as a 2nd Lieutenant US Air Force

On May 9th, 2009, I graduated from Norwich University with a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Computer Security and Information Assurance. The following day, I commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force as a Communications Officer. Present-day, I am serving in the rank of Captain as an Air Force Cyberspace Defense Officer.

Daniel and Mindy on a cruise

A handful of years later, I actually earned a Master of Science degree with a focus on Cyberspace Operations. Several states later, I ended up in Texas, where I met my beautiful girlfriend, Mindy.

Truth be told, Mindy is the impetus for me becoming an artisan perfumer. The story goes… I had been wearing designer fragrances since high school (which seems so long ago, now), most of which were fairly common and inoffensive to the majority of people. Fast-forward a decade to present-day and I found myself at a fork in the road. I was wearing a designer fragrance and my girlfriend returned home from work one day and told me, without missing a beat, that her co-worker wears the same exact fragrance. Needless to say, this fragrance made its way to the back of the shelf.

Daniel's Fragrance collection

At this point, I visited your normal fragrance shops that carry the normal crowd-pleasing designer fragrances, but I couldn’t find any that really interested me. I began to branch out into indie/niche fragrances. After trying out a handful, I realized that these were quality products that had greater longevity, but more to my satisfaction, they were far more unique! But, something still wasn’t sitting quite right. I had a creative itch one day and began researching perfumery and the rest is history, as they say.

Part of the fun for me is trying out all of the ingredients. The second that I get a shipment of new materials, I break out a stack of scent strips and close myself in the “lab” as I like to call it.

Amongst Waves artwork by Lathesh Suryakantha

The impetus for creating new scents comes from any and all inspiration. My most recent release, Amongst Waves, came to be after I had a sudden urge to create something that was a bit more fruity “aquatic” than the pre-existing “aquatic” fragrances in today's market. The name for the creation is derived from the song “Amongst the Waves” by Pearl Jam, one of my favorite bands. Arguably my favorite band of all time is BOSTON; ironic given I grew up ~1 hour away from the city of Boston. Perhaps a future release will be named after being inspired by a BOSTON song.

Just behind my makeshift workspace sits the staging area, which I set up less than two weeks ago. I’m thankful I did, because my new bottles, boxes, and all the other bits and bytes take up a lot of space.

On American Perfumery: I think the one thing to remember is that a lot of artisan/indie perfumers are also avid collectors themselves. My collection is for my own pleasure, sure, but it is also a metaphorical library from which I learn. Clearly, the perfumers behind the fragrances in my collection created something that appealed to me, which led to me purchasing them. My goal is not to recreate something that I already own, but to create something that nobody owns, because it hasn’t been done before. To me, this is what is means to be an American Perfumer; to be a pioneer.

Tom Scholz of Boston

Favorite American Artist: Tom Scholz. American rock musician, songwriter, inventor, engineer, philanthropist, and founder of the rock and roll band BOSTON. If you tune in to any classic rock music station, you can be sure that you’ll hear a BOSTON track eventually. Tom Scholz assembled his own recording studio in the basement of his house because he was unable to achieve the exact sound that he was envisioning in commercial studios. To achieve the exact sound he was going for every time, furthering his creative portfolio, Tom founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc., in order to develop and market guitar amplifiers and effects boxes. To this day, Tom records in his basement studio. This type of ingenuity is something that I try and emulate in the fragrance world. I do my best to create something that is genuinely unique to my knowledge, even if it is not largely popular in the flooded mass market. While books and lectures from successful professionals are undeniably (usually) good references, you will not learn how to invent something truly original unless you learn the hard way through trial and error. Accordingly, you will not learn through trial and error if you give up easily. To me, Tom Scholz emulates this pioneering, persevering spirit.

I also agree with Mr. Gallagher on his assessment of designer fragrance.
Very few have been worthy of purchase for me, but my quest in the indie/niche world has proven to be very
    worthwhile!
Would love to win the sample set so I may know all his work.
    I am in the USA.

  • gregorysop says:

I find it fascinating that he made it from a middle class family into the military and ended up a perfumer. Seems like a very interesting path to that destination. I had a hard time deciding on a fragrance.

I would like to try Amongst Waves for a summer frag.
    From USA

  • Daniel Mayes says:

I love researching fragrances , it’s almost become like an addiction for me but I will be honest I’m the fact I have rarely gone in and found out about the actual perfumer themselves, I found the article really interesting, especially the facts that I didn’t realise Daniel was so heavily involved in the military which I salute anybody for having the courage to do.

I like the fact he has a rather large collection himself and the idea that he doesn’t use the ones he owns as a guide to make his own scents but the fact that he would rather make something unique , it would be far too easy to look to make generic clones nowadays with so many scents on the market .

Writing this on my actual birth date 😉 would be an awesome gift to receive indeed , I believe the two fragrances that interest me most at the moment from the collection are bergamust and also the new amongst waves as I believe it sounds like a scent that could be a major hit in the upcoming summer. If I managed to win however I would love to receive the sample set so I could decide which one exactly to make my first full bottle purchase of 🙂

I live in the United Kingdom, Essex

  • NiceVULady says:

First of all, thank you for your service. What a different path Daniel has had from so many other perfumers. The military isn’t particularly associated with perfume, although certainly associated with various scents. Peaches and Campfires seems very interesting, along with Carpe Cafe. I would like to win the Discovery set however. Thank you for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Wow–brave, smart AND creative! Getting to know indie perfumers like this is such a lovely idea, I have gained respect and admiration for Daniel. May he obtain much success. Thank you for your service! So far, I have sampled only Peaches and Campfires, but it has piqued my interest in the rest of the line. Should I win, I would request the discovery set. His new scent is intriguing in name and notes. I live in the CONUS.

  • I love the inspiration of music that Daniel harnesses and his life experiences that he shares with us. The journey to creation that pulls from the very rich foundation of a person- depending on how they view the world (of course) I think Daniel must be a very outward looking artist and hence avails himself of a vast array of this inspiration. I live in NZ where music is pretty damn good these days! I’d love the sample Discovery set so I could dive into waves and music and beyond….Thanks for a generous draw and review.

  • These are always interesting stories, but this one was different. The love of scent transends.Daniel’s path is not quite as obvious as some we’ve read, but it’s every bit as interesting. Thank you for your service! I would choose the sample set. USA

  • xXxrootxXx says:

Hi thanks daniel for amazing giveaway and cafleurebon for bringing it to us,so what was fascinating you ask ,well I did not know he had a military background and still does, thats amazing,I was also thrown into the wolfs den also but at 18, my parents pushed me into the military ,I spent the next decade of my life in the canadian armed forces.

    I live in Canada
I liked cafleurebon FB page &post for 2nd name in draw 🙂
I think id like bergamust and it definitely would be my choice to win 100ml of it if i won.

  • Thank you for your service! What an important job in cyber security! What an interesting journey you are on! I suppose creating perfume is a great escape from a demanding career. What drive to be accepted into such a historic college at a young age! I would love to win the Carpe Cafe. Thanks for the draw!

  • What a great read. Thank you so much for your service Daniel! I’ve been to Norwich for a retirement, what a cool place.
Love the description of smells you remember.
Thanks for the giveaway, I live in the U.S. I would choose the sample set.

  • fazalcheema says:

Daniel has quite an impressive profile. I knew he is really got at computer but didn’t know he has also served in the military along with his brother. Amazing profile and best of wishes in your new venture. My choice will be Bergamust. I am in the US.

  • Very interesting article. Daniel Gallagher’s path to perfumery is really exciting. From military to the world of perfumes. Very unique and nice. If I would be the lucky winner, my choice is Sine Nomine. I have already liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • What a great story from beginning to end. So nice to see an Armed Forces Day draw also. I think I’d have a few favorites here, the bottle I’d pick should I win would be Amongst Waves (I went to the website to read about it). I do like that sea salt note. USA

  • BlessedTA says:

Nice to read about Daniel background and how he ended up in the Armed Forces.

I will like the sample Discovery set.

Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada.

  • rodelinda says:

I loved reading about Daniel’s journey, which was so different from that of most perfumers. For whatever reason, straight American men don’t usually spend much time thinking about the art of fragrance. I’m very curious to see what he came up with! I’m in the US, and several of his fragrances sound very appealing, but I can’t resist something called Peaches and Campfires 2.0 so that would be my choice. Thank you.

  • I love how his girlfriend told him “so & so wears that…” and he immediately beamed that scent to the rear of hid scent cabinet. I love how he served in the armed forces and breaks that annoying stereotype some people feed into that (most or) all male perfumisti or perfumers are gay! I adore how he strives for uniqueness in his works as well.

    I am a US resident.

After receiving my very own sampler last week from Daniel, I love “Carpe Café”, “Bergamust”, “Peaches & Campfires” and can’t decide if I really like or LOVE “Sine Nomine”.

If I were lucky enough to win this draw my prize would be Carpe Café with its coffee and vanilla top and balsamic rich cypress heart right through to its woody resinous drydown (labdanum, myrrh and amber)!

Thanks to Daniel for the wonderful draw prize and to Cafleurebon for yet another interesting profile in American Perfumery!

  • What I found amazing about Daniel’s perfumery is his way to find the inspiration in rock music! Yes, perfume notes “sounds” as music, but we mostly associate the scents with classic music, not the rock. I like a lot that Daniel wants to be a pioneer in the field. I wish him a lot of luck! As I love warm scents, with woody and balsamic notes, “Carpe Cafe” would be my choice for this draw. Thank you!

  • Being a budding performer who’s an accountant, seeing someone like Daniel, seeking different fragrances from the mass used designers, and that turning into exploring the curiosity of perfuming whilst Pursuing a totally different careeer is a path I’m well on.
I live in Zambia and I would like Carpet Cafe. Fingers crossed

  • The story of his life is interesting for me.
    I am from Armenia.
If I were lucky to win, my prrize would be Amongst Waves.
    Thanks.

  • Great story behind it: a very well educated who is a Captainof Airforce Cyberspace that has become a perfumer because he didn’t want to smell like the average guy, that’s cool.
I have read the description behind his Core Series and I think I’d like the most iloreN from all of them. US

  • doveskylark says:

It’s great to read about someone who is not at all what you expected. I love Pearl Jam and Boston, and all my family is from New England, so this resonated with me. I”d choose the sampler set. I live in the USA.

  • Interesting story and thanks for your service. I agree about same ol designer stuff over and over, enjoy something off the beaten path. I love your quote, ” My goal is not to recreate something that I already own, but to create something that nobody owns, because it hasn’t been done before. To me, this is what is means to be an American Perfumer; to be a pioneer.” Couldn’t agree more. I’m like you, I would not be able to wait when I receive scents. I often think of dabbling in my own world of scents. Who knows. So now your in Texas quite different from Boston. I was just in San Antonio and they have this festival called Fiesta. It is super supportive of their military, national guard, etc. You might check it out sometime. More behind the history of Fiesta but great. Well congrats on your line and continued success. I’m definitely drawn to “That Guy”. Thanks for a super draw. In the USA.

  • GrandmaGaga says:

It is interesting to me that someone with such a no-nonsense career found his way into oerfumery. I have sampled many from his line and as a white floral lover I would like a bottle of Iloren, neroli and lemon verbena sound lovely and it sounds like the most feminine-leaning of his core-series collection. I am in the US.

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

Wow! Daniel is a FB friend but never knew he was in the military. What a transition from the service to the world of perfumery! Tks for your sevice Daniel! Would love to win Bergamust so that I can now purchase Amongst Waves! I am still undecided which to get first so if I win a full bottle here, then it solves my dilemma. San Diego

  • kaitracid says:

He lives two parallel lives, one being an accomplished professional and the other being an artful creative perfumer; I think it’s very contrasting and very interesting. I like he’s trying to original although I couldn’t tell because I haven’t tried anything he created.
I am drawn by iloreN, that is the one I’d like to try the most. USA

  • I was moved that you Daniel were raised by a stay at home mother. I see several favorite possibilites in your creations. I’m excited about this line so if chosen I’d really like to have the Core Series set. 🙂 usa

  • Recently I reviewed the Gallagher perfumes by notes and reading other people`s reviews. I never tried them, but he is right, he is trying to create something new.
So, Daniel keep on working because already made an amazing bridge from army to perfumery.
I think I am going to like THAT GUY if I have a chance.
Thanks to the Gallagher Fragrances for this generosity and CAFleurebon for the opportunity. Live in the US.

  • ÇaFleureBon sure does have a very dedicated following! 🙂 Thank you to everyone for your kind words and for taking the time to read a little bit about me. I rarely bring up my military background in day to day life, let alone when speaking about perfumery. But, I broke out of that shell just for you all 😉 Be sure to follow my Facebook/Instagram for neat behind-the-scenes photos as well as sales and other announcements. Good luck to everyone in the draw!

  • Daniel. Thank you for your service. I think it’s pretty awe inspiring to learn about your path to perfumery. A unique one for certain.
I live in the USA, and if I could chose one to try it would be Bergamust.

  • ntabassum92 says:

Thank you for your service, Daniel. What an interesting story. I loved seeing the pictures of his workspace – how being a perfumer doesn’t require a fancy lab, and can be done just at home if someone has enough drive and desire to do so. Also great to learn about his educational path. I’m in the US. I believe I would love Sine Nomine, so I would choose the full bottle of that one. Happy Memorial Day 🙂

  • In the last few month watching reviews on this new perfumer and to see his wide selection of fragrances performing very well in the Frag Comm… From a guy that wasn’t happy with the selections and quality of the designers genre. And how he decides to create his own… How impressive! I find that the Fragrance of THAT GUY to be the most interesting with the mix of a more mature Aventus with the notes of juniper and pine… That is my pick for sure… THAT GUY… and I do live in the USA… THANK YOU!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Interesting story and somewhat similar to mine up to intermediate education. I like your U-turn into perfumery and now being as a nose creating some wonderful stuff and to drop the perfume bombs to please people. Daniel has a pretty nice collection. In a very short period since creation in 2016, many perfume lovers talking of Gallagher Fragrances.
Thanks to Gallagher Fragrances for the generosity & Cafleurebon for the opportunity. My choice is Bergamust
    Peshawar, Pakistan
