Catamara

PROFILE: I was born in Phoenix Arizona, 8 September 1971. I spent most of my childhood as a girly tomboy, proving I could do anything the neighborhood boys could do and often times better. I liked riding bikes, climbing trees, playing with bugs and skinning knees. I sang in the Phoenix Girls Choir for several years and played the violin and softball for 8 years. My Mother was a schoolteacher and father a lawyer.

I was adopted at 3 days of birth and never found myself to fit in perfectly with my family. They embraced my unusual quirks, love for all things dark and macabre including my desire to dress in all black and gothic lifestyle. They humored me in the beginning but realized at one point this was not a fad I would grow out of. Once this became obvious they learned to accept me truly for who I am and supported my growth, whatever that may be. All the while, I loathed the heat of the desert and sprawl of the expansive strip mall covered city, only truly ever being at peace when it rained or when I was in nature. I was fortunate as a child to travel a lot with my Mother and spent a fair amount of time in nature with my Father. It was at this time he taught me to listen to the wind, though I cannot pinpoint how, I believe this impacted my spiritual growth in years that follow.  When I was 15 years old I awoke one day stating “I’m moving to Seattle when I graduate from college” having never visited prior. I held on to this prophetic message and did so after graduating from the Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education in 1997.

My arrival in the emerald city was life changing. In fact if anyone had told me I would end up doing the majority of the things that followed, I would have laughed maniacally!!

Divination

My journey here began with an overwhelming and unexpected outward expression of creativity that included things that deeply challenged me as well as my fear of being seen in the public eye!  Over the span of nearly two decades I found myself fire dancing, performing in a professional tribal belly dance troupe, and becoming an internationally known dj and promoter at Goth/Industrial/Electronic dance clubs in both the USA and Canada.

The Rosarium

Also weaving threads amongst this spiral of creativity was a profound immersion of various occult and esoteric herbal studies and praxis, resulting in ritual art and my passion for making herbal concoctions. Inevitably I also became deeply obsessed with the ancient arts and sciences of alchemy and esoteric herbal arts and became a master herbalist and master in the wortcunning tradition of incense. This great tapestry also led me to the birthing and success of my business Rosarium Blends, now seven years old.

Aromatic Tools of a Witch

ON AMERICAN PERFUMERY: My path upon the art of perfuming differs greatly from that of popular perfumery. All of my formulas are magical charms and are talismanic. They have been created with very specific intentions and formulated using magical theory, correspondences and astrological and lunar timing specific to the energy they embody. They will work on a subtle level even if worn without intention.

Every plant has specific energies that can be worked with magically.  My formulas are first determined by researching all plants I want to include in the charm. I then consider the planetary influences, any folklore and mythology and how they specifically related (in varying ways) to the formula I wish to create.  I do not simply mix scents together because they smell nice together or work in accordance of the perfume organ. I focus first on the energy I want to alchemicalize by combining what I know of each ingredient with the other. The process of knowing how much of each herb or oil I select to blend thereafter is an intuitive process and based upon a myriad of other esoteric correspondences.

Manifestation

I was the first to coin the term Talismanic Perfume, while discussing the subject with my partner, who started his own line of talismanic perfumes. Since then the word has gone viral and the concept of perfumes made as talismans seems to have spread. It feels good to have inspired others to integrate or at the very least see the magic available to us through perfumes and scent.

The beautiful thing about scent is that it is linked to our brain and connects to our memory.  It is deeply connected to our emotional state and has an impact on our behavior whether we realize it or not. Once we have made a connection with it, scent can instantaneously transport us to times past and give us a feeling of comfort, arousal, love, hate, rage, etc.  Scent can have positive effects on our mood, reduce stress, trigger arousal, and increase self-confidence and much more.  This is truly amazing and I believe that any scent whether hand crafted by a witch or artisan perfumer, or mass-produced in the corporate world, has the ability to effect people and trigger emotion or feelings within. Though when made with specific ability and knowledge in the ways previously mentioned will have a much deeper and greater impact to the recipient who wears my perfumes, especially when worn with intention.

Sacred Heart, by Benjamin Veirling

FAVORITE AMERICAN ARTIST: Benjamin A. Vierling is among one of the most important contemporary artists in todays esoteric art field. His herbal compositions are awe-inspiring and invoke great knowledge for those who listen. Each a masterpiece in their own right, he orchestrates rich botanical imagery and reveals the occult mysteries of the plants and the spirits that inhabits them. Truly a master at capturing the very essence needed to convey these relationships to the open eye and transmission of this knowledge.  His paintings and illustrations inspire my work by giving me a tapestry of imagery to get lost within the coils and caverns of each dimension and layer of information I both study and weave and craft into each of my talismanic charms of incense, oils and perfumes.

I love Catamara’s honest and emotional story about her childhood experiences which made her who she is now. I am curious about her fragrances, especially Cthtonic which I would love to win. I live in the EU and I like the fb page. Thank you for the draw.

  • I find the whole aspect of designing perfumes as talismans with intended effects upon people fascinating. I mean, all who love perfume know how it affects our moods and the effect certain scents have on our significant others but the thought of it being a deliberate formula with somewhat predictable outcomes is very appealing. I would love the opportunity to try HermAphrodite. Coincidentally, I live in Phoenix, Az in the US.

  • Catamara comes across as very independent-minded and in a way, her life story is quite intriguing. She is fortunate to have a family that accepted her quirky nature. Going to ASU and then deciding to move to Seattle without every visiting it… Catamara is certainly adventurous. I will leave it to Catamara to choose the one most appropriate for me. I am a guy who doesn’t mind daring and unique fragrances. I am in the US.

  • I find it fascinating that Catamara’s love for nature was the seed for making perfumes. I can totally relate to that. Love the unusual green tattoo by the way. I would definitely go for Rosarium if I should win. I’m an absolute sucker for rose perfumes and this one sounds delicious. Thanks for this awesome draw. I live in EU.

If I would be as lucky to win, my choice is The Rosarium, this fragrance sounds just like a scent that could be my signature perfume. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.
And of course I have already liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery.

  • I love that Catamara had a creative rebirth in the Emerald City. I also like that she likes the rain and that her dad taught her to listen to the wind. I alm very intrigued by perfume as talisman.
I would love to try Satyr.
    I live in the USA.

  • How interesting that you knew Seattle would be the right place for you without ever having been there. Such a contrast to sunny Arizona! It sounds like you’ve had a fascinating life. So many eclectic creative interests! That you got into perfumery makes perfect sense. Natural perfumes really can touch the soul. I live in Canada and would love to win Chthonic. Thank you!

  • I have to say I found the childhood remember emcee very moving. I have a strong affinity with adoption. My daughter I adopted at 2 months and at the exact same time a half brother appeared who had been adopted at birth and I never knew. I was elated to discover him while discovering the Baby, my daughter. I loved the nature journey with her father and travels with her mother. Thanks for the intimate sharing of those journeys. I’d love 4 samples. Satyr and Clotonic and Rosarium and Manifestation . I live in NZ . Great review, generous draw and many thanks.

    Peshawar, Pakistan

  • This journey to pefumery is mind blowing. So much dept and care are put in the making process of the scents. I like the fact that they were designed for a purpose more than just smelling nice. If it were true and these talismans were actually enhancing one’s aspect it would be great! If I were lucky enough to win one offering, I would chose Pirowica. It sounds very sensual and its composition stands out to me amongst the others. Sweet and sensual is my thing. Liked the cafleurebon’s profile in american perfumery as well.
    I live in Europe.

    Sincerly, Sven

  • What an interesting background Catamara has. I’m intrigued by the idea of magical and talismatic properties in her fragrances. I would be interested in the four samples should I be fortunate enough to win. I’m in the USA.

  • What I like most about Catamara is her using of magical formulas and theories in perfume making, it is really unusual and very interesting. I would choose Manifestation. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • It is great that Catamara understands the emotional context of fragrances. I fully agree with her words: “The beautiful thing about scent is that it is linked to our brain and connects to our memory. It is deeply connected to our emotional state and has an impact on our behavior whether we realize it or not.” I think all of her perfumes sound fascinating, but the one that I think would be most to my liking is Chthonic, I live in the EU.

  • Fantastic article. I’ve been a fan of Rosarium Blends since stumbling upon her work at the EBC and am fascinated with Catamara’s evolution and talents. I’ve also liked the cafleurebon FB page and would be thrilled to win a bottle of Pirowica, which i deeply resonate with.

  • I love how Catamara intentionally weaves magic into her creations. I can only imagine how wonderful it was to have her father teach her to listen to the wind. I would love to have the Van Van!

  • Catamara’s background is very interesting and passionate. I have to fully agree that scents have a strong connection to our emotions and evoke strong and vivid memories. I hope this perfumer’s journey continues for a long time! I have also visited the mentioned fb page. Thanks for the opportunity as I would love to try Pirowica. I am located in Europe

  • Suzanne Barroso says:

Thank you for sending me to Catamara’s story. I am new to her perfumes as well as to Marcus, and find them both to be magnetic as well as poetic. I now realize why. We all have paths we grow up and through, and Catamara’s path has allowed her the companionship of a love as well as the alchemy of knowing, intertwining her thoughts as they where learned through the various pahses of study, which has evolved into her expressions of scents for us all to be privy to, so we may adorn and protect ourselves with, while we are creating our own swirling journey. I would have to say under this guidance of this super moon tonight that if I am the winner I would choose the samples so I can experience the N,S,E + W or Winter ,spring, summer fall influences they evoke with their suttle differences they have over heart, mind, and spirit. Rosarium, Dom, Pirowica, Hermaphrodite ,Aqua de Flora, manifestation,Aqua de Palo Santo. I live in Miami Fl USA

  • What a fascinating story. It’s awesome how Catamara managed to transform so difficult experiences, like being an adopted child, into strength and personal energy. The descriptions of her perfumes sound fantastic. Thank you for this fascinating draw. My choice would be Agua de Flora. EU.

  • Wayne Hollander says:

Completely enthralled. Never occurred to me to seek spiritual guidance through scent. I was most touched by this:

“They humored me in the beginning but realized at one point this was not a fad I would grow out of. Once this became obvious they learned to accept me truly for who I am and supported my growth, whatever that may be. ”

Of course….not all of us have parents who love and support us if we stray from the expected.

I live in NYC, NY and would choose Dom, HermAphrodite, Pirowica, and Van Van.

I am just past a year visiting the blog and I am so grateful to be exposed to perfumes and perfumers I would never otherwise know about <3

  • Her personal strength to follow her dreams is such an inspiration. Loved reading the background story to a company I believe in. Thank you!
I’d pick The Rosarium and am from Seattle, WA. USA!!

  • Catamara is inspiring in her approach to creating her blends. Doing the research on the plants, to understand their nuances, not just their notes, but their energetics, spirit, their voice, their history. I love this approach to bringing the plants together to create an aromatic talisman that allows the wearer to have intention with the aroma and also a deeper connection.
I live in Portland Oregon. The choices…I would love a talisman scent that I can use to help me go deeper into my shadow work.
I am thinking Chthonic, Dom or HermAphrodite.

  • Talismanic perfume concept is fascinating and I enjoyed Catamara recounting of her fascinating story. I enjoy all natural perfumes as well
I live in Canada and would love to win manifestation

  • I have been following Rosarium and House of Orpheus for a couple of years now and I am very fascinated and pleased that they have chosen this path of creating scent which goes far beyond the normal use of perfume. I come from a circle where we use incense, plants and blends of essential oils for specific talismanic and ritual purposes. Catamara has done so much research into all aspects of this I value her experience and her wisdom and I have very deep respect for her art and trust her intuition. I would love PIROWICA. I am in Portland OR.

  • What an interesting read this was. I don’t know much about the house but it sounds incredible! Catamara has done a wonderful job. I’m in Canada and thanks so much for the draw

  • Michael Thomas says:

Great article. I have two of their perfumes and love them. They are powerful and subtle at the same time. Not in the least assaulting on the senses and evoke strong senses for whatever occasion. Highly recommended as well as their Viridis Genii Symposium.
    Congratulations!!

  • I love Catamara’s story and her perfumes too! Manifestation, Dom and the Rosarium are probably my favorites but they are all wonderful. The longevity and power of her perfumes are amazing and I believe they all work as the perfumer and the wearer intend.
