PROFILE: I spent my childhood in California and my year was divided between homes in the city, beach, mountains and desert. As a result, life felt like a constant adventure full of art and nature. I would spend countless hours observing and simply archiving the shapes, color and smells in my world.

Scent has always been a powerful fascination / inspiration. I would desperately try to identify each and every “formula” in the passing breeze and I diligently recorded my notes… Pacific Ocean air + driftwood + Night Jasmine, Mendocino Redwood + Winter rain + wet wool, Arpege + cigarettes + Scotch (Mother’s goodnight kiss).  It is only recently that I have come to recognize their extraordinary power as catalysts of experience. 

Encouraged by my family to be creative and curious, think critically and articulate my ideas, I studied Sculpture, Photography and, finally, Architecture at RISD. After school, I settled in NYC and found myself working at Baron&Baron, Fabien Baron’s creative agency. The agency’s extraordinary team and process taught me that pure, conceptually driven, ideas can be taken off the pedestal and made accessible though fashion and beauty as in the Viktor&Rolf’s Flowerbomb project.

My husband and collaborator, Charlie Stackhouse, and I founded Cinnamon Projects, a multi-disciplinary studio, in order to focus on client collaboration and our personal work, as artists, in equal measure.

Our first fragrance project, Series 01, is the unexpected result of a conceptual exploration of the relationship between creative inspiration and time. To explain… Series 01 is the name of an inspiration archive that we assembled over a year’s time. Suspecting a lesson would emerge; we simply cataloged images without an intention or end use in mind.  As a result, the assemblage is incredibly free, eclectic and emotionally driven. When the collecting was finished, we began a sort of decoding. We sorted the archive by time, looked for clues about what resonates for us and learned that each hour of the day has a unique character and the connecting thread is memory.

We turned to fragrance as a medium because of its power to provoke memory and, therefore, one’s inspiration and perception of time. With a bit of trial and error, we blended the Series 01 formulas over the following year as an attempt to distill and translate inspiration into an ephemeral, sensorial and sharable format that is emotionally transportive and provokes deeper experience. In the end, we arrived at a total of ten scents, each based on a single hour in the day. The Accords, our perfume oils, reflect the hours full of the emotional, sensual and portraiture. The Incense formulas reflect the hours full of the abstract, graphic and environmental.

In our story Incense is the stage, Accords are the players.

FAVORITE AMERICAN ARTISTS: We both are drawn to art that is experiential and engaging in a way that allows for a sense of discovery and elevation. I am transfixed and inspired by James Turrell’s Skyspaces. Charlie loves Jenny Holzer’s Projection works for their juxtaposition and messaging.

 Editor’s Note: I first learned of Andrew and Charlie on Instagram @cinnamonprojects, and it was their striking graphics and images, often  black and white photos that drew me there first; the fact that they create scent is a bonus.  I am thrilled that they are now our 97th and 98th  American Perfumers in this series.-MC

    It certainly is an original idea, a set of five accords for different hours of the day. As for their design aesthetic, I noticed the CP logo on the box. I would like to win 8ml of the 10AM accord. My favorite hour of the day is 10PM. USA

    Love the idea of keeping a “bank” of images and pieces of inspiration and stitching them together (if I’m understanding correctly) into a collection of olfactory art. Kind of reminds me of how I write sometimes! I also loved the acknowledgement that growing up in CA is this sensory paradise of all kinds of smells from the most man-made to the most divine and varied natural smells. I’m in the US and would love to win 8ml of 11pm…thought my favorite time of the day is 7am (if it’s before anyone is up in the house)

    I am very intrigued by the way Andrew’s whole life seems consumed with artistic pursuits. He is quite young; who knows what else he will achieve! I think all the accords sound interesting, it’s a hard choice. Struggling between 6 pm and 11pm but I think the benzoin wins, so 6 pm.

    I found Andrew and Charlie’s very organic approach to creativity inspiring – that they collected things of meaning and gave themselves time to connect the dots, that they were flexible in their approach and treated it as an open ended project. It is a privilege to be able to do that, but also also a privilege for us to be allowed to be a part of it.

    My favourite times of the day are the times of the long shadows, so beautiful. I’d love to try their incense. I’m in Australia.

    I love their interactions with each other 🙂 And also those gorgeous pictures. I find the idea of different scents for different hours wonderfully innovative! The codification of a vague idea of propriety of perfumes I think we all have.

    All of them sound fabulous. I’ve got a preference for the accords. I think the 6PM sounds the most exciting, though 10AM sounds so wonderful, too. But then I’d be leaving out the 2PM–oh, this is so difficult; they all sound and look fabulous. I’m in the EU!

    I like their story, I really like the clean and minimalist design and would be most interested in 10AM. But the 2PM and 8AM seem appealing also. My favorite hour is 9AM. I live in the US.

    Andrew and Charlie’s perfumery intrigues me because they use the element of time to evoke certain experiences or memories. Their brand aesthetic is very sensual and classy, which actually goes very well with their product’s concept.

    I’d love to win 6pm and I’m in Canada. Naturally, my favourite our of the day is blue hour, just as the sun has set but the sky is still glowing… these days it’s around 8pm for me.

    The relationship between time and fragrance as well as the amazing creativity of Andrew and Charlie is what strikes me. I checked them out on Instagram and can understand Cafleurebon connection
    My favorite hour is 10AM but I would love to win 8pm sounds like a chypre
    This was such a well written profile and it really gave a lot of insight
    I also saw that Andrew worked on Flowerbomb ad campaign

    I’d love to have all of them and put them on as directed. Very novel perfume concept. Nice clean looking vials. I don’t really have one favorite hour, it changes. 11pm of the series01 accord is my pick for the clove/carnation. 🙂 U.S.

    I loved the creative idea behind these perfumes based on the notion “to have a perfume for every hour”. These perfumes must smell really wonderful based on their notes.
    Also I find the aesthetics of this couple minimal yet very luxurious and elegant.
    I would love to try the 8AM. My favorite hour of the day is 8PM.

    What an incredible and original concept?? I loved this profile and the photos that accompanied it. A different fragrance for each hour of the day is a genius concept! The accords sound amazing and I choose 11PM. My favorite time of day is 4 PM. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

    Andrew had interesting childhood; being able to enjoy city, beach, and mountain life at the same time. He is lucky he was able to start his business with his love and husband Charlie. Andrew have had academic and work experiences in the field of art which has prepared him well for creative projects. My choice for this draw will be 10AM : Cedar / Iris / Lavender / Sage / Vetiver . I am in the US.

    Associating fragrance with time makes perfect sense, because it’s constantly changing over time and is ephemeral in that it’s only with you for a few short hours. The positive side of this is that you can change your fragrance several times a day to suit your mood, which is exactly what their line suggests.

    I agree their aesthetic is amazing. Their packaging is so sleek and sophisticated. I love it!

    My favourite time of day is the magic hour at dusk, so the time shifts through the year. There is something so magical about the change in light at that time and I love that its time moves with the seasons.

    I have been reading quite about about these guys lately. I was immediately drawn to the creativity and idea of the hours of the day. I agree they each deserve a scent to evoke this. There are many times my morning scent versus afternoon to Eve are usually different in my mind. I love how it was a break down just smelling something on a breeze and picking the scent apart. I do this too and sometimes it drives me a tad crazy. Ha ha. I’m excited to try this line and see what time of day strikes me. Usually the evening hours starting about 6:00 pm for me if my favorite. I would choose choose the 8ml of 6:00pm as well. Though 11:00 pm looks so spicy. Ugh. In the USA. Thank you.

    I like the link between fragrance and time that Andrew and Charlie drew out. I would love to win the incense. I love Japanese style incense, and I am very, very curious about how this incense would compare to the bargain Japanese brands I typically stock up on. My favorite hour of the day depends on whether it’s a workday or not! Though, usually I am a night/evening person… 7:00 pm sounds right. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

    Of course each hour of the day has its own character, its own rhythm. I think that’s the architect speaking. 10AM accord sounds very nice. I’m in the US and my favorite hour is 5AM or false dawn whichever come first.
