CaFleureBon EXCLUSIVE: Joël Palix, President of Clarins Fragrance Group & The Debut Of ANGEL Room Service + Membership Has Its Privileges Draw

The first ad for Thierry Mugler Angel Perfume featured Estelle Lefebure (1994)

Angel Perfume was created for fashion designer Thierry Mugler in 1992 and is one of the most polarizing, most memorable, and most influential fragrances of the past twenty years. Signed by Master Perfumer Olivier Cresp, Angel is one of the twelve pivotal fragrances that Chandler Burr, the Curator for The Art of Scent, 1889-2012, at MAD in New York City included in the first museum exhibition dedicated to exploring the design and aesthetics of olfactory art.

Initally, Angel perfume was not the block buster best seller it is today. In an olfactive landscape of more classic fare, consumers needed some time to embrace a scent that at first sniff smelled more like a dessert than a traditional perfume. Clarins Fragrance Group, the parent company of the Mugler fragrances stood by the dramatically different gourmand scent and throughout the years has built a brand that is worn by millions.

Joël Palix, President of Clarins Fragrance Group Worldwide is in New York City for the launch of a bold new initiative, the first of its kind in fragrance. Instead of a mix of brands you have never tried, Angel Room Service offers "All Things Angel" –lotions, potions, ancillary products and limited editions – both full size and sample size- delivered to your home and  includes a personal concierge you can call anytime.

Joël Palix,  President of Clarins Fragrance Group and the Thierry Mugler brand

M. Palix took time out from his busy schedule to answer a few of my questions :

Thank you M.Palix.  Please explain benefits of becoming a member of ANGEL Room Service (click here)

JP: Thierry Mugler has always believed that his success and his future should be built hand in hand with his customers… For its 20th anniversary, the brand pays them tribute by offering them an innovative service, unique in the fragrance universe. A new way for the brand to relate to its consumers, always offering the best possible service and breaking away from the perfumery trends of the moment. The ANGEL Room Service platform is a US-only digital offer for Angel aficionados. Expanded with the generosity characteristic to the Thierry Mugler brand, It is an innovative subscription program, characterized by generosity and high standards, allowing you to enjoy a year full of ANGEL delights, samples, exclusive treats, complimentary shipping, as well as access to your personal Concierge. Moreover, with the Angel Room Service, the customer benefit from real price advantages, saving about 20 % (from the original products).

Will exclusive products be created for members?

JP: Not for the moment, it is all about highlighting the existing Angel fragrances and products that so many people already love, in an innovative way. Angel lovers know that Thierry Mugler has always been recognized for thinking outside the box – only this time we are fitting the Mugler vision in…three boxes a year!

I remember the lovely beauty products that were created under the Thierry Mugler brand. Any plans to create a line of Angel branded cosmetics?

JP:  You will not find Thierry Mugler Beauty in store anymore. However, some boxes may include some Thierry Mugler beauty products, but it's a surprise…

What is the benefit of a subscription (just how much Angel perfume can someone really wear in a year)?

JP: Angel perfume lovers are very loyal to their fragrance and do not stop at just buying their favorite fragrance – many also love to stock up on the body care line and all the other Angel products available – the Room Service program is a one-of-a-kind program offering both an incredible experience delivered to your home and substantial savings over the course of the year.

  • Okay, I secretly LOVE Angel! And I have since it came out, BUT I know others HATE it, so I’ve tried to wear it surreptitiously. Like that plan really works (yeah, I pretend it does)! I would love to win. Thank you for your great interviews and wonderful draws!

  • My first experience with Angel perfume was 10 years ago when my sister bought me the beautiful blue star shaped bottle as a gift
I heard so many things about it being too loud, too much patchouli , too candy floss . Funny on me it isn’t too sweet and has soft sillage
I love the Angel Edt as well
This seems like a birch box kind of thing and I think it’s a great idea
    I would love to win
An idea would be to offer members advance samples of the new variations and ask us in a private chat room what we think
Actually a chat room for us angel fanatics would be fun

  • Funny my first wife wore Angel and had every lotion, body cream and I remember Angel Violet was her favorite
The new lady in my life wears Angel and Angel taste of leather
I would love to win this and use it to gift her every month
Actually I wear her Taste of Leather more than she does
Us guys need an Angel cologne with a macho name so we aren’t embarrassed when folks ask us what we are wearing
I know women love jewelry so why not do an Angel locket using Swarovski crystal with a solid inside

  • I got an Angel sample as swag in 1997 or 1998. I assumed it was going to be an aquatic at the time – blue, right? I remember swabbing it on and being totally horrified. I wasn’t ready. I was in high school! Now I get it.

I think it would be great if the box included some of Angel’s lovely flankers. I adore the latest Parfums de Cuir versions of Angel and Alien. I also have the Angel garden of stars collection sitting in my to-try bin. And hey, my true Mugler love is Alien – why not throw some of that in for good measure? I love the extra energy Mugler and Clarins put into the Angel brand.

  • Angel is absolutely a BiG perfume and was a benchmark for the whole gourmand category

I definitely believe it belongs in Mr Burr’s exhibit
I am not a fan…but my mom is and she buys tons of the stuff so winning the subscription would make a great stocking stuffer
Very impressive the president of the company took time to answer your questions
They seem like a great company

  • My first experience with angel was on my honeymoon cruise It was love at first sniff when I sprayed it on at the fragrance counter. I wore every night and have fond memories of it wafting through the air and setting the mood . I think that advance samples of the flankers would be awesome. Thanks again for a great interview and a wonderful draw.

  • Farawayspices says:

My first experience with Angel was at the perfume counter, where I was eager to try this new perfume with such an interesting combination of gourmand notes with patchouli and berry. It was quite a moment, the first time I had smelled such a combination! I enjoyed the cool, confectionary effect with the ever so slightly dirty underpinnings. I do notice this is an addictive, signature fragrance for many women…which may result in very liberal application (since the nose becomes accustomed after awhile and may need “more” to get the satisfaction…). A subscription service is a brilliant idea for these women. Perhaps they should offer a small bottle of the flankers Angel offers as well.

  • It took about ten years for me to come around to appreciating Angel. I would try it every time I visited a department store and couldn’t decide if I loved or hated it, but that almost narcotic feel finally won me over. I too would like to see more of Angel’s flankers included in the subscription; I really like Aqua Chic and Taste of Leather, and there are many others like the Garden series that I haven’t really explored yet. Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!

  • I love Angel when it is worn with restraint. I really like Angel for men and really am anxious to try the new leather series when I get a chance to sniff. Thanks for the draw!

  • I came to like Angel via one of it’s flankers, the rose one. I still like that one. I think they do a good job with flankers. I’m loving my Womanity Taste of ?, a flanker from last year. I would love to see more bath powder. It is so hard to find a nice bath powder in scents I love. Angel does a great cream. If the perfume is too much, you might just try wearing the cream. It has sillage!

  • This is wonderful, thank you for the chance! My experience with Angel is very recent. I initially tried Alien and really loved it. It lasted a long time on my skin, had great sillage, and a pretty interesting scent. I gave in and purchased it, and after a while got curious about Angel, which I hadn’t even tested. I got a sample of Angel, and did enjoy it, although I haven’t gotten around to getting a bottle at this point. I think this is an interesting service and can’t yet think of anything more they could add.

  • My first experience with Angel was not that long ago. I am still new to the world of fragrance, but remember desperately trying to find Angel to test. At the time only very small independent boutique had it. Among Angel, I also tested Alien. Both were love at first sniff. Thankfully TM/DFG has expanded contracts and now all our local department stores carry TM. Lately, I have actually been leaning more towards Angel, so I ended up buying a 100ml bottle for backup. As of right now I have over 10 bottles of various TM fragrances (6 being various versions of Angel) and counting as my love for TM stays consistent. I believe TM is very innovative fragrance house, one of very few mainstream houses today that manage to have that powerhouse quality. TM is what fragrance should be and that being very reason why they are still going strong so many years later.

I only hope that Angel stays around for many years to come, as I am younger and would be devastated if anything was to happen to the brand. As for the version of Angel I like the most- The original is pretty groundbreaking, on me I get a smokey quality to it, which makes it that much better. My favorite version of Angel is the Angel Liqueur de Parfum, Oh my goodness! I could swim in it… I can’t get enough of it… I even been layering it with my Bvlgari Black. Angel Liqueur is so deep and rich chocolate, the dry down is heaven & last forever on my skin! I wish it would not ever be discontinued.

Changes to the Angel Room Service (even the Mugler Circle)- I would like to receive not only mens scents, but also female. It seems like all the women always get “the good stuff”. I mostly own and have interest in TM marketed towards women. Many men also wear female scents… Maybe they could put an additional option in where one can choose the gender products he or she is interested in. It would boost sales and we all know people who buy fragrances buy for their significant other.

Another great and innovative thing I would like to see from house of TM would be a line of unisex fragrances. TM, with their gift of being one of the most influential mainstream houses at the moment, they could very well get the unisex thing going. This would make the industry more competitive and even out things a little bit more, so other houses are not as big competition to TM. But regardless of what TM does, what was once the biggest house (Chanel) is on a rapid downward spiral. The world of fragrance is changing and I have nothing but respect for TM/CFG for continuing on the fight to keep quality alive!

  • I always wear Angel. I Love Love Love it. I’ve been wearing it since its inception. My Boys (1 have 5 of them) always get excited when I get low because they know it’s a sure fire gift that I will love. Almost daily someone says, “You smell great, what are you wearing?” And I always say, “it’s just my little Angel.” Not only do I smell good, I feel protected when I wear it. Thanks for creating it. It is definitely a one of a kind!

  • First time sampling Angel was when trying to find a fragrance that my wife would wear. She’s not into fragrances as much as me but I recently purchased a limited edition Angel for her and she’s been wearing it lately.

I’d like to see a Men’s version of Angel Room and also a new fragrance for men from Mugler besides another Pure edition

  • Judy Mercado says:

I discovered Angel in ’94-’95. I was first drawn to the bottle. I have always loved stars and I have a small collection of perfume bottles. The bottle is so beautiful by itself! Then of course, once I smell it, I was in love! It has such a unique blend of scents that is just heavenly. After I discovered Angel, my Mother and my sister started wear it also. My hairstylist and manicurist also started wearing it after I had wore it to the salon. I’ve had many people stop me just to ask what scent I have on. I love the idea of the refillable decanter! I would love to have a complete set of all the different decanters and bottles! They are so beautiful! For my birthday, I’m buying myself the Stardust power! Can’t wait to get it! Even after all these years, Angel is my favorite! I do love all of the fragrances by Thierry Mugler! I have a suggestion! How about a spicy scent with a name like “Dark Angel”? It could come in a bottle that’s dark blue/violet. I think it could be awesome! Think about it…

  • I confess to having overapplied Angel on my first try of this ueber-powerful perfume and never fully recovered.

However, I have come to love many of the children of Angel, including the Jardin d’Etoiles series, of which I own Violette, Rose, and Lys (I dislike peony, so I skipped that one)…

I recently noticed that Elie Saab is very similar to what an orange blossom Angel might smell like. How about expanding that series to include a few more flowers: iris, magnolia, tagetes…the list goes on and on!

  • One evening out with the girls I kept smelling this “fragrance”. I couldnt quit sniffing. The whole evening. It was really getting to me and I just had to know. The friend that was wearing it did not want to reveal to me what it was. She was a lovely person but was a “one of a kind ‘ type of person. She totally did not do what others did and now I was on a mission. I had to know.. So the entire evening I did everything I could to get the fragrance name from her. Finally she gave in but made me swear not to tell any of our close friends that it was ANGEL.

There was only one store in town that carried it and I hit that place the very next day. and I have worn Angel ever since. That was in 1992. I cannot believe how many free samples I have given to people because they stop me on the street and inquire. I kept my promise but I wouldn’t hesitate to help a stranger on the street. I can’t think of wearing anything else at this time. I have tried some of the other TM fragrances but always go back to the yummy Angel.

I love the refill option at the one and only store in town. Can’t believe I’m almost out now but it won’t take me long to get a fill-up and hopefully a sample to pay forward.

Thanks for the opportunity to share and I would sooooo like to win this membership. What a great idea!!

    Sandy

  • Wow! What a wonderful offer! I brought a sample spray of Angel with me when I went to Paris for the first time – in 1993. I fell MADLY in love with it. It was nothing like anything else I’d ever worn or smelled. It became a holy grail scent for me…and it still is. An irony, too – it became a very popular fragrance in Paris! Love that it has that association for me.

  • I adore Angel! I wore her exclusively for years … and then I sort of fell into the fragrance rabbit hole, but I’ve never stopped loving Angel, even if I don’t wear her every day. If I had to only have one fragrance for the rest of my life, I could easily and without hesitation, say Angel. The version I wear most frequently is the EDP … and I love the body powder and body oil so much!

  • My fave version is Aqua Chic. My first encounter with Angel was when I figured out it was what my old boss wore.

  • Angel by day, yoga and karate instructor by night. I have worn only Angel since my first whiff in a department store years ago. My passions are life-long, and Angel is one of them. Thank you for creating a fragrance that is part of me, not just something I put on~~

  • I came to Angel fairly recently (where have I been?) and was immediately in love with it. It seems, though, that I love the flankers even more, since I still don’t have a bottle of just plain ole’ Angel edp.

My favorite may be the Liqueur, but I also enjoy the Sunessences. It would be fun to try more of the body products, for sure.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I have never tried Angel, but I have 2 friends that I see frequently, and Love it on them . It is their signature fragrance. I would consider making it my signature if it smelled that good on me. Thanks for the draw, and the interesting interview. Very innovative idea.

  • My favorite is the Liqueur, but I’m also interested in the Le Gout du Parfum and the new leather version. I’d love to have a chance to play with the other products in this line! Thanks for the interview and the draw.
