ÇaFleureBon Creative Directors in Perfumery: Pierre Aulas of Ego Facto Perfumes + Grand Prix du Parfum Draw

pierre Aulas perfumer

Pierre Aulas  Founder of Ego Facto Perfumes

Opéra or Perfume ? This was the dilemma of my youth. I am a classical singer for years. I sang in the Paris Orchestra choir for 6 years. Wonderful experience of being conducted by the best maestros (Giulini, Ozawa, Sawallisch, Davis …) and singing with the best soloists all over the world. During the same period I was entering the perfume industry and had a crucial choice when I was 29 years old, which path to choose.? Singer or perfumer? I decided to  pursue perfume because you can continue to sing as a perfumer but you cannot continue to create fragrances as a singer!

Pierre Aulas Carmen

Pierre Aulas is a Tenor,  Opera singer and a perfumer (Here in a performance of Carmen)

At the moment I still sing as a tenor amateur in different choirs. I even performed Carmen on stage  a few weeks ago in the Bordeaux Theater! For me there is real link between music and perfumes; we use a lot of similar words-notes, accords, both are telling a magical story and the final aim is to touch the emotion of people around you. With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.

I discovered the perfume industry almost by chance. I was not from Grasse, my father was not a nose… nothing predestined me for this career. At 26, I took on a job in marketing development for a large retailer’s cosmetic products, and became familiar with fragrance composition companies and perfumers as I asked them to work on my product lines. My natural gift for working with scents was noticed by Grasse-based Company Mane, who hired and trained me. My abilities in both marketing and fragrance quickly positioned me as the perfect middleman between brands and “noses”. The next job offer for me was by Swiss giant Firmenich, as Key Account manager in fine fragrance.  I accepted, but on the condition that I work on Thierry Mugler perfumes, a brand I found exciting, creative and daring in terms of fragrances. This new turning point in my life gave me the opportunity to meet Vera Strubi, former Thierry Mugler Parfums president, whose boldness and insight never cease to amaze me.  She is the person I respect the most in this industry. She is my blue Fairy, my blue Angel .

Pierre Aulas:  Mugler Cologne, Angel and Alien

For ten years, we worked together and brought a number of projects to fruition. Our great complicity, based on genuine respect and a  similar sense of smell, resulted most notably in the creation of Mugler Cologne, Alien, Angel les Jardins d’Etoile, La part des Anges, the A* men saga… It was also Vera Strubi who encouraged me to depart from the path I had begun.

In 2001, I founded Art of Nose Consulting, my own olfactory development consultancy. My first client, naturally, was Vera. Then came other brands, and I started working as an olfactory artistic director for other very challenging brands:  Chloe (Chloé, Love, Eau de Chloé), Azzaro (Chrome United, Azzaro pour Homme Night Time), Roberto Cavalli, Swarovski, Paradiso, Just Cavalli), Balenciaga ( Balenciaga Paris, Balenciaga essence, Flora Botanica, Rosa Botanica,  B Balenciaga and recently Shiseido (Ever Bloom) and  Miu-Miu.

Ego Facto’s birth

Along with my work as an olfactory consultant, in 2010, I decided to launch my own perfume brand and I am fortunate as the Creative Director of Ego Facto, to have the support from my fans and friends in the world of perfumery. I decided to champion original juices with a lot of character. I was eager to achieve, more than just to create my own brand and the visual world around it, and to allow anyone to identify with a fragrance that was truly their own. One brand, seven fragrances, seven personalities, an ode to self-assertion, a true statement of Ego. I even developed a proprietary quiz that you can take online and discover facets of your self.

Artistic Creative Direction

For Ego Facto I am the Creative Director and am very fortunate as I built some very strong relationships with master perfumers over the years.  I want the best from them and it is collaborative as I am convinced that creating a perfume is like creating a baby together. It needs love from both parents

For instance, for the creation of PooPoopidoo, I decided to work with Dominique Ropion.

I “olfactively” met Dominique when we created together Alien for Thierry Mugler. We made so many trials during more than two years that I can say I really know Dominique very well. He is a perfectionist and a natural ingredients’ lover. For my perfume he mixed with a very good balance a wonderful orange blossom from Tunisia with a rice powder and a very well selected “animalic musc”.  Dominique shares some characteristics with PooPooPidoo. He is not so shy and innocent, but appears to be. ….

pierre aulas fragrance foundation Alberto morillas, Aurélien guichard and Anne Flipo

Jamais Le Dimanche won the Grand Prix du Parfum in 2010 (FIFIS)  Fragrance Foundation Award (Aurélien Guichard, Anne Flipo, Pierre Aulas and Alberto Morillas)

It was also a pleasure to work with Alberto Morillas because I knew him from my previous job at Firmenich and I knew how refined and well balanced his creations are. I worked with him on Mugler Cologne (I am still very proud of, even if it is not a big success) and Lancôme Miracle years ago. The original idea for Jamais le Dimanche in fact came from a House scent which was a mix between Amber and Incense.  Each time I smelt it I was thrilled. That’s why I asked Alberto to transform it into a fragrance and add on top a challenging and surprising accord of Marijuana leaves.

pierre aulaus and anne flipo

Pierre Aulas with Anne Flipo

For Piège à Filles I thought it was interesting to ask a female perfumer to create a fragrance  that was macho! I knew Anne Flipo through her delicate and subtle floral creations; that why I loved the challenge of asking her to create something totally opposite! She did it with brio when starting from a feminine structure (almond and heliotrope flower) and twisted it with a hot blend of spices.

The duo Olivier Polge / Laurent Bruyère was perfect for Sacré Coeur, because Olivier is calm and even tempered when Laurent one was like a wild horse !  This is very much present in Sacré Coeur because we mixed in the same fragrance very masculine and reassuring ingredients like tobacco, patchouli and leather with the aroma of Chablis Premier cru white wine that makes a surprise on top.

pierre aulaus with Aurelien Guichard

Pierre Aulas with Perfumer Aurélien Guichard

For Me Myself and I and Prends Garde à Toi, I was the first to ask Guichard father (Jean) and son (Aurélien) to work together. It was funny to see how they work together…Jean was the builder and Aurélien the crazy breaker!

Ego Facto Me Myself and I perfume

Ego Facto Me Myself and I

In Me Myself and I the ultra-feminine tuberose is married with a smoky vetiver but the best idea was to add a hemlock flower on top … like a poison…

Pierre Aulas performing in Carmen Paris

Pierre Aulas performing in the Opera Carmen

Prends Garde à Toi is inspired by the Carmen Opéra . One of the most famous Soprano’s aria is “ l’amour est enfant de Boheme, si tu ne m’aimes pas,….. Prends garde à Toi ". So we built this fragrance so it would evoke the freedom and sensuousness of the gipsy. (Jasmine flower from Egypt and cedar from Virginie). But as you need to be courageous to be Carmen’s lover, we added a natural essential oil of nettle on the top…   it is the first time nettle was used in perfumery.

At the moment I am working on the future Ego Facto fragrances with great perfumers. I have so many good mods but the problem will be to choose which to launch first. But hushhhhh  this is too early to unveil my secrets. Let’s wait till mid-2016. Yes, CaFleureBon readers, I will let you know soon.

  • Mrs. MacDonald says:

I love tenors almost as much as I love perfume 😉 PooPoopidoo, made me laugh, cause I want to be loved by you, Sacre Couer, and we can live happily ever after here in Canada.

  • I love that he created a quiz to find your ego-matched perfume. I’d love to try Sacre Coeur and I’m in the U.S.

  • I am really moved by Pierre’s deep connection to music – I understand him completely! As a result, my favourite quote from him is “With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”

I’d love to win Poopoopidoo. I live in Canada.

  • I love when Pierre says ‘With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language’. Absolutely the truth, and then when he developed a quiz to help develop facets of the self, the Ego – perhaps some things that we are unaware of…. that blind spot. I like how Pierre weaves it all together. I would like to try all his scents but “fool for love” describes me completely, so i will not deny it! 🙂 I live in the UK and would be honoured to win a bottle of Pierre’s perfume! thanks for the draw.

  • Pierre’s “personality” approach to perfumery is refreshing. Especially in a world where the trend tends to be about a specific ingredients with your “oud this” and “patchouli that” branding.

I’d imagine this stimulates perfumers’ imagination as well since they work on the personality concept rather than on making the best rose (or key ingredient of your fancy) fragrance.

I’d be delighted with Sacre Coeur shall I be lucky enough.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I faced a similar career dilemma in my twenties between becoming an opera singer and staying at a stable office job. Luckily, I found a path that allows me to sing and teach for a living. It’s great reading about perfumers like Pierre Aulas and Fabio Luisi (who I knew as a famous conductor but not a perfumer until CaFleureBon’s profile!) who are also musicians. I love that they are inspired by operatic works because it gives me a close connection to the scent.

If I’m chosen, I would love to win Prend garde a toi, Me Myself and I, or Jamais le Dimanche. Thank you!

  • I love the line about perfume as the ‘invisible language’. I never thought of it that way…..beautiful. I don’t go a day without fragrance. I did the online quiz and should I win, I would like Prends Garde a toi. I wonder why nettle hasn’t been used before. The bottles are simple, but adorable and the colors sure made for some nice photography! Thanks so much for a look into all these creative fragrance houses I haven’t heard of. I am rather new to fragrances outside the run of the mill department stores.

  • I love the creative tension between music and fragrance. As a life long singer and member of choirs and choruses, I am in awe of Pierre and the multiplicity of his creative energies. Bravo!. The notes in Jamais le Dimanche sound marvelous, but I would be thrilled to try any of the fragrances in his collection.

  • Pierre Aulas is daring! He chooses challenges, and takes risks. His wonderful work with these master perfumers is clearly the outcome of a lifetime of brave choices. I love that he started his own consulting business. Entrepreneurship is always brave!

I took the quiz, and Prends Garde À Toi was recommended for me. I agree that it would suit me best, so I would definitely choose it if I were to win the draw.

    I am in the US.

  • I can’t agree more with Pierre that “With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language”. A powerful language, more powerful than visible art I would say…
If I win, I would like Piege à filles. I have never smelt any of Ego Facto perfumes but reading the notes I think this one would be very nice on my skin, now I’m curious about it.
    I’m in Europe (Spain)
    Thanks for the draw.

  • I am really moved by Pierre’s way he approach to perfumery, so unique yet brave.
My favorite quote from him is “With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”
I’d love to win Jamais le Dimanche.
I live in Malaysia. Thank you for the draw.

  • Beautiful review. I have very enjoyed to read it. It was so interesting. My favorite quote from him is “With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”
I have already liked CaFleureBon Creative Directors in Perfumery on FaceBook. My choice would be Fool for Love.
Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • As a music lover, my favorite quote is “with Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”
I would love to try Piege a Filles. Thank you.

  • Pierre’s high words for Vera Strubi made me intrigued about her and I had to go and rad more about Vera. It seems Vera is the person who has single-handedly shaped world of Mugler fragrances as we know today and her decision to quit was not only surprising but she also left such huge shoes to fill in that her successor didn’t succeed. I am also surprised why Mugler Cologne is not best seller since it is often cited as one of the best cologne creations in the perfumista community.

Pierre’s journey also shows there is some close relationship between perfumery and other fields of arts, especially, theater and music. There is such a long line of perfumes, even from the beginning of last century which were inspired by theater or theater actors/actresses…

my choice will be Me Myself and I because it was created by the dream team of Senior and Junior Guichard. all the best wishes to Pierre. I am in the US

  • Jennifer Witt says:

What a great article. Pierre’s journey has been fascinating! The quote that sticks with me is “For me there is real link between music and perfumes; we use a lot of similar words-notes, accords, both are telling a magical story and the final aim is to touch the emotion of people around you. With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.” I love the quiz! It told me I should pick Sacre Coeur, but I think I’d prefer Fool for Love should I win. I live in the US. Thanks!

  • I really liked his quote “With music and perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”

I have always spoken to acquaintances about my love of fragrance in the terms of an invisible art form, because unfortunately most people’s idea of scent are formed from unpleasant, generic formulas generated for the masses and sold at department stores. I try to open eyes to the vast and wonderful invisible world of scent that exists out there.

My favorite scent that Pierre has worked on is A*Men. I own it and a number of its flankers including Pure Havane and Pure Malt.

I am very intrigued by Sacré Coeur and would love to win it.

Thanks for the really great article and draw. I live in the U.S.

  • I like this decision making reasoning, …”because you can continue to sing as a perfumer but you cannot continue to create fragrances as a singer!” I own Mugler Cologne and A* Men. I would like the Jamais le Dimanche. TY usa

  • I’m fascinated that Pierre is an opera singer and music lover in addition to perfumer. I’ve never known a good writer who wasn’t obsessed with music, and now I’ve noticed from your profiles here that perfumers also seem to be wired for music appreciation. I wonder why that is?

The only Ego Facto I’ve tried is Poopoo Pidoo. I’m in the US, and my choice would be Fool For Love for the overdose of cinnamon. Thanks!

  • Pierre Aulas has an interesting story and path that led to perfume, ” I decided to pursue perfume because you can continue to sing as a perfumer but you cannot continue to create fragrances as a singer!” I was really interested in his creating a proprietary quiz and enjoyed taking it. It is very hard to decide which perfume to try. He has created them so that they all can be aspects of a person’s character. Most people are not linear! I was surprised that the one for me is – Me Myself and I, so that would be my choice. I am in the US.

  • Thank you, Monsieur Aulas, for sharing your story with us, and for the co-creation of some great perfumes! I enjoyed learning of how you began in the business, “amost by chance” and about the creation of Alien.

I am a fool for love and I’d love Fool for Love indeed. I already like the FB page, of course, and am still in the US. Cheers!

  • I had such fun taking the quiz! It recommended Prends Garde à Toi, which sounds very interesting, but in the end I would probably choose Me Myself and I (the color of this one is also perfect!). The bottles are gorgeous.

Pierre Aulas, thank you for sharing your story with us. What a journey! It’s so neat to hear you were instrumental in the creation of Alien. It is the one perfume that I smelled wafting about the streets of Italy that I tracked people down until I found out what it was. No other perfume has ever done that to me.

Thank you for the generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • What I have learned about Mr. Pierre Aulas as a creative director is the fact that he had worked for Thierry Mugler perfume House and he had created perfumes like Angel and Alien which I personally adore.
What really moved me is his quote referring to music and perfume mentioning that people can use these two kinds of artistic expression in order to speak with each other with an invisible language and I totally agree with his notion since music is my greatest love (I love opera and all kinds of qualitative music) and perfume as well
In case I win I choose Jamais le Dimanche.
I am a registered reader living in EU and I thank you for this lovely review and draw as well

  • I love opera, and I love Carmen 🙂 I have lots of respect for Thierry Mugler perfumes, so I was pleased to learn Pierre Aulas had worked on the classics there. I would love to try Prends Garde à toi to see what the nettle note is like 🙂 I am in the US, thank you!

  • This was just the most interesting and fascinating read. Cannot believe Pierre Aulas was involved in B Balenciaga Alien and Chloe all amazing perfumes by the most incredible perfumers. I had heard of Ego Facto but didn’t know too much about it. I think it’s wonderful that he is also an opera singer and has appeared in Carmen. I wonder what his next perfumes will be
I took the online test and I was Prends Garde á Toi which is my choice.
    I live in the EU
We are all praying for Paris

  • Angel was a game changer, thank you for being involved in it’s creation. 🙂 I would like to win the Sacre Coeur, very much so. I have not smelled Ego Facto as of yet. USA

  • I love articles that delve into what goes into the making of a perfume, so I really enjoyed M. Aulas’ description of his relationship with each of his perfumers. I also enjoyed hearing him describe the connection between perfume and music – I am an avid music lover (classically trained violinist and lover of opera) and I’ve also always felt there’s a similarity between the two forms of art. It’s nice to hear that someone so immersed in both fields feels the same!

When I was reading the descriptions of the perfumes, Piège à Filles stood out to me. I just took the quiz on the Ego Facto website and it confirmed my choice! So if I won, that’s the scent I’d most love to experience (although Fool for Love, Sacré Coeur and Poopoopidoo also sound wonderful!).

As for my favorites that M. Aulas has consulted on, I love both Balenciaga Paris and L’Essence. In fact, BP was one of the scents that started me on my serious perfume journey, so thank you, M. Aulas!

And thanks to CaFleureBon for this draw! I’m in the US.

  • I really enjoyed this article — thank you! I love hearing about how people discover and choose their passions, and Pierre certainly has an interesting story. I think my favorite part of the interview was how Pierre described each perfumer he worked with — I especially liked how he chose Anne Flipo to make a masculine perfume. Since I love her perfumes, I’d definitely like to experience Piège à Filles if I won! I live in the US.

  • Though this blog employs some truly superb writers, there’s a real joy to hearing the perfumer’ own words. I really enjoyed his journey step-by-step as he truly started from the bottom and worked his way towards putting forth his own line. I liked this a lot:
“For me there is real link between music and perfumes; we use a lot of similar words-notes, accords, both are telling a magical story and the final aim is to touch the emotion of people around you. With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”
The graphic of Barbie ‘n bondage is GENIUS!
I think I am most attracted to Piege a Filles, so this is the one I would choose if I were to win.
I live in NYC and I did like the Creative Directors page for the extra chance. Thanks!

  • I loved reading about the journey Mr. Aulas has made. From being just a marketing developer, to an amazing perfumer. I had no idea he had influence on all those great Mugler scents. I’m a huge fan of Mugler Cologne and the Angel Men series. My choice if I win would be Jamais le Dimanche. Thank you for the draw and I’m in Canada.

  • Wow what a nice article. I really enjoyed this article . Well Pierre’s journey has been admirable and shows how people are predestined to certain things.
Everyone had already talked about it but the part where he says “For me there is real link between music and perfumes; we use a lot of similar words-notes, accords, both are telling a magical story and the final aim is to touch the emotion of people around you. With Music and Perfume you can speak with people with an invisible language.”
I really understood what Pierre meant by that. As well as the songs, perfumes also transmit magical stories, convey our state of mind and everything is told through the notes and chords composed by composers or perfumers. Music and parfume are part of this “iinvisible language” that transform and tell the history of mankind.
I’d love to try Sacre Coeur.
    I’m in the US.
    Thank you!

  • Amazing read! M. Aulas has had an incredible affect on many many fragrances. My favorite being Alien. Congrats on all the great accomplishments, and I look forwards to seeing what new creations you have for us in the future.

Jamais le Dimanche would be the one I’d love to win!

    Canadian reader

  • Angel Men is currently my signature scent, so thank you M. Aulas for that creation! I didn’t know you were involved in so many fragrances! My choice would be Jamais le Dimanche and I’m international (Toronto). Thanks!

  • Iuno Feronia says:
