I was brought into this world 42 years ago not knowing that a career in perfumes was part of my destiny, but in some way, always know that I needed beauty in my life and that I could not work without the passion of fragrance. In fact, the day I was born, the Parisian florists were on strike. To celebrate my birth, my mother did not get any flowers to her room, so instead, she sprayed a bit of perfume in the air and drew flowers for me.

My first conscience love affair with perfume was, in fact, a visual, which came at the age of 5. I saw the Fidji advertisement by Guy Laroche, the woman-island, and asked my mother if she would buy it for me. Of course this was not à little girl’s perfume, but I was so impressed by the image and so persuasive that she said yes and bought a small bottle for me. Jasmin, iris, ylang ylang, sandalwood, patchouli… When I smelled this perfume I knew the key to my femininity would always be perfume, and that the best way to express myself would be through fragrances.

Moving along the path of my life to about ten years ago, I met Alienor Massenet. I was in the process of writing a book about the creative process of 22 noses in the perfume industry. She was a junior perfumer at that time, but her work for Viktor and Rolf, Antidote, and for Armani Privé (with their jasmine) preceded her. She had worked for several years with Sophia Grosjman and I felt close to her universe. I decided she should be in the book I was preparing, and as I was writing 22 interviews and organizing the 22 photo shoots, I realized we had so much in common and that we stood together in the industry at a turning point.

I think it is interesting that we are two women of the same age. There are very few women who edit perfumes, and there are fewer noses that are women. Alienor has no ego, she is not narcissistic, and she is elegant. We love this female power behind the brand – it allows us to see women not only through seduction and eroticism, there is more to women and more to fragrance. We see all this.

The name of the brand, Memo, comes from Memory. Olfaction is our most archaic sense. One of the first we explore as human beings. It’s link to our sensations of space and time, and I believe, is something that has not been totally discovered by scientists. Perfumes have a strong connection to your soul, to your inner self… A fragrance can reveal you, transform you, it is far more powerful than people usually think.

When we started Memo in 2007, we began with Lalibela as our first fragrance. It is a chypre, which was something very important for me, and a place of pilgrimage for many others. Each plate has a significance and is an ode to the location of which the fragrance echos. The Lalibela plate came from an Ethiopian design.

We have moved so far since then, we have become very much like two parts of a whole. With Alienor, we share tastes, and therefore we like to play games in the development of new scents. As we are in the development process, Alienor will send me 10 varieties of a fragrance, and at that same time I will send her a picture or inspiration board of the one I prefer. We send to each other at the same time, and so often, we come back with the same image or reference. ‎These inspirations and references are not “pretty” in the traditional sense, they are secret, messy, but are used as a jumping off point for inspiration. Inspiration may come from a play, a word, a color, an idea, a quote, a poem, even someone…

If we visit an exhibition together, like La Belle Halleine in Bale, an exhibition about fragrance, we would pick up the same pièce of art. She loves painting, music, ballet, she is as strong, independent and fragile as I can be.

Alienor, like myself loves travels. The journey is the destination, our motto, also suits her very well. What we are looking for in our fragrances is that movement, that light, that positive side of perfumes and life. There is always a part of hope and sun in the fragrances we make. I could not work with someone that does not share this vision. Someone that would want to add too much darkness to our landscapes… We need shadows, we love the night, but I want to feel the stars somewhere in the fragrance…

What I feel is that we both work for the brand, to create an olfactive territory for Memo. We serve the brand. Memo could exist without me, without Alienor. It is not about Alienor or me, but about what suits the brand, on the long term, what is cohesive with it. Our collections (Cuirs Nomades, Graines Vagabondes) are a reflection of our DNA. Not a marketing invention.

What this all means is that we have the freedom to decide to launch or not to launch a fragrance, we do not care about what the other brands do, we are only two on board on the creative side.

Our packaging also comes from our travels. I take a lot of pictures and when they are not in our Instagram account (@claramemoparis) they help me to imagine new collections, new plates, new designs. I love patterns, minimalism can be really boring and sterile. There is a golden touch in many things that we create, maybe it comes from my Spanish origins, I want to feel the sun and the light on the products…

All these stories exemplify how personal Memo is for me. This relationship is a family affair.  My husband, John, is the president of the company. We met at an art exhibition at the Marmottan Museum in Paris. It was closed, and we were both waiting in front of the door. One thing led to another, after that, we became inseparable.

The year he joined Memo, we created Irish Leather. He is Irish, he has a strong sense of luxury and challenges us a lot with our creations…

My other passion, outside of travel and fragrance, is poetry. I began writing when I was seven. Poetry books have been my companions through life. There is a strong link between fragrances and poems in my opinion. They are both subtle, fragile…  Beauty, wherever you find it, (music, books, art), brings me peace. My first poetry book will be published this year and I am quite happy about it as I sent it to publishers without any introduction, so it went all the way until an editor on its own.

I feel very privileged being able to do my job, and working with such an artist as Alienor. I feel we can go far together, that what we do brings us to places we have never been before. The sites that I find give us the architecture of the fragrance, the atmosphere, a specific sensuality. I don’t remember à single fight with Alienor, it is always a very peaceful development, being short or being long, as if we were writing poetry (together, each of us one line, like in a ‘cadavre exquis’.) I hope this peace, this calm energy, is visible in our creations. And I also hope people feel the fun and enjoyment we have: creation is a game in the end, and we try to remain kids.

  • What did I not find fascinating in this post? I loved that she recognized at an early age that she needed beauty (in all its forms) in her life and how she craved the passion of fragrance. We are indeed lucky when placed in the paths of others with the same visions, passions, and ethics, it’s even more rewarding when we are woven into each others lives. I own and adore Quartier Latin!     Clara’s description of her working relationship with Alienor sounds so much like the relationship I have with my favorite colleague/friend. We edit a series of scholarly books together, and we too are “very much like two parts of a whole.”

    I have not yet tried anything from Memo, so I do not yet have a favorite. Manoa calls out to me, though, and if I were to win the draw, it would be the one I would choose.

    This lovely article has definitely motivated me to explore the fragrances in Memo’s collections.

    I can tell that Ms. Malloy is a writer… what a beautiful though: “We need shadows, we love the night, but I want to feel the stars somewhere in the fragrance.” I feel this way about Memo Manoa, which of all the Memo fragrances I’ve tried is my favorite. Before starting this article I put a spritz on to celebrate. One thing I especially love about the brand is the plate designs, how each tells a story of the fragrance inside. If I got lucky and won I would choose Manoa, though I’d be torn as I need to explore more of the brand!

    I love Clara’s description of working with Alienor. I’ve always loved it when that spark is present that allows the creative project to be greater than the sum of the parts, it’s so inspiring and uplifting.

    I particularly liked Clara’s description of their ethos and approach to making perfumes, that the perfume has to be how they want it to be. Thank you for choosing to be true to your vision, without bowing to the pressures of market share, branding, etc.

    I have never smelt any Memo perfumes and am happy to be guided by you. I’m in Australia.

  • Since before reading this article I knew I would have chosen Lalibela in case of win, as it was Memo’s first fragrance I was enchanted just by reading its name and notes: then I actually tried it in a perfume store in Rome and it was gorgeous, creamy, opulent and feminine as I love my fragrances to be.
    So imagine my surprise when I read it was their very first fragrance, and the fact it was inspired by an Etiopian design makes it even more intriguing to my eyes (nose!).

    I especially loved this line by Mrs. Molloy: “We need shadows, we love the night, but I want to feel the stars somewhere in the fragrance…”. That’s a concept that resonates with me at this point of my life, I’ve always been attracted to darkness in artistic expressions – even in fragrance – but I think I need the light shining through right now. All the fragrances by Memo I’ve tried convey that, starting from the solar shades of the bottles down to their compositions: you can really feel the warmth but also the continuous, beautiful movement in them.

    I have always thought the perfume ads in 1980s and before were so mesmerizing and it is amazing Clara was also fascinated by Fidji ad which is indeed creative and perfectly reflects the inspiration behind the iconic fragrance from Guy Laroche, It is also interesting she met Alienor while actually writing a book on perfumers. I hope there is English version of the book since I plan to read it.

    Also congrats on choosing the aptly suited-name for the brand because almost every perfumista will admit to the fact one of the major reasons we are fascinated with perfumes is due to memorable olfactory moments which have become important part of our memories. Best of wishes to John, Clara and Alienor on their perfume adventures. My choice will be Quartier Latin . I am in the US.

    Thanks for the nice presentation, it is a pleasure to enter even for little in the life of a creative woman (rather, two women). I like the harmony which the two souls of Memo work together. I am fascinated by the grace that conceals very clear ideas and determination. Strong ideas but lived with the joy of the children and keeping the compass bet on finding a real beauty. Brava Clara!
    I do not know very well the fragrances of Memo, but to learn something about the people behind their creative process increases my curiosity to explore that world.

  • I never knew of this house before reading the above. I was immediately caught up the Clara’s personal story when circumstances were such on the day of her birth as the Paris florists were on strike, her mother sprayed perfume into the air. I would be excited to win Italian Leather. TY. usa

    i have been thinking about the Memo line since I read this last night. What is fascinating about Clara? Easier to say what is not 🙂 The most fascinating facet is the image Clara send to Alienor, in response to the fragrances. Exchanging words and ideas through the medium of scent-that is such a beautiful thing.

    I wore Fidgi when I was in high school-it was love at first sniff. Noone else wore it-it was mine, and mine alone. I haven’t been able to find it recently.

    My choice, if I were lucky enough to win? I will have to keep reading their website. They all sound just gorgeous. I have never tried their scents-am going to reread the website to see how to buy some. I can’t imagine there are any Cdn sites, are there?

    And for Clara and John-the bottles are just beautiful. Elegant. Maybe this is a reflection of the artistic ability displayed by Clara’s mother, to celebrate the day you were born. I am very interested to learn more about Memo, and its founders.

  • Fidji was also one of my first parfumes and the way a lovestory starts in front of a musseum in Paris also happened to me. It was in front of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and I met there my best friend, even if we live no more in Paris…but yes! A good relationship can start influenced by art. And perfume is also an art…I don’t know Memo fragances and I would like to discover this line.

    I have only admired Memo from a distance as I live in the Deep South where such rarities are hard to find…
    I love Fidji too, I truly enjoyed reading Alienor’s story of her introduction to perfumes and her collaboration with Clara on the Memo line. I live in the US and will need to do some research to pick one out!

    I don’t have a favorite Memo Paris fragrance but after reading all of the descriptions I’ve added the two sample sets to my wish list! If I would win, though, I would love to receive the Ilha Do Mel Perfume. It sounds divine.

    First I have to say that Clara Molloy is a very attractive woman elegant with style not only on the outside but also in the inside, She has a subtle almost quiet inner power, a gifted person with many talents (perfumer and a poet, music lover) all these fine qualities are eminent on her work one can see her aesthetics on the bottles of her perfumes and I quote her own words: “There is a golden touch in many things that we create, maybe it comes from my Spanish origins, I want to feel the sun and the light on the products” this golden glow on perfumes bottles is simply amazing and I strongly believe that this “golden glow” exists in the very perfume itself.
    I have no favorite Memo perfume since I never had the chance to sample anything from this House.
    In case I win I would love to have the Ilha Do Mel Perfume, it sounds delicious. I live in EU (Greece).

    The entire piece was a beautiful story from Clara’s birth and her mom spraying perfume to create flowers, to the first perfume she was bought at age 5 to how she met her husband outside a closed museum. I have always enjoyed the Memo line and have been lucky to be able to try them here in Dubai for quite some time. The packaging matches the gorgeous scents and I am glad that even they come from Clara’s life experiences. I would love a bottle of Irish Leather, I live in the UAE.

  • I loved reading about Clara’s mother spraying perfume and drawing flowers when she was born. I thought that was so cute and maybe was the reason she loves fragrance!

    I have never tried anything from this house, but I really enjoy the selection. There’s fragrances from every type of weather and occasion.

    My choice would be Moon Fever though. I love the name first of all. But I also love the notes as well. The bottle design is also incredible!

  • I loved that Clara came up with Memo from “memory,” because of the link between scent and “our sensations of space and time…” I find this fascinating and one of the reasons fragrance moves me in the way that it does. I am thrilled when I read something like this, because it reinforces the poetic side of scent, which is what has reeled me in. I suppose that’s my DNA, as well. I haven’t tried any of the Memo fragrances yet, but I have read about Shams and Italian Leather here, and about Kedu and Irish Leather on other blogs, and I am pretty intrigued about some fine ingredients like the sesame absolute, for instance.
