CaFleureBon Blogathon: Breast Cancer Awareness 10/17/2011 + vero kern Rubj Extrait “Draw for the Cure”

October 16, 2011October 31, 2011

The NFL's "Crucial Catch": Real Men Wear Pink for Breast Cancer … Game balls with pink ribbon decals used for every down October 10

If it's Pink it must be October or, Real Men  Wear Pink

There are four words that no woman wants to hear: "You have breast cancer. "October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everywhere you look pink ribbons proliferate. Corporate America embraced breast cancer to announce their affiliation to the cause using the pink ribbon to sell their products/ services. One can Sip for the Cure, Shop for the Cure, Cook for the Cure, Race for the Cure, Charge for the Cure, Dress for a Cure, Clean for the Cure but there is still no cure.

Celebrity survivors who have gone public include: Carly Simon, Olivia Newton-John, Sheryl Crow, Dr. Kylie Minogue received an honorary doctorate for her work raising awareness of breast cancer at the Anglia Ruskin University this year, Melissa Etheridge, Edie Falco, Kate Jackson, Suzanne Somers, Briggitte Bardot, Marianne Faithful and Jane Fonda

And there is more… Christina Applegate, Jaclyn Smith, Cynthia Nixon, of E! Hoda Gotb, Betsy Johnson, Gloria Steinem, Ruby Dee, Shirley Temple Black (the first to publicly announce  her  breast cancer diagnosis in1973),Martina Navratilova ("I cried," the tennis legend, 53,  told PEOPLE. in 2010 ,"It knocked me on my ass, really"), Dorothy Hamill, First Lady Nancy Reagan, Diahann Carroll, Peggy Flemming and… the list goes on and on. Not surprising, breast cancer is one of  the hottest causes supported amongst some of the biggest names in the sports, fashion, media, and entertainment industry.

My flash point came with the death of my cousin Stefania, after her two year battle. She had just turned forty when the disease took her from her family. Her loss was unacceptable. To honor her memory, I assembled a compilation album with a little help from my (music industry) friends who donated their services pro bono, the project came together.

Joan Jett and Hernando

The album, "It's About Eve", was dedicated to promote Breast Cancer Awareness to young women through the music of independent female artists. The compilation was anchored by long time friend, Joan Jett. Released October of 2002, the CD received favorable press and a Billboard Magazine featured Spotlight Pick. One of the bands was signed to a major label from the exposure. The album spread the awareness as intended!

SaranneRothberg,  Joan Jett ,  Lori Ross

While vetting breast cancer foundations, I was introduced to Lori Ross through a mutual friend. Lori founded The Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation in loving memory of her mother, Elizabeth "Libby", in 1999, the same year my cousin passed away. Also having lost my mother to cancer made us bond in the fight against the disease. The Foundation was started to assist women, their families and friends the emotional and physical challenges of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery through our support programs.Over the years I've been a supporter of the Foundation and most recently a board member. Funds raised by the foundation support services for patients and survivors and do not go to research. http://www.thelibbyrossfoundation.com/

Making a significant difference in the lives of women afflicted with breast cancer through unique support programs, the Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation has helped over 10,000 women nationwide. We have entered the second decade with a renewed dedication to the fight against breast cancer.
All of us involved  with The  Libby Ross  Foundation thank www.cafleurebon.com And especially Editor in Chief Michelyn Camen)  for  hosting this blogathon  on their site. Please use  our Libby Ross foundation Banner on cafleruebon for any donations (donated by Michelyn and Didier) for the amazing  fragrance, beauty, fashion, home fragrance, and music  draws.(my donation will be ten copies of  It's All about Eve cds)

 Six Degrees of Separation

Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person on Earth, so that a chain of a friend of a friend statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps or fewer.

I believe it it was a fragrant fate that brought  Hernando, "My Knight" into my life and  thus connects our first draw ( Please donate  $5 to   www.libbyrossfoundation.com  to enter to win  Vero Kern's RUBJ

1. I was The New in Niche  Columunist  for Basenotes and reviewed Vetiver Dance by Andy Tauer( expunged from their sites). This was before his great success and he was a chemist by day and a Perfumer by night.

2. Andy Tauer introduced to me to his mentor Vero Kern

3. I wrote my first review of RUBJ  (which became  my  ultimate orange blossom scent) for Sniffaplooza Magazine before it was widely known

4.  In 2008 I wrote for Sniffapalooza Magazine. It was a rainy day before my birthday when I stopped into Sherry Lehmann,( a fine wine store in NYC )   for a gift that my Southern boyfriend  (Mr. X ) woud present my parents.  (I met  Mr X on Basenotes and helped him to become a Contributor for Sniffapalooza Magazine). I struck up a conversation with a handsome and polite sales associate – Hernando Courtright– about Frapin 1270. Did he know it was also a  perfume?

5. Hernando became a friend; he joined  the  Event Group Sniffaplooza and has been a regular attendee ever since. Hernando  was a guest contributor for CaFleureBon early on is my number one fragrance  fanboy .At  the 2011 Sniffaplooza  Spring Fling, he was a speaker on behalf of the Libby Ross  Foundation.

6. As a trained Aromatherapist, Vero  created  a burst of sunshine in RUBJ… using Moroccan orange blossom, and Egyptian jasmine, these ingredients are   known to be uplifting.  Hope in a flacon!  for the Libby Ross Foundation, where Hernando is one of the 8 volunteers that work tirelessly for helping  men and women anf

About Vero Kern

Originally trained as a pharmaceutical assistant, Vero Kern came into contact with aromas and fragrance ingredients early on, sharpening those skills in her ten years in pharmacy. In 1994, and after a long period working for Swissair, she began working independently as a massage therapist and aromatherapist. A two‐year training course as an aromatherapist at the same time gave her a firm foundation for professional involvement with essential oils and absolutes. Soon Vero Kern was creating personal blends for her own clientele. From 1998, she attended a range of training courses and seminars at a perfumery college in Paris. The principal and founder of the college was Monique Schlienger who, in the sixties, was a pupil of Jean Carles, one of the greatest perfumers of the 20th century. Vero Kern's olfactory preferences lie with the classical perfumes: Guerlain, Chanel or Caron are, for her, the highlights of classical perfumery, an art which is slowly disappearing. With their sumptuous flacons and packaging, and exquisite fragrance compounds, each expressed the spirit of its age with exquisite beauty. .vero.profumo. is a chance for Vero Kern to translate this original idea of perfume as an all‐embracing concept into the present

The value of this draw is  for a 6.5 ml flacon $195.00  . My father is a survivor of breast cancer. Thankfully October is breast cancer awareness month and hopefully more people will become informed of the disease through the worldwide campaigns.

Okay, I guinea-pigged for you – I was able to select the amount once I got to the payment page. Even though I chose $25.00 from the drop-down menu, I was able to change that amount manually to $40. I think you could change it to whatever you want.
    Your transaction was approved!

I tested Hernando’s and Michelyn’s suggestion of choosing $0 at the first screen and then manually entering $5 at the bottom of the second step screen; it seems to have worked.

One note though, I am not in the US and the form is for US addresses (I used my foreign address and then just picked a random state -CA, and it seemed to have accepted the transaction).

I hope the transaction goes though, this is such a devastating disease.

How many bottles of perfume do we purchase per year? May I be so bold as to suggest that we take the monies allocated towards our next fragrance purchase and use this money to make a donation to this worthy cause, My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who are affected by this disease (and any cancer for that matter) either directly or indirectly via a loved one. I will be donating by mail but you do not have to enter me in this draw.

And Rubj is an amazing fragrance, so that would definitely be a preference. I didn’t know that Vero Kern was Andy Tauer’s mentor, but it makes good sense, and I love both perfumers output. The world of perfume wouldn’t be the same without them.

The money that I would have spent on a much coveted full size bottle of SSS Jour Ensoleille ($35.00) I am donating to the Libby Ross Foundation today via mail in honor of Michelyn for putting this together and uniting “internet perfumistas” in a worthy cause that needs our attention. Thank you to CaFleurebon and the indie perfumers contributing to these draws. I believe that we all know someone who had been affected by breast cancer.

Bless you Michelyn who put this blogathon together. Bless all the perfumers who have so generously contributed to it.

Breast cancer very recently struck very close to home. One of my dearest friends was diagnosed last week and is going into the hospital for treatment tomorrow. Contributing to this cause could not have come at a more meaningful time for me.

I’ve just sent in a contribution of $50. (Ref #: VXYE7F306F04) hoping to be entered in all the draws. But Rubj has a very special place in my heart since it first came to me from another very dear friend. It will always be my favorite.

I’d love to try Rubj, which piqued my interest some time ago.

It is still the 20th here in the West Coast so I hope my entry is valid.

    My reference # is VTHE7EF8EC72 ($5)

My wife’s auntie has been diagnosed recently with pancreatic cancer and all of us are still in shock, but the most important thing is that she wants to fight and keep going. My family now is more aware of cancer, Recently my wife and my little girl donated their hair to the cancer patients, they felt so proud and me too for them doing that.
My heart goes to all patients, and that God gives them strength and courage to keep going and to the survivors our blessings and the example to follow because they never gave up.
    God bless.
