Blue Lotus: The Flower of Buddha + “My Sweet Lord” Temple Draw

Editor's Intro:Tuesday 17 May-Wesak or Buddha day

The most important of the Buddhist festivals Wesak celebrates the Buddha's birthday, and, for some Buddhists, also marks his enlightenment and death. The day of his birth is unknown but in most Buddhist cultures it is celebrated in 2011 between May 11-May17.

Siddhārtha Gautama (Sanskrit: सिद्धार्थ गौतम; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama) was a spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism. [In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha (P. sammāsambuddha, S. samyaksaṃbuddha)] of our age, “Buddha” meaning “awakened one” or “the enlightened one.”

Guest contributor Anya McCoy the President of the Natural Perfumer's Guild helps CaFleureBon celebrate this day and its spirit of peace all year round with a special article and draw.

Buddha's Temple/by Anya McCoy

Years ago, a friend who had collected Oud for years gifted me with a very special distillation. I dabbed one drop on my wrist, and went into the garden to work. I had to quit and go inside and lay down, as the oil affected me. I'm not the airy-fairy type who “swoons” by any means, but this stuff really did something to me. I found out from my friend that aloeswood is smouldered in Buddhist temples, and that the monks have a special grade that they use to put them into meditative trances.

When I created Temple perfume, there was a strong intent behind it: I wished to bring a bit of Buddhist nirvana, and a deep peace to those who would wear it. I used Buddhist and Ayurvedic herbs in tincture, pure and natural Oud from Laos from Guild Supplier Enfleurage in it. Feedback from customers was unanimous from those who had actually visited Buddhist temples in Japan: my Temple perfume captured that fragrance.

Lotus was the flower of Buddha. The blue water lily, Nymphaea caerulea, which is called the Blue Lotus but is truly not related to white or pink lotuses, has been recognized from ancient times as not only a gorgeous scent, but a flower that has powers of altering the wearer in the kindest and most soporific of ways, much in the manner of Oud. I have some rare and precious Blue Lotus absolute that I snatched up at $600/ounce, since it rarely appears on the market.

Do you want to be calmed? Are you in a stressful time in your life? Would you like to try to treat yourself to a glimpse of Nirvana via fragrant extracts that honor Buddha? In honor of Buddha's birthday, I will create a one-of-a-kind flanker of my Temple perfume, and incorporate some of the beautiful Blue Lotus in the perfume.

Temple is only offered in one size, due to its rarity, a 3.5ml mini, and I will be happy to gift a CaFleureBon reader with it. Good luck in the draw! Draw closes May 23, 2011

  • This was such a nice write up. Calm yes, that sound good to me. My life filled with work, daily hurdles and a family that some days drives me out of my mind…..a fragrance with calming qualities would be a welcome pleasure.

  • I would love to 'win' this! I've visited the thousand Buddha temple in Guangzhou a few times…each time, I find something more amazing…

  • Alexander Rachev says:

  • Z. Boudreaux says:

Anya is so generous! And this adaptation of an already beautiful perfume sounds amazing.
Sign me up for the draw!

  • Hmmm, it would be nice to win it, I have never been in any temple nor in India. Thanks for entering me!

  • chayaruchama says:

    How gracious, Ms. Anya !!!
I smelled blue lotus but once- and it WAS divine.
I can only dream of it …

  • Laurie Cortez says:

Sounds so amazing!  I am so grateful for all of the teachings of Buddha and love to smell fragrances that are most calming and spiritual …. I would be honored to smell and wear this fragrance… Thank you

  • I have no knowledge of Blue Lotus and after reading this article, that is unfortunate for me. I would be most appreciative of the meditative trance that the perfume may induce.  I need to find a calm corner of my own mind currently there is chaos. I would not claim to need stress relief more than anyone else but I can tell you that momentary escape from stress would be of great value to me currently.
I have always believed in the chemistry of hormones, skin and mood. Fragrance is the tangieble embodiment of that connection in my mind. Between that which is known and can be seen (the body) and that which is imagined but exists in the atmosphere (fragrence) which becomes a memory forever.
This was a meaningful but brief article that I enjoyed more in color almost than words. The use of the blue was powerful and the images of Buddha were calming but in slight contrast.
Thank you for the generosity of this offer.

  • I have never smelt blue lotus. In a few weeks I will visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and I hope to see some of them.
I would love to try this fragrance. I really need some relaxing scents these days.

    Thank you!

  • Sonia Garcia says:

Wow This just sounds amazing! I totally can relate with it, I practice yoga and I always try to learn more about Buddha and his teachings. Oh and George Harrison, OMG he was sure the quiet one, but he learned to be an amazing songwriter and gave us all a bunch of beautiful, amazing songs.
    I hope I win this, sounds beautiful…

  • Never smelled the exotic blue lotus, but would love to!  Thanks, Anya, and please enter me in the drawing.

  • Loved the George Harrison video! So sad that he is no longer with us.  I would love to be in the drawing.  I could use a little more calm in my life.  Thank you.

  • Trying to achieve calmness is so hard in these hectic times.  A fragrance, sometimes, is all we need to bring us back to nature, a memory, or helps us center our minds, our bodies in the present moment and brings calom. 🙂 I would love to win this! Sounds wonderful! I follow the teachings of Buddha, so this is quite an interesting twist on that theme, through fragrance, that I'd love to experience!!

  • Calm, temple, lotus, a glimpse of nirvana?  Who can resist the allure?  Who would not want to enter?

  • angiefunk says:

Temple sounds absolutly stunning.  I would LOVE to be entered into the drawing.  Thank you Anya and Ca Fleur Bon for the oppertunity to win this rare and enchanting perfume.

  • Oh Anya, this one is calling to me for multiple reasons:  Having just changed my business name to Olive & Oud I'd love to experience your perfume that honors oud's history; I'm particularly interested in experiencing Enfleurage's oud after having reading her blog posts on oud a few days ago; I've never smelled blue lotus but would surely like to; and I'm having 3 a.m. anxiety attacks almost nightly the past few weeks.   How generous of you to offer this precious, intention-filled creation.

  • Temple sounds divine! I could need more peace in my life for sure as I've always huge problems to relax & often suffer from insomnia. Something that helps me calm down would be really wonderful – please enter me in the draw, thank you!

  • Temple sounds like something George Harrison would have worn.  I would love to be entered in this draw.  What a generous gift!  Thank you.

  • I did not realize blue lotus was not truly related to white or pink lotus. I am already a fan of Temple (I love the orange with the oud) and would love to try a special version of it with blue lotus.

  • Hi Everyone:
I think I may blog about the process of blending the blue lotus into Temple.  If the process is difficult, I surely will.  Blue lotus is so rare, so incredibly ethereal and gorgeous, I must carefully position it amongst the deep, delicious Oud, the yummy middle spice notes and the fun orange juice top note.  I will also include a tiny sample of the diluted blue lotus in a separate bottle for the winner to experience on its own.
Blue lotus has as many calming, meditative powers associated with it as Oud!  Just google it, and you'll find websites that sell the dried flowers and non-perfumery extracts for "high" purposes. In tiny amounts, the effect is to gently take you away from everyday worries.  Even if it isn't psychoactive, and I'm not claiming it is, the beauty of it will enchant you so much you'll be transported 😉

  • I certainly could do with a little bit of peace and tranquility at the moment!  Thanks for the draw.

  • Just watching George sing “My Sweet Lord” induces a state of bliss which I suspect would be amplified by the presence of your lovely perfume. Blue lotus, oud and your inspired touch, Anya…three sublime reasons to enter the draw. Namaste.

  • I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprize that Blue Lotus has such an ethereal beauty, as just about every scene depicted in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics shows their reverence for the blue lotus (water lily). So many scenes depict them holding, smelling and enjoying the scent of this flower!

  • I have smelled both the Temple perfume, which is truly transcedant, and the blue lotus absolute, which is difficult to describe in words, and I would love to find out how these two can be joined and transformed in the hands of perfumer as gifted as Anya McCoy. Please enter me into the draw.

  • Beautiful article, it made me pull out my sample of Temple and enjoy it all over again.  I haven't smelled Blue Lotus Absolute before, but a watery addition to temple sounds very interesting!  Thank you for gifting a lucky reader with this unique opportunity.  And please do blog about it Anya!

  • trishsmecca says:

Oh how I would love to smell the blue lotus!! The description is wonderful and no doubt this fume is divine! Please enter me in the drawing – thank you!

  • d3m0lici0n says:

Just reading this post makes me feel relaxed, in times of stress and craziness we really need something like this to make us stop, think about everything surrounding us and projecting more love and understanding.

  • After you visit the pyramids in Giza, there is a really cool perfume shop near where you exit.  I was entranced by all the bottles and scents, but it was lotus that I walked away with in a bag.  I found it very calming and meditative.  I can only imagine how it might smell as an addition to Temple. Please count me among those interested to try, and thank you Anna, for your generosity.

  • I've sampled Anya's Temple perfume -delish!-but never had the chance to sniff blue lotus absolute.  I can only imagine the combination would be amazing!  Because I've gotten to experience Temple, I don't want to be greedy.  Anya's perfumes should be experienced by as many people as possible.  The winner of this rare creation will be lucky indeed!

  • I would love to experience this perfume. I’ve only read about blue lotus, but it sounds beautiful and I would be very grateful to have an opportunity to experience its synergy with oud. Thank you Anya for sharing your special perfumes with the world through this and other draws.

  • Great article! I could almost smell and feel the peace and calm in a Buddhist temple as I read your article and imagined the scenes in my head. I could definitely use some calm and relaxation in my life right now – I’ve been working 100 hours a week and only have 2 days off the whole of this month. Hope I can stop imagining the smell of calm in my head, and start sniffing the real thing!

  • Ooooh…I'm curious to smell (and enjoy!) your Blue Lotus Temple creation. LOVE the idea of creating  fragrances that capture a time / place / mood or honors a special being…like Buddha.
Also, appreciate learning Oud = Aloeswood. Was originally introduced to the term "aloeswood" in an  essential oils workshop, where the folks taught that aloeswood was sandalwood. My instinct was that info was erroneous. Have been on alert for the correct info ever since. Thanks!

  • I hope I am not too late to enter this draw! I have yet to experience Oud. I love the idea of this perfume!

  • Elaine Haynes says:

Sounds wonderful, exotic tranquility, I could use that! Thanks for the opportunity. 🙂

  • you smell!!! says:

It sounds so inviting, whatever that gives peace and tranquility is more than welcome in these crazy times!
Please enter my name in the draw, and also what a song! he is one of my favorite artists of all time. The album where that song comes from is "All Things Must Pass" is amazing and is one of my all time fav albums, it should deserve more attention because it shows George at the peak of his songwriting career.

  • Realizing that it's much to late to enter the contest, I just had to express my deepest appreciation for your beautiful words and lyrical expressions of scent. I'm there, loving, healing and feeling so blessed. Thank you.

  • Thank you for all the beautiful comments, everyone, and thank you Michelyn for pulling such beautiful images and music into this story of Blue Temple.  I will begin to work on it tomorrow, and I will keep the winner, HollyJae, up-to-date on the process.  As I said, I may blog about it because pulling a perfume apart to insert an aromatic is tricky.  Let's see how calmly the blue lotus takes root in the Temple.
