On September 8th, I attended the beautypress SPOTLIGHT DAY held at Midtown Loft & Terrace (on Fifth Avenue).  A brief primer on beautypress: launched in Europe in 2000 and in the US in 2009, it is the largest international PR network for the beauty industry. It is a digital communication tool utilized by leading brands to connect directly with beauty editors across the cosmetic markets in the US and Europe. SPOTLIGHT DAY is held three times a year and showcases 10-12 presenters to a wide variety of editors. The range encompass fragrance, hair care, skin care, nail care, beauty and health and wellness brands.  This past  SPOTLIGHT DAY featured two fragrant participants, Perfumed Plume and Arts& Scents.

The Perfumed Plume Awards for Fragrance Journalism is a new independent initiative conceived by two fragrance industry insiders, Mary Ellen Lapsansky and Lyn Leigh (formerly of The Fragrance Foundation). The goal is to recognize editorial excellence in a wider variety of categories  awarding the best in creative storytelling and visuals that capture the heart of fragrance as an art form. Lyn explained to me that the awards will be modeled after the prestigious Prix Jasmine Awards (originally in France, now defunct) and the Jasmine Awards in the UK. The first award ceremony is scheduled for Spring 2016. Sponsors and Partners include: MANEPerfume & Flavorist, GCI and The Art and Olfaction Awards.

Arts&Scents The Art Of Creation, is a small artisanal brand based in Fürth, Bavaria Germany founded by Manuela Pfannes-Völkel in 2010. Originally launched with ten fragrances and number  over twenty in the collection. The fragrances are diverse and categorized in collections-Elements, Easy Day, Travel All Over, Magic Potions, The Woodland Enchanted Series, FairyTales as well as special projects.     Fellow countryman Ulrich Lang  of Ulrich  New York offered her a spot at January 2014 Elements. Later that year, Manuala presented at Sniffapalooza Spring Fling. It was a pleasure  to see her again in New York.  Manuela told me of the latest good news; the September issue of Vogue UK chose her fragrances Cuero de Mexico and Pan Tierra were chosen for Fall Editorial.

During the day, I had the pleasure of was meeting Manuela’s mentor, the esteemed Virginia Bonofiglio (Chairperson, Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing, Fashion Institute of Technology). Virginia was Kevin Verspoor’s perfumery teacher and is a Board Director of The Perfumed Plume.

Manuela’s German heritage combined with influences from her years living in Mexico blend masterfully in the colors, scents and stories she presents us. This is what makes her line special.  “The right perfume is readily able to address all the senses and awaken all the feelings. It has its unique, special and absolutely unforgettable effect. As every new relationship secretly involved in emotion and delight. Love will never be old fashioned; it just has so many interpretations.” Manuela Pfannes-Völkel.

  • I love the name “Perfumed Plume” — so evocative and magical! I love that the collections are listed on her site as “Scent Collections” and “Scent Lyrics” — rather than list by notes, these are equally evocative and magical! I think the sampler set is what I’d want to try, since the notes in Night and Dawn and Pan Tierra both sound too wonderful for me to be able to choose a favorite. US resident — thanks for the draw!

  • I don’t believe you can ever have too many awards. So I’m glad to have a new one to watch. I learned Manuela has the interesting combination of having a German heritage and living for a time in Mexico. I choose the bottle of Pan Tierra should I be picked. 🙂 USA

  • I am well aware of the reputation of the Jasmine Awards and hope Perfumed Plune Awards establish itself soon in the same category. I didn’t know Ulrich Lang is German. Being based in New York, I thought Mr. Lang is American. Arts&Scents is from Germany and after experience with April Aromatics, I have high expectations. When it comes to natural perfumery, April Aromatics is currently the only natural perfumery brand I know from Germany.

thanks so much for the wonderful draw. My choice will be the sample set. I am in the US

  • Perfumed Plume Awards sounds great. Editorial excellence should be rewarded and encouraged.

I learned that is an artisanal brand from Bavaria and it sounds awesome. I also learned that Manuela’s German heritage and the Mexican influences really helped her create his wonderful scents “Manuela’s German heritage combined with influences from her years living in Mexico blend masterfully in the colors, scents and stories she presents us. This is what makes her line special.”.

    The sampler set sounds amazing!

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you very much! Wish you all the best!

  • Awards are important to celebrate the hard work of artistry, in whatever form that might be.

I have learned about Manuela and her collection of scents and its always great to check out new things.

Would love to win the 50m of Light and Dawn, A Vampire’s Love. Live in the UK. Cheers!

  • Lovely to read of Manuela’s success.Obviously its not stopping here either! Fantastic! Reading about the German / Mexican mix put an interesting note to it all, a successful combo and one I can feel working as a partnership.I’d love to experience Cuero de Mexico and thank you for the generous worldwide draw.
The Perfumed Plume Awards are certainly relevent and I imagine highly overdue in many cases. The writing, storytelling that goes hand in hand with fragrances is a partnership of necessity. Such creativity needs to be acknowledged more. I live in Aotearoa (NZ)

  • I think it’s nice that we now have the Perfumed Plume Awards to replace the Jasmin Awards. Good work should be recognized. I am amazed that Manuela Pfannes-Völkel already has so many fragrances in her collection. I noticed that Manuela and I were both” made in Bavaria”. as are her fragrances. 🙂 I love the name and notes of Night and Dawn A Vampire’s Love, but I think I would like to try the sampler set which I hope includes it. In the US.

  • I wondered why there wasn’t a U.S. Version of the Jasmine Awards, so I’m happy to learn about the Perfumed Plume Awards. I had never heard of the Arts&Scents line at all–the colorful artwork is very appealing. I’m in the U.S., and I’d choose the sampler set.

  • Perfumed Plume Awards I am glad that these awards were initiated and hope to become well established and respected in the field of the Art of high Perfumery.
What I have learned about Manuela is that she is German but much of her aromatic creations dwell on her experiences and memories from her living in Mexico. Also I was happy to learn that two perfumes from her aromatic line have been chosen by Vogue Uk magazines edition to be presented in the fall issue and I want to wish her all the best . I am a registered reader in EU and in case I am chosen to win, I would like to experience the sampler set. Thank you for this lovely review and draw as well.

  • An artisanal brand from Babaria….. but with memories from Mexico. I don’t know this brand but considering its succes I would like to discover it soon, specialy Cuero de Mexico and Pan Tierra, these 2 names are appelaling from me, but as I can’t choose if I win the draw, I would like to discover this brand with the sampler set. I’m in EU. Thanks!

  • Creative storytelling is a huge part of making people aware of new and artisan fragrances. Especially if it concerns niche and indie houses. Samples of these perfumes are not widely available. Reading about these perfumes is a big part of awareness about these fragrances. I applaud the initiative of the Perfumed Plume awards.
I never heard about Arts&Scents before and to think that Germany is so nearby. I love their use of bright colours and the brand seems very interesting. I would be very interested in a bottle of Cuero de Mexico. I live in EU. Thanks for this lovely draw!

  • Amazing review! I would very like to go and see an award like this one. I suppose that, that was fabulous. These Art&Scents perfumes sounds incredible. I think I would very love Night and Dawn A Vampire’s Love, and Pan Tierra. These two sounds truly wonderful. If I would as lucky to win, my choice would be Pan Tierra, because I suppose that one is the sweeter scent. Thank you for the draw. I’m a registered reader. I live in Europe.

  • Great article, thanks for the re-cap! Very excited for my friends Lyn and Mary Ellen on their new venture, the lovely, creative Manuela who continues her artistry and passion. I live in the Perfumed Apple!

  • I think it’s always a positive to recognize and encourage thoughtful journalism so the Awards are a great idea. This is the first I have ever heard of the perfumer and her line and I’m very interested! I live in NY in the US, and if I had to choose, I would say the sampler set, as they all sound dreamy! Thanks!

  • I agree that Perfumed Plume is an evocative name. I always seek out the articles that win Jasmine Awards, so I’m happy to have another outlet of discovery. ARts & Scents sounds like they have some interesting scents. I believe this is the first time I’ve heard of them. If I won I would choose the bottle of Nigt and Dawn A Vampires Love, mainly because, if I’m honest, I think it’s a cool name. USA. Thanks for the article.

  • I love the idea of the Perfumed Plume Awards and I’d like to nominate Cafleurebon! The Arts & Scents collections sounds diverse and very appealing to me–I’d love to have a 4 x 10 sampler set. I’m in USA.

  • Good idea to acknowledge writers and bloggers. I bet you spend a lot of time on your reviews and stories, so The Perfumed Plume awards sound great. I am not familiar with arts&scents so I would love the 4x 10 sampler. It is a huge line. i like that Mexico influences her

  • The new Perfumed Plume Awards is an excellent idea if it encourages the stimulation of consumer interest and passion in the fragrance category. If it weren’t for the bloggers and writers, most of us would be in the dark. I learned that Manuela Pfannes-Voelkl of Art&Scents brings her German heritage combined with influences from her years living in Mexico and masterfully blends the colors, scents and stories in her fragrances. I live in the US and would like to win the sampler set.

  • I like the idea of the awards. Lots of people put in countless hours towards writing and I think it’s fair if they were recognized for their hard work. I had no idea the house was based in Germany. They seem like they make very high quality stuff. I live in Canada and would love to win the sampler set.

  • After reading this article, I searched Perfumed Plume site. I like the concept and motives that have been the inspiration to establish Perfumed Plume Awards for Fragrance Journalism. I’m very curious of the Fragrance Books Category. Of course, I will follow Perfumed Plume Awards. The page is highly recommended.
Arts&Scents has created wonderful, artistic site. When enter, you immediately know, it is all about art. Manuela Pfannes-Völkel says: “We do love all the paints of life!” Perfumes, labels, packages are defined as art. Descriptions of Arts&Scents perfumes are very nice. They are mutually different, “colorful”. I’m sure that Manuela’s experience of Germany and Mexico gives additional virtues to the perfumes. “Love will never be old fashioned; it just has so many interpretations”. Beautifully said and true. I suggest you to explore Arts&Scents site, it looks amazing. Thank you for all the links, this is the very informative article, Hernando. I’d love to choose NY Steel Flowers. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • I think the Awards are a great idea! Fragrance writers should be appreciated. I didn’t know about Arts&Scents before this article, but they sound like a very good house. I like all the choices they have and I will most likely buy something in the future. My choice will be the sampler set.

    Canada

  • I’m happy to hear of the perfumed plume awards! Recognition is so important within the perfume community, and accolades will be well deserved, I’m sure! Arts & scents sounds fascinating and I’ll be sure to need pan tierra. It sounds delicious! That would be my choice. I’m in the US.

  • I definitely think great fragrance minds should be recognized. I’m part German so I really like that Arts&Scents represents their country. I will surely buy later on. For now I will choose the sampler set. Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada
