Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle (Ralf Schwieger) 2018~Review + Sheer Iris Draw

Christophe Cervasel and Sylvie Ganter of Atelier Cologne via Instagram

Premiering late January (exclusive to Atelier Cologne Boutiques and Sephora.com) is a sublime new addition to the Collection Chic Absolu, named Iris Rebelle. It was composed by Master Perfumer Ralf Schwieger of MANE, who has worked with Atelier Cologne's Creative Directors and founders Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel since the House was founded in 2009. Ralf Schwieger's work for Atelier Cologne includes Orange Sanguine, Vanilla Insensee, Sous le Toit Paris, Bergamot Soleil, Cedrat Envirant, and Pomelo Paradis (a CaFleureBon Best of Scent in 2015). With 18% concentration, Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle stays true to the DNA of the House, cologne with sillage.

With Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle, Ralf Schwieger shows once again why he is one of the most sought after perfumers in the world. If you are a fan of the modern masterpiece Hermes Hiris  and love sheer and sparkling Iris-centric perfumes, then you will surely want to add Iris Rebelle to your collection. This is a light-as-air iris that goes on as easily as a see-through gauze shirt you might throw on after a warm day at the beach. The Iris is slightly carroty and earthy, but sweetened with a floralcy that is both mauve-colored from the lavender, and slightly blush from the rose centifolia.

Opening with shards of sweet orange and bergamot, Iris Rebelle wastes no time in leaping right into the deep end of the rooty iris pool, the pepper and patchouli add slight spice and cool metallic notes, but clearly Iris is the star of this show. No one does cologne quite like Atelier Cologne, and the twists and turns within the scent are compelling, intriguing, and eminently likable. Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle is a very easy to wear and pleasing-to-the-nose scent, made even more extraordinary by a refresh spray (or three) about two hours in. With this second application comes a nuclear-increased sense of rose that shoots Iris Rebelle right into the olfactive stratosphere, transforming it from just another iris soliflores into a fragrance that is fresh, complex and exceptional. Notes: Moroccan Iris, Moroccan Orange Flower, Central American Gaiac Wood, Calabrian Bergamot, Vietnamese Black Pepper, Provençal Lavender, Grasse Rose Centifolia, Indonesian Patchouli, White Musk Accord.

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Atelier Cologne for supplying my sample. The  opinions are my own.

  • Really nice review. I have never tried any of Atelier Cologne. And I have never tried perfume with dominant iris note. But I like the iris flower and the scent of it too. The base of the review, this fragrance sounds very good. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • StellaDiverFlynn says:

Thank you for this great opportunity! I love iris in perfumery, and Robert placing Iris Rebelle close to Hiris is very appealing to me, as I enjoy sheer and elegant iris very much. My favourite Atelier Cologne so far is Jasmin Angélique, which combines galbanum and jasmin in a very compelling way. I live in France.

  • Robert has me convinced – sheer, sparkling, sheer and easy to wear is a must for me – and which allows the Iris to shine through – you got me! A lovely line up of ingredients, all of which love my skin!

My favourite Atelier is Rose Anonyme (which i have been wearing now for 3 days in a row). I would love the chance to try Iris Rebelle and live in the UK. Thanks for the draw.

  • Frédéric Chevalier says:

nice review. I have tried all of Atelier Cologne so far (I love the Silver Iris). And my favorit perfume with dominant iris note is Iris Silver Mist. Thank you for the chance. I live in Belgium the EU.

  • Richard Potter says:

Nuclear-increased sense of rose that shoots it into the stratosphere. Gotta have it. Please throw my hat in the ring. USA

  • If “Iris Rebelle” is light and breezy, peppery and rooty, then why not? Every collection of perfumes need these kinds of aromas.
I think my favourite Atelier Cologne fragrance could be “Emeraude Agar” or “Oud Saphir”
I live in the E.U. Thank you.

  • Robert’s description where he States “jumping into the deep end of a rooty Iris pool” really drew me into to this fragrance. Being an Iris lover, I’m highly interested to do how Atelier will compose this fragrance. I love there recent release of Cafe Tuberosa and Oud Sapphire. I live in Pennsylvania, USA

  • Wow, Robert’s review makes my mouth watery. Loved the description how the scent developes with the help of the rose and makes it extra ordinery.
The fact that it is made by fabulous Ralf Schwieger who created Iris Nazarena one of my too5 fragrances of all times is a safe prediction of greatness. What also makes me curious is that morrocan iris root is mentioned. I never came across an iris note which has been specifically deckared morrocan so that makes me also curious.
My favorite Atelier Cologne is Pomelo Paradis.
    I live in Germany.
Thanks so much for these wonderful draws. I m almost feeling bad for participating already three times in a week. But only almost..haha
    Thanks!

  • Robert’s review has me eager to try Iris Rebelle. I love iris and i can’t resist the “deep end of the rooty iris pool.”

  • I love “earthy carroty” iris, this one sounds amazing and Ralf Schweiger is one of my favorite perfumers. I live in the Us.

  • Elizabeth T says:

I love the idea of a refresh spray a couple hours in, and I love hearing how it changed which notes really stood out. My favorite Atelier is Silver Iris… I do love a good iris! Thanks for this review… I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds really good based on his review. A nice iris based fragrance with the help of rose. Like to try it out
    Thanks. U.S.

  • Malka Gittel Bas Reuven says:

Great review. I love Atelier’s Cedre Atlas but Robert’s description of the lure of bergamot peeking through the iris really intrigued me here.

I’m not new to Iris and adore Apres L’Ondee. They don’t make Iris like they used to, but I’d love to find out about this baby.

  • Ohmygosh this sounds amazing. I love Atelier – it works well with my body chemistry so I have several different scents. Robert gives quite the (deserved) compliment to Atelier in this review. I don’t know that I can pick a favorite. Maybe Vanilla Insensee because I wear it both on its own and layered with several other scents. I also love Bergamot Soleil, who doesn’t love Orange Sanguine (my first Atelier), Pomélo Paradis, and Rose Anonyme.
Thank you for the opportunity for this very generous draw. I will be waiting to catch it at Sephora!
    I’min the US.

  • A new iris scent, especially one from Atelier Colognes, sounds marvelous. I adore Hiris and am very glad to hear that Robert thinks Iris Rebelle will be a good scent to explore.

Atelier Colognes is one of my favorite perfume houses. When friends begin to explore perfume I always recommend a Postcard Discovery Set. Great fun and so much to learn in trying those colognes.

My favorite is Grand Neroli, with Trefle Pur and Oolang Infini close behind. I am in the US. Many thank yous for the review and generous draw.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

I like the background on Ralf Schwieger, and didn’t realize all he has done, as my primary exposure to his perfumes has been through a sample of Phlur Moab, which is quite different from the others he has done for Atelier. I’m just beginning to discover Atelier Cologne fragrances, and have wanted to sample Bergamot Soleil, Cafe Tuberosa, Rose Anonyme, Orange Sanguine, and Pomelo Paradis. My current favorite perfume with Iris is Dior Homme Parfum, and I like the above description of Iris Rebelle. I can now better understand its composition and want to add it to my Atelier Cologne try list as well. California, USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

I have Orange Sanguine, Vanilla Insensee and some of earlier releases from Atelier. I also own vintage bottle of Hiris to which Iris Rebelle has been compared. Thanks for the draw. My favorite from the brand remains Orange Sanguine. I am in US.

  • oldandsmelly says:

I really liked the way Robert describes the notes of Iris Rebelle and how it progresses. I do not have a favorite Atelier Cologne yet, but I do love iris scents and loved Hiris, so this may be it, will have to try. I live in the US

  • I don’t have a favorite Atelier fragrance, but Robert’s reviews always make me want to go out and at the very least, sample. I don’t really have any iris-centric perfumes, so this would be a first. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • “Shards of sweet orange and bergamot” — I can smell it now! My favorite iris is probably 28 La Pausa, but Iris Rebelle sounds great. I have a bit of a love-don’t-love relationship with a lot of Atelier frags — my favorite is probably Orange Sanguine followed closely by Vanille Incensee, but a lot don’t really work on me. Thanks for the draw, and I live in the U.S.

  • The notes in this juice are just great : black pepper, lavander, guiac wood, rose I like the note of iris and i like a lot this house especially california clementine. I live in the EU, thanks for the chance.

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

I love how Robert describes this fragrance. I have been a fan of Atelier from the beginning and have a huge bottle of Orange Sanguine and a travel spray of Vanille Insensee. I love so many from this line but if I had to choose one it would probably be Orange Sanguine. I reside in the USA. Thank you for this draw.

  • Robert’s description of the light as air iris sounds immensely appealing as I don’t enjoy a very heavy iris. My favorite Atelier cologne is Bergamot Soleil and I live in the U.S. Thank you!

  • Thank you Robert for this review! I like iris in perfumery but not all its sides…for example I do not like iris sharp side as in Jovoy Paris Rouge Assasin, but I like iris in Dior Homme.
From Atelier I know only Orange Sanguine-very fresh nice fragrance, but I dissapointed at its sillage.

  • I am a big atelier cologne fan girl. Rose anonyme is my favorite. I would love to win Iris Rebelle. Great review

  • I was impressed by the many ways that Robert found to say “iris” in this review. An atelier fragrance that I like is Poivre Electrique. I’m on the US.

  • I love a rooty iris and this one seems to be a winner. I am an iris fan and would like to see what Atelier did with this cologne. My favorite from them is Vetiver Fatal. I live in the EU.

  • This line has many fantastic, wearable, yet not “generic” fragrances. This sounds like a hit as well. My favorites from this line is the Cafe Tuberose and the Oolong Infini. That second spray to make it nuclear sounds great. Looks like this will be released just in time for a perfect spring debut! I live in the US.

  • Thank you so much for the great comments! This really is a wonderful addition to the Atelier canon, and Ralf Schwieger!!! I can’t even… he’s such a superstar!! xoxo

  • ahhh the way Robert describes the perfume so vividly, it makes me want to eat it!!! I love Many Atelier perfumes: Oud Saphir, Silver Iris, Cafe Tuberosa to name a few! This sounds amazing as well! I live in Maryland USA – thanks for this chance!

  • Love the image of this part: “This is a light-as-air iris that goes on as easily as a see-through gauze shirt you might throw on after a warm day at the beach” .
Thanks Atelier Cologne and Cafleurebon for another wonderful draw. I live in EU.

  • doveskylark says:

I like how you can refresh Atelier colognes throughout the day. I like this line for always being just enough, never overwhelming. A sparkly iris is just what 2018 needs. I love Oolang Infini from this line.

  • I loved Robert’s review especially the part where he mentions:
“Iris Rebelle is a very easy to wear and pleasing-to-the-nose scent, made even more extraordinary by a refresh spray (or three) about two hours in. With this second application comes a nuclear-increased sense of rose that shoots Iris Rebelle right into the olfactive stratosphere, transforming it from just another iris soliflores into a fragrance that is fresh, complex and exceptional”
I love Iris and the sense of rose really makes it unique to me! Atelier Cologne House creations like Café Tuberose which I favor much, must be exceptional and I would love to try this one!
I live in EU, thank you for the lovely draw!

  • “Goes on as easily as a see through gauze shirt” would be were I was gripped as this appeals to my kinesthetic as well as my olfactory senses, thank you for that Robert. The description of the rose riding alongside and refreshing the Iris and the Iris boosting the rose is also so tantalising to my auditory sphere, a rather splendid dialogue I would enjoy listening into.
My favourite Atelier Cologne is Oolang Infini it reflects for me the gauzy sense Robert alludes to in this review, wafting up from one’s wrist.
I live in the EU. Thank you for the lovely draw and all the comments.

  • Iris is one of my all time favorite notes and Robert’s review of this new fragrance bringing together the rooty aspects of the iris and the sparkling supporting notes makes this new scent irresistable! My favorite Atelier to date is Vanilla Insensee which I see is also a Schwieger creation. I live in the US, thank you so much for the draw.

  • You had me at Iris! Love, love this note. I haven’t explored the Atelier line. As usual, Robert’s writing is evocative and compelling. Thank you!
