It is no secret that I happen to be enamored of Sarah McCartney’s work for her London perfume house 4160Tuesdays. Her range is just chock-a-block full of beautiful and thoughtfully considered fragrances. A while back Sarah announced the pre-release of a new Eau De Parfum called Truth Beauty Freedom Love. Produced via a Kickstarter campaign, the perfume would be a tribute named for the rallying cry of the 19th Century Bohemian movement of artists, writers and free thinkers.

Sarah also found inspiration in the beautifully realized film version of E.M. Forster’s novel “A Room With A View”, a lush and luminous watercolor washed story of class distinction that takes place in both gentrified pre-Raphaelite era England, and a Baedeker-infused chiaroscuro of 19th century Florence Italy, then a pivotal stop on the “Grand Tour” of the continent. Sarah specifically remembered the scene where actor Julian Sands as the love-struck free-spirited George Emerson climbs an olive tree to proclaim his personal credo to the Italian countryside; “Truth! Beauty! Joy! The eternal YES…”.

Calling upon James Skinner, renowned scarf designer for the British company Dalliance & Noble, Sarah and James collaborated to make both a scarf and a fragrance which were then financed through their Kickstarter campaign. They met in the 4160Tuesdays studio in West London to smell different natural and synthetic materials. The result was a collection of aromas which ultimately became 4160Tuesdays Truth Beauty Freedom Love, and a stunning silk scarf to match. James created the scarf design using the plants that the materials came from, and the wildlife they support. In the corners of the scarf he placed the aroma molecules which cast a perfumer’s spell on the blend to transform it from just a mixture of materials into an elegant, wearable fragrance.

And elegant and wearable it is, in spades. 4160Tuesdays Truth Beauty Freedom Love presents primarily as an iris and wood centric fragrance, but it takes a winding and circuitous path through an 18th Century Italian field and forest floral dreamscape to get there. This is a path both full of dry hay and wheat stalks, then you’re amongst shade-dappled trees ripe with low-hanging fruit; fecund and aromatic. The hot sun on your neck and the ever-present drone of honeybees and wasps gorging themselves on the dripping juices.

The honey note is present, and frankly very few perfumers treat honey as reverently and unforgettably as Sarah McCartney. (If it’s proof you need, just try her extraordinary Centrepiece Extrait, one of my all-time top ten which I described in a Cafleurebon review as  “…the star of my collection, a pure parfum that’s like being dipped in wild honey lashed with tea, vanilla, musk, and the beautiful floral scent of frangipani…”) Just when you feel like might be overjoyed to drown in the sublime opening, the iris appears, earthy, rooty, and shot through with exquisite wood notes that are deep and polished to a high sheen with a slightly sweet violet oil.

The feeling is one of a fine silk charmeuse scarf, cool and sophisticated, reflecting light and shadow, and creating a vintage vibe that serves to remind us once again of the iconic and unforgettable fragrances of the past. As they say: “Everything old is new again”, but rarely has a scent been created that can uphold, and dare I say surpass the beauty of the old. 4160Tuesdays Truth Beauty Freedom Love is nothing short of breathtaking.

    Wonderful review! I really enjoyed to read it. This perfume sounds truly fabulously. I very love the notes, all of those. I have never had a chance to try any of 4160Tuesdays perfumes. And I’m not familiar with Room With A View movie. Maybe The Hobbit movie could inspire a perfume (that would be also an amazing perfume). Thank you very much for the draw! I live in Europe.

    What a beautiful and well written review and such gorgeous images. High praise for Sarah who is amongst my favorite perfumers. I love the idea of honey, iris and hay. I live in Europe and I think Snow falling on Cedars by David Guterson would make a splendid perfume

    What a truly beautiful review! I love perfume as a story teller and the idea to incorporate art in the form of a scarf, is something that sings to my senses as I often use perfume as my muse when creating. I loved both the book and movie A Room With a View. It harks back to days when life was more innocent and the languid summery feeling of the movie sounds like it’s been interpreted beautifully by this perfume. I would love to see a perfume inspired by the movie Melancholia, it would be sublime! All these thoughts of summer are a welcome reverie on this cold Australian winters morn.

    Sarah is amazing. I have lot of respect for her, both as a perfumer and as a commentator on forums. This has Sarah’s signature gourmand touch but also other notes that add fruity and woody elements to the perfume. Collaboration with other artists (scarf designer in this case) often produce interesting work. thanks for the draw. I think Johnny Depp’s Chocolat will make great inspiration because Sarah is fond of gourmand creations.

    I have a thorough love for Sarah’s creations and Centrepiece is one of my favorite perfumes. Il Postino, Out of Africa, Tess of the Durbiville’s, The Hours are a few I have smelled in my mind while watching.I live in the US.

    This review is about one of the most spot-on perfumes I’ve read about recently. I don’t think I could concoct a better wishlist of notes if I’d tried! Thank you, Robert, for sharing it with us. Iris and woods cutting through dry hay and wheat stalks… wow. I have not seen A Room With A View, but would love to smell a perfume inspired by The Hobbit, specifically the Shire. Wouldn’t that be a comforting scent??

    Robert, this was a wonderful and poetic review! I love the fact that this was inspired by A Room With A View. I also love the fact that she also did a scarf to go with it. Gourmands are my thing and I know I will love this one! Centerpiece is also one of my favorites by this line. The honey, iris, and woods sound breathtaking. I would love to see a fragrance inspired by The Secret Life of Bees or Anna Karenina! Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

    Wanted to say thank you to Robert a wonderful constructed review on this fragrance. Sarah you made beautiful fragrance, this fragrance, has of my favorite notes honey, tobacco, hay, apricot, and woods. This fragrance also many of the smells I grew to, living in the country. Live in the US

    That was an enjoyable review throughout, I loved the delicious description of the honey and iris interplay, the fact that this fragrance olfactorily reflects that beautiful film, and it’s “everything old is new again” soul.
    As a passionate cinephile and reviewer, I could name dozens of films that generate the wish to “smell” them.
    Having to pick only one, I’d say SUNSET BLVD. (1950), which is filled with contrasting scents: Norma’s potent tuberose perfume that suffocates Joe against Betty’s clean and fresh shampoo smell that he loves, the stuffy, musty smell of the old mansion against the fresh Californian air, etc.
    I think it’d be terribly difficult to combine all these in one fragrance, but it’d be very interesting to have two perfumes created for that film, one for its sunny, joyfull side, and one for its dark but haunting soul.

    I love that the review picks up the mood of the movie – A Room With A View – a film I love that has a distinctive look and feel in addition to a wonderful story. Truth Beauty Freedom Love sounds like a fragrance I would love – honeyed florals and fruits in the sun with a nod to yesterday. This review is beautifully written and captures what Sarah does so magically. I would be curious if a fragrance could capture the feel of Bus Stop – Marilyn Monroe as Cherie is breathtakingly achingly beautiful and sad. I live in Australia.

I’m happy to see more collaborations going on lately between perfumers and other artists, it means perfumery is starting to be taken serious as a legit and equal art form!     Great article! I haven’t tried anything from this house yet. This one sounds great honey and tobacco scents are some of my favorites and this one definitely sounds interesting. The comparison to a silk scarf definitely gets my interest sounds very smooth warming and comforting. Keep up the good work l! I am in the USA.

    First of all, a Sarah McCartney perfume is a “must-try”, that’s for sure, especially when Robert calls it “nothing short of breathtaking”. Besides, an iris & honey with a tobacco twist is not something you see every day. Truth Beauty Freedom Love must be truly outstanding.

    Now that I’m thinking of it, a road drama such as the Vanishing Point (1971) could inspire a great perfume: a scent full of gasoline, leather, hot wind and a whiff of grass and flowers. I’d buy that.

    Room with a View has been in my list for a long time, it’s about time I finally saw it; there’s another film whose characters had Truth Beauty Freedom Love as their motto: my beloved Moulin Rouge.

    So I am happy for this new perfume- it’s breathtaking iris-woody “old” perfume.

    I need to get my nose across more 4160 Tuesdays..i’ve not always had the best luck with them..and that’s not because I don’t think Sarah is super talented – she is just so prolific that it might take me a while to get a Hit instead of a Miss.

    I know I do like Eau My Soul, but this sounds even more stunning and special. Anything with a honey note – sign me up!

    I like honey in perfumes more than other sweet notes, like vanilla or tonka. So when I read that this is used in such a good way, I can’t help but want to smell it myself. Thanks, I am in the EU.

    I know that this perfume is based on bohemian concepts, going back to the 1890’s, but I smell apricots tea, which I assume is the apricots and hay. It doesn’t smell old fashion, but very new and different. Which I guess makes sense, because during this time people wanted something different, something less formal. It’s clean and herby, light and refreshing without smell like sweets, which is nice. I can see where Robert is reminded of a novel, but I see Monet’s Haystacks series, enjoying a picnic of apricots, enjoying the cool breeze and warm sun.
    If I was to turn a movie into a perfume, I would love to smell Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amelie, it would smell like Creme Brule, plums, and something floral.
    I’m currently residing in the United Kingdom.

    I remember when “A Room with a View” was released. I think it was the first “art” film I saw on the big screen. I will never forget the scenes of Florence and the Tuscan countryside. That film inspired me to study abroad in Florence for a semester.
    A movie that could inspire a perfume is “Key Largo”– that 1948 film noir with Bogart and Bacall. I wonder how a perfumer would be inspired by the sultriness, the noir, the storminess of this movie.

    I loved that movie! I saw it in high school with my best friend and later got it on video and it lived in my VCR because I watched it so much! I’ve never sampled any 4160Tuesdays but I love how often she works with other artists to really expand on her vision.

    Well, that is a gorgeous review, a gorgeous scarf, and a perfume I’m excited to smell. I do love some of the 4160 Tuesdays catalog, when they are perfect, they are spectacular! Robert really created a good feeling of the perfume, I’m thinking cool iris, subtle but interesting. In the USA and would love to win. 🙂

    Oh yes, I have seen a Room With A View. My feeling is that it was more sepia than lush watercolor, so the use of iris and woods makes sense to me.

I won’t be entering the draw because I have a bottle coming any day now as I crowdfunded this fragrance a few months ago!     From the 4160 brand i do own 30ml bottles of Eau My Soul and Silk, Lace & Chocolate.

    I’ve never stopped to think what movie could inspire a perfume. I would adore a perfume inspired by Rosalind Russell as Auntie Mame. A Room with a View was and always will be a favorite movie of mine. Watching the story unfold makes me feel that I am floating outside of time. And Helena Bonham Carter is a miracle.

    What movie could inspire a perfume…hmmm … Pretty Woman (1990) ?
    From 4160 Tuesdays i do own Maxed Out-the one made for/with Max – Youtube reviewer , and a small decant of Eau My Soul .Both are fantastic fragrances.Maxed out is like double the price of regular ones , but it was worth it.

    A Room With a View has been on my list of movies to see for a long time! I should really watch it already, costume dramas are my thing.

    The smooth, sumptuous, restrained, natural feeling comes across, like people in corsets exploring the natural world and the emotional world too. Truth Beauty Freedom and Love are all things we could use more of–I’d love a chance to try!

    One movie I’d like to see made into a movie because it was so engaging to the senses without being hedonistic is Uprising: the Legend of Michael Kohlhaas starring Mads Mikkelson. Between the visuals and the music and the soundscape I felt like I could smell the movie already. In a good way…

    A Room With a View has been on my watchlist for some time. I’m definitely watching it in the next couple of days.
    A movie that could inspire a perfume could be Pan’s Labyrinth. A very rich and dark fantasy world is a great inspiration for a new perfume.

    A Room With a View has been an all-time favorite of mine. I saw it in the 1980s as an older teen and watched it many times. I had a crush on Julian Sands and Daniel Day-Lewis, but mostly I think my crush was on that beautiful world at that time which was portrayed so wonderfully in the film.

    I also love The Sound of Music, and wonder what the smell of the “hills” which are “alive with the sound of music” would smell like. I also wonder what the beautiful Baroness von Schrader in the film would smell like- very elegant , to be sure.

    The review of this perfume is well done, easily read. I imagine my old professors giving high marks for flowing well and being descriptive without being pretentious.
