It is hard to believe that Dr. Ellen Covey was once more well known for her prize orchids than for her cult indie perfumes. This month Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes celebrates their third anniversary and the launch of Ellen Covey’s new fragrance  which will be co branded with Blackbird Ballard in Seattle. The launch is kicked off by a gala celebration that is also the July event in the Northwest Indie Perfumers’ Circuit.

A Summer's Day by Charles Kaufman

The new Blackbird/Olympics Orchids perfume celebrates the dry season and the warm, peaceful days of summer in the Pacific Northwest, when walking anywhere from a country road to a city greenspace brings the powerful scent of tawny dry grass, fir and cedar trees baking in the sun releasing their sharp, incense-like resins, and juicy ripe blackberries tempting us and the blackbirds with their jammy, musky sweetness; the juxtaposition of extra-dry ambery-woody notes with just a touch of juicy fruit.

Notes: Himalayan blackberry fruit, dry grass and leaves, elemi, cedar wood and resin, amber, fir balsam absolute, musk

  • Fazal, the Himalayan blackberry is a variety that was introduced to the Pacific Northwest by fruit growers over a century ago. It found the climate here to its liking, and has since spread like a plague to become an invasive weed. The fruit is big, sweet, and juicy, and the smell of the ripe (or over-ripe) fruit is one of the most characteristic scents of summer in this part of the world.

  • It was a truly wonderful evening, and Blackbird is a marvel. Even on a warm evening it had incredible lasting power: The blackberry did a do-si-do with the woodiness for hours. Just when I thought the fruit was gone, it was back again. Thanks to Ellen and everyone for a perfect Saturday capper.

  • I so wish I could have been there! I am sure it smelled wonderful. I look forward to trying Blackbird; it sounds transportive.
