Melancholy can be brought on by many things: loss, painful memories and the unbearable ache of unrequited love.  It is only rarely that I come across a perfume that captures this complex emotion.  Olivia “Livvy” Larson of La Fleur by Livvy has composed a natural fragrance that is undeniably beautiful and sad.  Forbidden Love is inspired by Livvy’s imagining of an impossible relationship set in the Floating World:

Hirezaki Eiho Bijin by Garden

Hirezaki Eihô Bijin by Garden

I see her silhouette as she gracefully floats in Zori. Her obi tied in a simple knot.  The nape of her neck is exposed as she turns around the corner at the street lamp.  She has no idea that I wait for her passing each night on her way back from the tea house.  Her kimono smells of a rich scent; a combination of orange blossoms, vanilla, and lilies laced with tobacco.  The Cypress trees and full moon heighten my senses.  At that very moment a gentle waft of burning incense catches my breath from temples nearby.  I am in love with her but she can never love me back for it is forbidden to love.

Sadness Hirezaki Eihô

The story is being told by a young Japanese man in Kyoto, Japan who is in love with a Geisha.  Geishas were skilled artists, trained in music, dance, games, calligraphy, entertainment, flirtation, and the art of love, taught from childhood.  If a geisha was exceptionally talented and beautiful she would often have a patron. Geishas were forbidden to marry or fall in love, lest they be forced to give up their profession or shunned by society.

Forbidden Love - Eiho Hirezaki 1881-1968

Forbidden Love – Hirezaki Eihô 1881-1968

Forbidden Love opens with a frosted, camphorous lily flower, aloof yet seductive.  Green tea, sake and vodka are gracefully served to guests, as a shamesin(a three stringed guitar) plaintive melody fills the tea house.  She glides into the room, this beauty, wearing a floral brocade kimono intricately patterned in shades of amber. Livvy’s deft touch is felt here as she has woven her geisha an obi of vanilla, oud, and incense.  The scent of tobacco clings to the geisha’s sleeve as her arm brushes her admirer’s coat. Her face is a pleasant mask, but her eyes flicker for a moment with joy then sadness evoking sweet smoke that co-mingles with the lily flower.  This is where the fragrant story is forced to end; love is forbidden

Forbidden Love conveys the unmistakable beauty that is at the heart of lost love.  It wears close to the skin, much as a geisha’s scent should.  The longevity is 4 hours on my skin. On my shirt, I found longer lasting scent.  I find the brevity on my skin to be quite appropriate, matching the fleeting glimpse our young man gets of his beloved geisha each night, but her scent lingers on his coat as she brushes his arm .

Writers Note:  Forbidden Love will launch November 1st on La Fleur By Livvy. Ms. Larson took great care in choosing the aromatics used in this perfume, trying to keep as authentic to Japan as possible.  The Lily Absolute she uses is derived from Lilium auratum, a lily native to Japan.  Cypress is a nod to Hinoki, a Japanese cypress.  Green tea and incense, especially agarwood (oud), are both prized and ritualized in Japanese culture.  The sake note comes from Ozeki Sake which is brewed and bottled in Hyogo, Japan. Forbidden Love is available for purchase November 1, 2015. • What intrigues me is that it’s about an geisha and I am fascinated with geisha life history! My favorite book is memories of geisha. I live in USA in Ohio. I think most of us experience unrequited love, some of the time it’s ourselves giving it.

  • Its not the intrigue about the perfume its the intrigue about the world of a Geisha, a secret world us Westerners will never really know. I never read the book but remember being mesmerized when watching the movie Memoirs of a Geisha. From the make up to the clothing it was pure beauty and I can only imagine wearing a perfume that exudes exactly those feelings. Like stepping into a forbidden world for a moment in time. I am in the US and I believe that most of us have experienced unrequited love at some point 🙂 Thank you for the generosity for this amazing draw. I also love the artwork that was chosen.

  • I’m fascinated by Japanese culture in general. I must say that the graphics in this post were stupendous! What a visual treat. All the notes in this fragrance are wonderful to me. Thanks for alerting us to this new release and the lovely post. And yes, I’ve experienced unrequited love! In the US.

  • I’m stunned by the beauty of the art of Hirezaki Eihô. I was introduced to his art many years ago. I’m sure these works of art perfectly fit into the story of Olivia Larson’s Forbidden Love. I’m also amazed by perfumer’s selection of precious ingredients for this perfume. That’s why I would love to explore Forbidden Love. Olivia Larson belongs to the circle of the most talented and most creative artisan perfumers. Unrequited love, maybe it existed once upon a time, it seemed like that in a real moment of the past. I rather recall it as the flash in growing up. I live in Croatia, EU. Thank you.

  • Just the name Forbidden Love conjures up romantic and sensual thoughts. It sounds incredible and I know it has the makings of a masterpiece. As most of us, I’ve felt unrequited love. It’s a feeling that can’t be explained. Thank you for the draw and I’m in Canada!

  • I’m intrigued by sake and vodka notes. 🙂 The name along with the Geisha back story is inviting also. I would guess I’m in the club with the rest of the human race in having felt unrequited love. USA

  • Sounds wonderful, I love a lily note, and the combinations sound unusual and intriguing. I have experienced unrequited love. I live in Canada.

  • I find it so neat that this is a scent based on a feeling, and especially one that’s “sad”. We don’t often think about “sad’ things by choice, but there’s certainly an element of beauty to it. I’m curious to know how this would translate into Forbidden Love.

I live in Canada and yes, unrequited love is definitely a familiar thing – it hit particularly hard at 20!

  • I experienced unrequited love. while on a trip overseas, many years ago. What intrigues me about Forbidden Love, is that it is a fragrance that is personal and unique. It is a fragrance that exudes exclusivity. A fragrance that is an extension of the person who wears it. Forbidden Love is perfume that takes one on a journey of that unrequited love. Like the geisha, it embodies the power of those who decide their own fate with courage and determination.

The notes in Forbidden Love have been approporiately chosen such as sake and green tea because these are important parts of Japanese culture. I can only imagine many men falling in love with Geishas and I am sure some Geishas might also have taken the dangerous path of leaving their profession in pursuit of love. unrequited love actually happened to me during my undergraduate years but in hindsight i am glad with the outcome because it was also due to young age and lack of life experience. I am in the US

I’m always interested in seeing new well-made naturals! The notes definitely intrigue me here–florals paired with smoky notes. I have yet to find a good, smoky, floral incense (Chanel 22 is nice, but is less about the incense to me) so I’d love to try this! Like probably everyone…of course I have experienced unrequited love–in high school…college…grad school…I guess I can be a bit of a romantic! I’m in the US.

  • Michael, this is a particularly lovely review….just perfect words to describe a perfume of grace and beauty. The paintings were very apt as well. I very much enjoyed the review! It is interesting that Ms Larson chose ingredients so true to the Japanese market. I love perfumes that tell a story and this one sounds like it tells a beautiful one. I am in the USA.

  • Thank you so much for this giveaway. What intrigues me the most about Forbiden Love is it’s use of Japanese themed notes like Lilium aruatam and Saki. Green Tea, Japanese Cypress and Incense are also notes. Oud is also used which is important to Japanese culture. This fragrance sounds unique and amazing. Thanks again.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I love Japanes culture, the way of living, I would like to have a sample of this beautiful sounding perfume. I Live in Europe, Austria. Thanks for the draw.

  • Beautiful review! I was always interested in Japanese culture. Geisha life, samurai practices, and the impressive Japanese swords. I was never in love with anyone, I was never had a chance to meet somebody, who would really seduce me, so I have not experienced unrequited love. I think this perfume is a very nice one, so I would like to try it. I live in Europe.

Oh, have I ever experienced unrequited love! More than once. The opening note, “frosted, camphorous lily flower” sounds really beautiful. I’m in USA.

  • The Green Tea, Imported Sake from Japan and Vodka notes intrigue me about Forbidden Love, I live in the US and haven’t experienced unrequited love since elementary school.

  • girasole638 says:

I find it intriguing and laudable that the perfumer tried to work with only ingredients that would be found in Japan – it makes the backstory and imagery even more compelling. I think there’s a difference between unrequited and forbidden love. I haven’t experienced the former, but the latter? Well… let’s just leave it at that 😉
    I’m in the US.

  • I experienced unrequited love. while on a trip overseas, many years ago. What intrigues me about Forbidden Love, is that it is a fragrance that is personal and unique. I love the idea of a fragrance using the elements of green tea and sake. I imagine this perfume to be like a lily-strong, yet gentle at the same time. Very much like the geisha. I live in the US.

  • I love the name of the perfume Forbidden Love and the notes too sound so interesting green tea, sake, vodka, what an amazing mixture.
I have experienced unrequited love but it was at a much younger age. The only thing I remember is the bittersweet feeling it left me.
I am a registered reader living in EU and I thank you for this draw and lovely review I enjoyed the pictures and the writing too.

  • I love the notes in this one. It sounds very romantic and warming. I honestly don’t think I’ve experienced unrequited love, but hopefully I do someday! I’m in Canada and thank you
