Perfume lovers often wonder why certain fragrances become discontinued. When it comes to botanical materials, there can be several reasons: a) prohibitive cost; b) a scarcity or inability to source a similar and/or reliable quality material due to terroir or harvest conditions, amongst them. One of the most challenging aspects which the perfumer may have to face is this: often times, when a natural source ceases to be, that’s it. There’s only so much; the well runs dry. Independent artisanal perfumers like Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery understand and lament such situations – and they refuse to compromise. Recently, a customer favorite perfume, Narcissus Poeticus, was created and released in response to demand – in a second vintage version. The first iteration sold out years ago, and it has taken months of aging for Narcissus Poeticus Natural Perfume vintage 2 to be ready for sale. When I discovered that it was going to be a limited edition, I didn’t hesitate to purchase some, because I have followed Laurie’s endeavors for nearly 2 decades and have smelt all of her perfumes, enfleurages, creams, and bath salts. I am an avowed fan of narcissus to begin with, and the perfumer is nothing if not passionate about her work. Suffice it to say that my expectations were exceeded: what Laurie has composed is masterly and utterly original; more importantly, it is beautiful.

I confess to not being wowed (in general) simply because something is labeled a “limited edition”; often the term may be misleading and/or a marketing ploy. With regard to Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery, a fragrance is limited for all the reasons I stated above. Laurie doesn’t cut corners. For example – the rare Tamil Nadu sandalwood she employs was purchased 25 years ago, and its terroir will never be duplicated. Jonquil (and narcissus) thrives at the foot of France’s Massif Central, in the Lozère region of Languedoc country; its harvest is dependent upon the vagaries of climate. There are several great perfumers whose narcissus perfumes could not be completed until a reliable quantity of high-grade absolute could become available. I present these facts not as apology, but in the interest of clarity – because how else would we know? It can be quite expensive to acquire extraordinary essences, and Laurie chooses to purchase the finest ones she can find.

Narcissus Poeticus 2 commences with the sparkle of sweet mandarin and tangy sweet-tart kumquat; you don’t expect them, and therein lies the delight. What follows is highly sophisticated, as Chinese osmanthus imparts its characteristic apricot-y leatheriness: it’s companionable in concert with jonquil, which is a highly fragrant species of the narcissus family. When these two elements wed, the pleasurable barnyard and somewhat horsey animalic floral face of narcissus poeticus is conjured. The additional fruity astringency of black currant imparts its own tangy floralcy tinged with sulfur and a thiol compound (which in higher concentrations mimics cat urine) – one more example of fruit waxing animalic. Often, evoking a memorable soliflore may be more complex than one might intuit. Violet tones contribute their verdant bloom, and orris butter and Laurie’s rare sandalwood complete the portrait of this intriguing, multi-faceted floral. The end result is a seamless olfactory image quite unlike many narcissus-based perfumes to which we have become accustomed.

One of the singular facets of Laurie Stern’s work is that she composes from her own concepts – not a given brief. This allows her total freedom to follow her muse; she needn’t bend it to another’s shape or will. I firmly believe that when an artist is able to achieve this, the outcome is soul-filled and meaningful. Narcissus Poeticus 2 is proof positive, a discrete realm of calm in the maelstrom of today’s world.

Notes: jonquille, French violets, black currant bud, Portuguese kumquat, mandarin, osmanthus, orris butter, Tamil Nadu sandalwood

(* This second limited edition of Narcissus Poeticus is available as a parfum only in exquisite crystal Verreries Brosse French flacons and tucked into a dupioni silk pouch with vintage velvet flowers.)

I gratefully purchased my own flacon of Narcissus Poeticus 2. My nose is my own…

Thanks for the dreamy giveaway feature! Narcissus Poeticus 2 sounds like a soft spring poem in scent—delicate narcissus petals floating over hints of dewy greens, creamy woods, and a touch of wet earth. I appreciate how it seems both gentle and quietly persistent, like a shy flower that still demands attention. I’d love to try Narcissus Poeticus 2!
    Cheers from WI, USA

Thank you so much, Ida for your lovely review. Your words touched my heart as I love how you experienced this perfume. I always described this perfume as my weirdest perfume and everyone said I should say “mysterious” instead of weird! Your portrayal is a delight! And much better than mine. Deep gratitude!
    XOXO~Laurie

After reading Ida’s review, what captivates me most about Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Narcissus Poeticus 2 is how it embodies the fleeting nature of true artistry — a fragrance that exists only because of what still can be found, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. The way Laurie Stern layers mandarin, osmanthus, jonquil, and that rare Tamil Nadu sandalwood sounds like spring itself breathing. I love that this perfume isn’t just limited — it’s alive in its rarity.
    I live in the USA.

  • Challenges like the materials sourcing Lauier manages is part of what makes artisan perfumery so dynamic and compelling; if you love something, go for it, because the next batch might be slightly or significantly different, if it’s even still available. And it sounds like she utilizes exceptional materials. “Narcissus Poeticus 2 commences with the sparkle of sweet mandarin and tangy sweet-tart kumquat; you don’t expect them, and therein lies the delight.” What an interesting take on a narcissus soliflore! Beautiful presentation too.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway of this special fragrance.

  • Oh well just pick my favorite flowers and siren call me!! Narcissus, Violet and osmanthus I’m all yours!!! The first release was legendary. Thank you for letting me know the second has been let out to the world! Hoping on comes to me. I am located in the U.S.

  • This sounds exquisitely feminine. The blend of delicate spring flowers focusing on narcissis and exotic fruit combined with a vintage sandalwood extract speaks to a complex and potent soliflore. I’m always amazed at the artistry of natural perfumers and the knowledge they need to create the perfume they envision. MD, USA

  • Anything Laurie creates goes immediately to the top of my wishlist! I adore narcissus in fragrance, and it is seldom used; I am beyond interested to see how Laurie has woven it into osmanthus and black currant, which are favorite notes of mine, as well. Knowing Ida, whose taste is impeccable, has purchased the fragrance makes this perfume even more desirable! Thanks so much for the chance to win, and I’m in the U.S.A.

  • What a lovely review, and what a generous opportunity! Many thanks to Laurie and to Ida for drawing our attention to this inventive presentation of narcissus florality framed with tart and juicy citruses, and grounded with the depth and beauty of natural sandalwood.

I really appreciate Laurie’s commitment to her own vision, and her dedication to employing just the right materials to achieve that vision.

I’m no poet, but Narcissus Poeticus 2 has me dreaming!

I remain in the beautiful and vibrant city of Chicago, IL, USA.

  • Sara meyers says:

Oh, to make me weep! Narcissus (we call them daffodils, mother & I ) of many variety, are the absolute harbinger of spring & such a joyful fragrance to behold. Beautiful description as always, and thank you.

  • Oh my goodness, I’ve been out of the loop with Cafleurebon lately – partially because lurking on this blog tends to make my perfume budget get a bit out of hand! But I am so glad I’m back just in time to learn about Velvet & Sweat Pea’s Purrfumery. The nostalgic, vintage, exuberantly whimsical branding is such a treat. The state of the world sure is a “maelstrom” lately and can feel a bit bleak, so I’m just so glad there are artisans like Laurie are lovingly producing magical perfumes with natural materials.

This exploration of narcissus sounds so grand. Love love love that Ida talked about the animalic wink that blackcurrant can produce, it’s something I love about that note and flavor (as I drink my blackcurrant tea… the stars sure are aligning today.)

I’d be thrilled to win the prize but I feel like I already got a mood boost just reading about Narcissus Poeticus 2 and exploring the Purrfumery’s violet-drenched website. 🙂 I’m in the USA, thank you for the draw.

  • Wow! I must confess the first thing that caught my interest was the cats, but after reading the review I’m so drawn in by the explanation of the ingredient sourcing, aging etc. It’s slow perfumery, literally the opposite of the fast fashion ethic that has invaded even many smaller niche lines. I’m especially excited for the special sandalwood she uses!

  • I love jonquil, osmathus and real sandalwood. And I love cats and black currant bud absolute. I would love to smell Lauren Stern’s creation made from these precious ingredients and find out how she translated the legend of Narcissus into olfactory treasure. I am in the US. Thanks for this amazing opportunity!

  • I know Laurie’s commitment to quality botanicals, so I am very happy to hear Velvet & Sweat Pea’s Purrfumery gets to produce a second round of Narcissus Poeticus! The bright fruits in this sound amazing, and with jonquil and sandalwood, a complex spring floral. Laurie and Ida, thank you for the chance to try this treasure.

  • That combo of very strong personality scents sparked my interest for this one! Seems animal-y with unique kumquat and violet notes. I wonder how these notes will sit with certain skin chemistries.

As I read Ida’s review of Narcissus Poeticus 2, I truly got a sense of the precious materials that Laurie Stern uses to create her remarkable fragrances. This was fascinating to read, a look at why some beloved fragrances must be discontinued. I am intrigued by the use of the kumquat note in this fragrance. It surely adds an interesting facet to the exquisite narcissus note.
    I live in the USA.

  • Like Ida, I am an avid fan of narcissus. I need to try any fragrance that features the note. Laurie’s composition, Narcissus Poeticus 2, sounds very beautiful. The notes of violet, black currant, orris butter, and sandalwood sound like they give the fragrance gorgeous facets. Ida says, “The end result is a seamless olfactory image quite unlike many narcissus-based perfumes to which we have become accustomed.” I am intrigued even more by Narcissus Poeticus 2 and would love to experience it.

Thank you, Ida, for the beautiful review, and thank you to Laurie Stern for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.
