Sy Trong is a perfumer worth discovering. Operating from Vietnam, he is an olfactive artist whose work I’ve admired for years, with his compositions drawing inspiration and direction from the music that moves him. Many first took note from his award Art and Olfaction Award winning perfume Molotov Cocktail, a cold meditation on the moment of explosion, one that makes me think of Clarice Listpector’s novel The Passion According to G.H., to his personal Sylhouette Parfums, you feel his deep passion for perfume.  Deity for Ataraxia  an Art and Olfaction 2026 Finalist, ventures into extremes across the spectrum, whereas his compositions for emerging house Arnué demonstrate restraint and precision, yet his distinctive artistic voice remains unmistakably present in each creation. There’s a boldness and form to them.

Sylhouette Parfums, however, is where Sy Trong ventures into emotional depths and shadows. Teenage angst was transformed into a collection of perfumes that questions the complexities of human experience. They nod to vintages of the past but feel like a singular voice, rich and opulent, bathed in musks and darkness. To compliment his perfumery, he also creates striking collage artworks. Here are three Sylhouette Parfums you should be wearing, two from the Les Vanités collection and one from Les Luminaires Silencieux.

Poème Noir (2024): Poème Noir feels like a pen has been dipped into ink and swirled in a glass of whisky, then pulled out and a stunning ode to tuberose and jasmine has been written with its drunken ink. Poemè Noir drips with a smooth richness licked by dark caramel making it darkly delicious, as you feel seductive kisses over your skin from fleshy cool tuberose lips. Poème Noir’s tuberose warms up as the whisky goes down its neck, vibrating with sensual spices with little bites from its balsamic facets. A dark jasmine purrs of its carnal desires in your ear. Silken petals with a delightful coolness swirl amid deeper notes, creating an impression of floral intoxication.

The composition moves fluidly with warm undertones as musks craft an inky, dreamlike atmosphere. Tuberose seduces you, leading you through the haze of the woody tobacco and whisky, its warm spices purr as its drunken scent envelopes you in a soft fuzz of oakmoss. A soft chypre with ashy, almost leathery qualities appears in the base, yet in Poemè Noir, this leather transforms into a sensual carnation, its spice refined, with the gentle texture of it tight petals caressing your skin.

Poemè Noir purrs with a delicate animalic fur and intimate warmth giving a subliminal seductive aroma haunted still by the whiskey. Softly smoky with refined woody darkness and muskiness that lingers mysteriously in the air, Poemè Noir creates a beautiful ambiance like gentle echoes vibrate from its sensual core. The tuberose sings on my skin, continuously oozing with fleshy desire, a dark sensuality lingering in the shadows. Poème Noir is a very sexy perfume, that feels like dark bars and love under low lights, that kind of passion that biteable, its desire wild in the air. This is desire, this is a beautiful darkness. This is Poème Noir.

Notes: Aged Whisky, Tuberose Absolute, Night Blooming Jasmine, Carnation Absolute, Tobacco Absolute, Ink, Oakmoss Absolute, Vintage Musk.

Sylhouette Desir Noir

Desir Noir (2024): Shh don’t tell too many about this one because I was obsessed with Desir Noir from the first moment I smelled it. Desir Noir is a rich powdery iris that’s had soft fresh cigarette smoke blown over it, turning things into a sensual aroma that’s hard to beat for me. Honey is dripped into powdery iris giving Desir Noir an intoxicating allure with kisses of dark cacao adding deeper dark tones. Its floral sweetness is contrasted in a stunning way with the deer musk accord. Sy captures that deeply rich intensity that almost feels sticky sweet and animalic simultaneously. Desir Noir yearns and purrs. Tonka bean slowly adds a warm and creamy indulgence.

Desir Noir’s gourmand notes never seem to overpower the iris smokiness, that just intensify its powdery textures making it feel gothic. The cacao and honey give it an addictive quality that makes me want to endlessly sniff myself as the iris powder settles like dust in an old room. Desir Noir is a perfume that lives in the shadows. Thick velvet dark purple curtains hide its beating desiring heart. It feels indulgent and sensual with an edge. Its musky iris body is pure opulence, that I want to bathe in. One of my all-time favourite iris perfumes, where is my mind? It’s lost in Desir Noir.

Notes: Iris, Honey, Cocoa Absolute (Dark), Tonka Bean, Cigarette Smoke, Deer Musk, Orris Root.

Sylhouette Parfums La Lune Errante review

Artwork by Sy Trong of Sylhouette Parfums and J’s image of Sylhouette Parfums La Lune Errante.

La Lune Errante (2025): A metallic chill sweetened by a haze of florals as La Lune Errante opens. A cassis or blackcurrant sweetness softens the cold bite of space air that has an eerie medicinal twang. It’s intriguing and seems to open into an endless airy muskiness that expands like space. This sweetness fades quick as dusty musks blow in, almost like pale grey ash that would dissolve with a faint touch. There are no edges to La Lune Errante, it’s cool strangeness embraces you like the moon’s own light. Moonlight makes the familiar strange, it intensifies colours while muting others. Sy does the same within his composition, the familiar becomes beautiful strange and abstracted. Magnolia and jasmine seem to glow in pale yet intense tones blurring into each other edges. La Lune Errante is bathed in a creamy muskiness that makes you feel warm illuminated by the moon. Silky textures bloom with tuberose, and its fleshy petals reach out to the other floral stars forming a musky milky way. Lily whispers of gothic ennui, a lost wandering star. It’s searching for its moonlight.

La Lune Errante’s coolness  give way yellow hues of linden blossom’s honeyed sensuality. The florals wrap you in a delicate embrace. Tuberose adds more to this comforting feel, as cool sleek petals glide through the ashy powdery dust. There’s almost a light leathery facet, like stitched together floral petals, that with the ashy dust hints at vintage chypres. La Lune Errante’s milky muskiness still holds its aura giving it a unique sensation that feels like floating. Wearing La Lune Errante feels like bathing in the cool moonlight growing closer with someone special. It’s a stunning journey. La Lune Errante is part of the Les Luminaries Silencieux collection.

Notes: Cosmic Air, Moon Light Accord, Linden Blossom, Tuberose, Magnolia, Jasmine, Lily, Moon Dust, Moon Stone Musk.

  • The contrast between powdery iris and fresh cigarette smoke is what really caught my attention. I’m trying to imagine that combination with honey, dark cacao, creamy tonka, and deer musk—and honestly, I can’t, which makes me want to smell it even more! I especially loved the image of thick, dark-purple velvet curtains hiding its beating heart. Desir Noir sounds smoky, gothic, sensual, and completely unlike anything I’ve tried before. I live in Oregon, USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • What a great way of spotlighting this young Vietnamese perfumer. I know he won awards for his perfumes. I had no idea he was such a talented artist. The way Sy Trong creates from his own teenage angst, is something I can relate to, I had a lot of teenage trauma too. When J said that Desir Noir is one of his all time iris scents, I had to enter. • I’m curious about the moon light and moon dust smells in these. I’d love to try them. I live in Pennsylvania USA

Finally, a tuberose! It’s a shame I’m in the EU and it looks like I won’t get to enjoy it!

  • Oooh all of these sound intriguing and unique. What a fabulous collection. I have not tried this house or perfumer so I’m very curious! Im in the U.S. thank you for the giveaway sample.

I am always drawn to perfumes that feel like more than simply a beautiful scent. I especially love fragrances with depth and character that can evoke confidence, emotion, and a distinct sense of presence. There is something especially exciting about finding a perfume that feels like it was made for a particular moment or version of yourself.

  • I love how distinct each one of these scents sound, though Desir Noir sounds particularly wonderful. I feel like a lot of us are in an Iris era at the moment! But I will say La Lune is particularly interesting with the cosmic air and moon light accord. I live in the USA.

There’s something about the pairing of cool, purple hued iris and the cool bitterness of dark cacao that somehow manages to work. They aren’t contrast, but complexity. I wonder how much the honey and tonka try to bring sweetness to the dark desire….hopefully not too much, just enough to maintain an illusion of allure. In PacNW USA.

La Lune Errante is what caught my attention the most. Descriptors of “airy” and “cosmic” and “moonlight” wrapped in frequent references to musks make this one a must-smell. Seems this may be a date night sensual musky fragrance. Sounds lovely.

  • The lovely Iris and smoky dusting with the gourmand facets really makes this an intriguing and alluring scent. This seems to have a rich powder from the iris that I always can’t get enough of. Couple that with a cacao and honey. Divine! NY, USA

  • I think we all can identify with teenage angst, but being able to parlay that into a craft and art is a special gift. Both noir scents sound absolutely amazing with a unique mix of notes blended together.

What drew me in most reading J’s review is how Sy Trong translates emotional shadows and brooding introspection into such masterfully structured compositions. The imagery surrounding Desir Noir, where iris powder settles like dust in an old room against dark cocoa, honey, cigarette smoke, and a purring deer musk, sounds like a thrilling study in gothic opulence. I love how J describes those thick, dark purple velvet curtains hiding its sensual, desiring heart, balancing an addictive gourmand richness with a dusty, smoky iris texture that feels entirely unique. Sy’s work with Sylhouette Parfums sounds deeply evocative and artful, and seeing a perfume navigate dark velvet shadows with such tactile depth makes this release exceptionally intriguing. I’d love to experience how Desir Noir unfolds on skin. Cheers from WI, USA

  • I appreciate the consistent vision across these fragrances, especially paired with Sy’s artwork. All three feel nocturnal, sensual (in a few different ways), and full of bold notes that demand attention. They also present floral notes in some surprising ways: tuberose doused in whiskey; iris perfumed by cigarette smoke; a variety of white florals made cool and eerie in the moonlight. These sound profoundly compelling.

This house is new to me and sounds so interesting. I love the description of Poeme Noir being a pen dripped in whiskey writing an ode to tuberose. I love all of those notes and think I should probably sample that one. Desire Noir sounds gorgeous and moody and I absolutely love that vibe. This house sounds very original. Thanks for the draw, from the USA.
