Tempus Vitae® is an independent house that blends, bottles, and labels perfumes in small batches, by hand. The idea? To create scents that act like memory triggers, tied to moments, milestones, and personal wins. There’s something to be said for simplicity done right. No marketing big budgets, no inflated mythology – just well-crafted perfumes that know how to hold a memory, and hand it back to you in a bottle.  And today, we feast on a delicious one!

In the words of Creative Director and Founder Timothy Hooks of Tempus Vitae®: ”I always enjoyed a rich French vanilla ice cream and also a freshly made crème brûlée. I noticed vanilla fragrances that were rich and decadent without being overdone always seemed to garner the most attention and admiration from fragrance enthusiasts and aficionados. So my end goal was to make a vanilla fragrance that checked all the boxes in terms of being unique, with a slightly smoky edge, without being overbearing, and that had a restrained desert quality without being overly sweet or syrupy.

I love a good vanilla, and I love a good gourmand. Add to that the fact that crème brûlée is one of the most nostalgic and beloved desserts of all time, and… and you already know where this is going. When a perfume promises to bottle that golden crackle – the soft custard heart, the caramelized edge, that first indulgent spoonful – I’m all ears and flaring nostrils.

perfumes that smell like creme brulee

And who doesn’t crave crème brûlée, from hearing the name alone? Its origins, predictably, are disputed – because, of course, everyone wants credit for something this universally good! Spain enters the chat, with crema catalana – a custard infused with citrus peel and cinnamon, served traditionally on St. Joseph’s Day since at least the 14th century. France counters with the Court of Versailles, where a certain François Massialot included a very familiar-sounding “burnt cream” in his 1691 cookbook – though it’s worth noting he casually renamed it crème anglaise a few editions later. England, meanwhile, claims the ultimate intellectual property rights with Trinity Cream, served at Cambridge’s Trinity College since the 15th century, complete with the college crest branded onto the sugar crust. So yeah, medieval monks, French aristocrats, and British academics have all claimed the invention of this decadent dessert. But whoever gets the crown, what matters most is the feeling: that rush of pleasure when the spoon breaks the first layer, and the scent rises… warm, sweet, and just a little burnt brûlée at the edges.

“Vanilla is one of my guilty pleasures. So many vanilla fragrances on the market use a synthetic accord. Real vanilla has so much character to it that is absent when not utilized. Using a Bourbon Vanilla Absolute as the star of the show. Accompanied by Liatris and Tonka Bean, which gives me depth to the vanilla note as well as warmth and creaminess. Burnt sugar feel was a delicate balancing act as the sweeter materials often want to take over. But I believe we were able to create something truly unique and high quality.” – Perfumer Michael Salazar

From the very first seconds of wearing it, all the way into the evening, I felt like I had the invisible hand from Tom & Jerry – you know, the one that pulls characters by the nose with a scent trail – luring people from across the office to my desk, to ask (and write down) the name of the scent. So, I blame the perfume for the acts of debauchery that followed: several crème brûlée ordered via Uber Eats, zero regrets, all spoon-scraped clean in minutes!

Let’s take out our olfactive spoon and dig in, shall we? First in – a wisp of smoke passes through the door, mysterious and inviting. Then comes a violet note, slightly powdery, nostalgic, like sugared bonbons hiding in a wooden drawer. And then – the main event – vanilla, deep and dark and endlessly seductive. It shifts and shimmers: from cloud-light vanilla ice cream to sticky, boozy, caramelized depths. Tonka beans rushes in to fluff the smoke and warm the mix, while cinnamon adds a teasing tickle. There’s a milky, custardy texture in here,  dangerously edible. Fruity hints (just a whisper), swirls of cocoa, drizzles of honey… and a floral bouquet that adds dimension and an infusion of oh-la-la-chic. Resinous shadows and burnt sugar edges frame the scene, wrapping around a delicious heart – both decadent and delightfully easy to love.

Like fine pâtisserie, this is a gourmand done right. Smoky, sophisticated, and perfectly balanced – no whipped-sugar overload, no overdose of sticky pastry notes. Just a grown-up indulgence, starting from a sweet memory and translating it for a more refined, better-trained palate.

Notes: Calabrian Bergamot, Cinnamon, Violet Accord, Jasmine Grandiflorum, Indonesian Patchouli, Custard Accord, Bourbon Vanilla, Liatris, Tonka Bean, Banaña, Cacao, Honey, Cade Oil, Portuguese Labdanum, Peru Balsam, Siam Benzoin, Musk, Castoreum, Ambroxan

This is it right here. Smoky vanilla mature scent without the sugar overdose. That is the only thing I needed to read. Nicole ya captured so elegantly the effect creme brûlée has on people and how this scent captures it perfectly without being cheap or overly sweet. Would love to add this to the collection.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

It seems like an interesting dessert with lots of vanilla but also a little pampered with floral and fruity notes. I am from EU

  • My interest was sparked by the custard accord note. Never seen that one before. US

reading this review was like a slow descent into delicious madness. Crème brûlée is already my favorite dessert (golden crust and all), so when you tell me a perfume manages to capture that caramelized crackle and the soft custard underneath without veering into syrup overload? I’m basically sold before I even smell it. The idea of pairing real Bourbon vanilla with honey, tonka bean, a little smoke and a whisper of violet — girl, I didn’t know I needed this combo until now. It sounds edible in the most grown-up, mysterious kind of way. Honestly, if this scent lures coworkers like some kind of cartoon aroma trail, sign me up.

What got me — beyond the stellar breakdown of notes — was the tone of this scent. It doesn’t sound like your average sugar bomb or candy shop gourmand. This sounds like dessert you eat by candlelight, somewhere with velvet drapes and a jazz record playing low. I love that Michael Salazar went for real vanilla, because yes, synthetic vanilla just doesn’t hit the same. Add cade oil, labdanum, and that custard accord? I’m curious how it walks that line between edible and elegant. Definitely the kind of scent that makes strangers lean in and say, “Wait, what is that?” I live for moments like that.

I’ve smelled way too many gourmands that go full cupcake and never come back. But this? The way you describe that violet puff of powder at the opening, followed by an evolving swirl of tonka, patchouli, cacao, and that rich vanilla core… it sounds layered, playful, and comforting in a way I can totally get behind. Also, liatris??? That’s such a unique touch — I don’t think I’ve seen that in a vanilla-forward scent before. Honestly, if this smells half as intriguing as it sounds, I’m gonna need a full bottle and probably a backup. Thanks for putting this on my radar!

This might be the first time a gourmand review made me feel like I was reading poetry. And not just sugar-and-spice fluff — I mean poetry with shadows and nuance. You had me at “resinous shadows and burnt sugar edges.” I love when a fragrance has those deeper, darker threads beneath the sweetness. With notes like labdanum, castoreum, benzoin, and Peru balsam — this sounds like dessert served in an old-world apothecary. Smoky, creamy, and a little wild. Like crème brûlée at midnight in a velvet robe. I didn’t think I needed another vanilla in my life, but now I’m questioning everything.

  • This review gave me a sensory flashback to my favorite kind of comfort — dessert after a rainy walk, warm spoon in hand, steam curling from the custard. There’s something so visceral about the way you describe it: the perfume almost behaves like a memory more than a scent. I love that the sweetness isn’t overblown. The idea of restraint in a gourmand is underrated, and it sounds like this one balances temptation and sophistication just right. Plus, the mix of jasmine, cacao, banana (banana?!), and cinnamon sounds like such a creative twist. You’ve officially pushed this to the top of my “must sniff” list. My only regret is not having a sample right now.

  • You had me at Crème Brûlée. Sounds just exquisite. I just love a delicious vanilla done right and this one sounds great!

  • Loved Nicoleta’s take – the ‘invisible hand from Tom & Jerry’ made me smile. I love vanilla, and the way she described the smoky custard vibe with that crackly brûlée edge has me craving the dessert.

    Sounds like a rich gourmand.

  • I’m in the USA and I enjoyed learning about the disputed origins of creme brulee which I was unaware of. A smoky vanilla with a resinous edge is what we call “my type”. I believe this is the third giveaway I’ve entered for this fragrance so let’s see if the third time really is a charm or not!

  • The part that I love to hear is using real vanilla for this. I agree there is no comparison for real to synthetic. I also love that a bit of violet was added. And the custard accord sounds amazing. It’s been fun to watch this house grow! I am located in the U.S.

Tempest Vitae is a brand that sparks my interest every time I read about them here on Cafleurebon. Thank you Nicoleta for this delicious review. I’m absolutely sure I will be head over heels for this fragrance. There is absolutely nothing to throw me off in the note structure and I love every facet. I need to get my nose on this ASAP and also find a way to save up for a full bottle of Vanille Miel Brûlée. I’m so excited for this particular giveaway. I live in Oregon.

  • Jennifer Kolesar says:

Vanilla and smoke together sounds divine, like a juxtaposition of sweet and naughty/mysterious. Both are among my favorite fragrance notes. This release sounds very intriguing!

  • Nicoleta’s review of Tempus Vitae Vanille Miel Brûlée paints a vivid picture of a gourmand fragrance that’s both indulgent and sophisticated, which immediately grabs my attention. The way she describes the scent as capturing the nostalgic essence of crème brûlée complete with its caramelized, crackly top and creamy custard heart makes it sound like a dessert you can wear. I’m particularly intrigued by the use of real Bourbon Vanilla Absolute, as Michael Salazar notes, which promises a rich, authentic vanilla character that synthetic versions often lack. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Haha I remember that wafting finger from the cartoons too! Still working on that yogic floating. lol That violet note Nicoletta mentions I find interesting though. Very much used to the idea of blending ionones with leather accords, but not so much in outright gourmands. Also curious how Michael formulated his custard accord, since I haven’t had a go at one myself yet. In time. In time. I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of eating creme brulee, but smelling it is another matter. Plus I’ve gone through numerous samples of the brand’s first 3 releases and can confidently say that Carpe Diem is one of the best incensy frags I’ve layered with some of my more buttery ambers. Like adding a deep pepper to a savoury dish. Also would very much be interested in sampling High Tea. But on the side of gourmands, I’ve certainly happy to read that Tim and Mike took a unique stance on the traditional vanilla fragrance. Chef’s kiss for the addition of honey and cade. Two releases from Zoologist immediately come to mind. You know the ones. 😉 But will it layer just as well as some of their previous releases? We’ll, have to see won’t we. Cheers to yummy nosiness. From Canada.

  • Ramses Perez says:

It’s no surprise to frequent readers here that gourmands to me come first. It also adds to the festivities that this one has my favorite note, vanilla. Michael Salazar truly created this thinking of me because crème brûlée happens to be top 5 deserts for me. I can’t help but savor a decadent and delicious crème brûlée with some added vanilla and honey drizzle over it. That’s what I imagine wearing this fragrance feels like and I can’t wait to either sample it or get my hands on a bottle. I’m located in the USA.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Nicoleta! Your description of Tempus Vitae Vanille Miel Brulee truly brings it to life.
What sounds particularly special and well-executed about this perfume, based on your words, is the way it seems to handle the key notes – achieving that specific “brulee” caramelized edge alongside the warmth of vanilla and honey, without becoming overly sweet or simplistic. That nuanced balance you captured, suggesting it’s a gourmand with depth and elegance rather than just a sugar bomb, is what makes it sound truly unique and appealing. The interplay you described sounds utterly captivating.
Seeing the giveaway is fantastic! It would be a dream to experience the beautiful complexity of this fragrance after reading your insightful review. Thank you for the generous opportunity.from Philippines!

  • What really draws me to Vanille Miel Brûlée is the way it’s described as more than just a sweet treat—it’s a refined, textured gourmand. The blend of creamy vanilla, honey, and a hint of smoke sounds comforting yet elegant. I’m especially intrigued by the idea of it evolving on skin like a perfectly crafted dessert with depth and warmth.

  • Nicoleta’s review had me drooling halfway through — I could practically hear the sugar crust cracking and smell that custardy vanilla cloud floating up. I love that Vanille Miel Brûlée isn’t just sweet for sweetness’ sake, but built with balance: smoke, florals, tonka, patchouli, even a whisper of violet bonbons… it sounds like a grown-up crème brûlée with a secret dark side. The kind of scent that makes people follow you down hallways asking ”what are you wearing?” I live in France and I’d love to wear this indulgent memory in a bottle!

  • Yassine Staili says:

As a gourmand fragrance enthusiast, Nicoleta’s review of Vanille Miel Brûlée truly resonated with me. The depiction of the fragrance capturing the essence of crème brûlée—the smoky caramelized sugar, velvety custard, and nuanced vanilla—paints an irresistible olfactory picture. Michael Salazar’s emphasis on using authentic Bourbon Vanilla Absolute, complemented by Liatris and Tonka Bean, suggests a depth and warmth that’s often missing in synthetic vanilla scents. The balance between sweetness and smokiness, as described, hints at a sophisticated gourmand that entices without overwhelming.
This fragrance reminded me of another gourmand perfume!! Layered’s Vanilla Dreams, which also blends smoky warmth with soft vanilla, though I imagine Vanille Miel Brûlée takes it to a much more refined level.
Thanks for such a beautifully written review and for the generous giveaway opportunity. This scent is officially on my wishlist now .
    Warm greetings from Agadir, Morocco.

  • Even at the beginning of summer where warm vanilla is being overtaken by bright citruses this scent still sounds amazing. I thought vanilla was done but it seems like this perfume refines it to perfection. In maryland.

  • I love creme brulee and I would even love to smell like it!
I found it very interesting that this one in particular opens with a smokey-violet accord, proceeding to deepen and thicken when vanilla, tonka and sugar kicks in. The fact that the perfumer managed to keep the burnt sugar / crust texture (which makes creme brulee so unique as a dessert) is quite remarkable!
Thanks Nicoleta for an interesting (and mouth-watering) read.

Wonderful review, Nicoleta! Your description of Tempus Vitae Vanille Miel Brulee makes it sound absolutely captivating.
Based on your insights, what sounds particularly appealing about this fragrance is the interplay of its notes. That specific combination of the rich Vanilla, warm Honey, and especially the unique ‘Brulee’ accord you described sounds incredibly well-executed. It sounds like these notes come together to create a gourmand that is comforting and deeply inviting, yet clearly sophisticated and balanced, avoiding any cloying sweetness.
Seeing the giveaway is fantastic! I would be so thrilled to have the chance to experience the beauty of these notes and this fragrance firsthand.

I have come to realize in my old age that my tastes have changed, and I find that sweetish, gourmand-ish fragrances really hit the spot for me. When subtle and well done, they can be comforting and easy to wear. Nicoleta’s review and comparisons to crème brûlée, my favorite dessert, is intriguing and I would love to try it! I’m in the US.

  • Such a beautifully written article! And such a wonderful blend of gourmand notes. I love this quote – “Tonka beans rushes in to fluff the smoke and warm the mix”. I’ve never owned anything from this perfume house. I’d love this to be my first!

  • Always a pleasure to read any of Nicoleta’s reviews. This one really sounds like the perfect gourmand but in the really niche type of way, so i’m curious about it. Based in the EU.

  • Jenna Park says:

Vanille Miel Brulle sounds like a show stopping gourmond. I love a vanilla note especially when its one of the star notes in a fragrance. What interests me about this fragrance is the combination of notes. Vanilla with a little smoke luscious Creme brulle with a hint of floral then Tonka to round it out. How could it go wrong? Most scents i need to try first but this one is know will be a magic dessert in a bottle. It sounds like Tempus Vitea takes a lot of pride in making their fragrances and ensuring the quality is top notch with small batches that show their scents are a labor of love. That also makes me want to have this fragrance. Im in Pennsylvania USA

  • With vanilla ranking in top as my absolute favorite note, this definitely strikes a chord. So many scents that flood the market right now altough greatly marketed are poorly executed and highly synthetic. Using quality raw materials along with an experienced nose are key factors to a picture perfect scent which not only evokes images of its inspiration, but is a true to life (and smell) trip down memory lane, all beautifully highlighted by Nicoleta’s review.

Would be very intrigued to sampke this particular creation.
    Thanks for the draw

  • This is a true art in a bottle example. So many luxurious facets and it goes in a sweet and regal direction throughout. I can’t imagine how it wears on skin but I’m sure it sticks around and has standing power throughout. Vanilla in late fall throughout the winter is a stunner. I would love to own this sweet treat and cherish it as an evening stunner to wear out. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • Well, if this smells anything like the photos used to illustrate the perfume, I’m all in! Smoky bourbon vanilla sounds delicious and with the addition of a creme brulee note, yum! Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Crème Brûlée is the perfect dessert for me. Simple yet luxurious when quality ingredients are used. Vanilla Miel Brûlée uses quality notes with a bourbon vanilla absolute supported by tonka and liatris. The floral, spice and citrus notes seem subtle gently supporting the custard star. MD, USA.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I love the notes. I’m basically sold before I even smell it. The idea of pairing real Bourbon vanilla with honey, tonka bean, a little smoke and a whisper of violet . From PA, USA

  • The smoky aspect of Vanille Miel Brûlée sounds like the secret to keeping it from being too sticky sweet—or “restrained” desert quality, as Hooks described it. The violet is also a clever way of adding complexity to the rich bourbon vanilla and fruity undertones. Decadent.

    I’m in the USA.

  • libangeddy says:

I’m so interested in this and how well it can manage to stand out while being a vanilla forward scent and by this description I think it might just have what it takes. Something I look for in vanilla scent reviews is if it’s described as showing restraint in the sweet syrupy qualities bc many over do it. But this reads as though it hits the spot and delivers exactly the kind of depth and sophistication I’m looking for. I live in the USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

This sounds amazing. I love creme brûlée. I love that this isn’t over sweet and sticky. It does sound decadent. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • carrie_earle says:

What I get from Nicole’s review is that this is a “grown up” gourmand, sweet but not sugary. This was instantly added to my must sample list after seeing that banana is listed in the note breakdown. Vanille Miel Brûlée sounds amazingly delicious.

  • Nice review Nicoleta! I like the way Mr. Hooks Creative Director and Founder of Tempus Vitae thinks of a new scent, like memory triggers and simplicity done right. Vanilla Ice-cream and cream brulé are the lead_ so vanilla is the main raw material (here is deep, dark, seductive with slightly smoky edge without cloying). As Nicoleta says: who doesn’t crave crème brûlée. I am Catalan so I can say the same with “crema catalana” but ours has no vanilla. Choosing Mr. Salazar as a perfumer is a great idea as he masters the vanilla. In his brand there are a lot of vanillas perfumes, among others “Vanilla is my Love Language”. Vanille Miel Brûlée is a gourmand done right as the best product from the best pastry shop. I live in Spain, EU

  • As a life long lover of vanilla, I’m always on the look out for a more grown up vanilla. I love that this one has “a violet note, slightly powdery, nostalgic, like sugared bonbons hiding in a wooden drawer,”and that it shifts “from cloud-light vanilla ice cream to sticky, boozy, caramelized depths.” I’m registered in the US and thankful for this opportunity to explore this fragrance.

  • Vanilla and gourmounds are favorites of my wife. Would love to smell this on her, sounds edible! I can visualize the scent trail and love that she went old school with the tom and Jerry reference lol. Usa

What sparks my interest most from Nicoleta’s review is how Vanille Miel Brûlée captures the full sensory indulgence of crème brûlée—its warm custard heart, smoky caramelized top, and refined sweetness—all while avoiding the sugary overload many gourmands fall into. The interplay of real Bourbon vanilla, tonka bean, liatris, and just a kiss of smoke sounds absolutely irresistible, especially with that nostalgic touch of violet and creamy custard depth. I love that this is described as a grown-up gourmand—sophisticated, edible, and a little seductive. I live in the USA and would love to experience this scent memory in a bottle.

  • Mmm, Nicoleta’s review really evokes the essence of savoring a creme brulee. The smoky and powdery opening, the milky and slightly spicy body. I don’t enjoy super sweet gourmands so the description of the perfect balance of this composition piques my interest. I live in USA.

  • Ooh sounds so yummy! Honey is one of my favorite notes, but a good vanilla is always a great guilty pleasure. The part about the custard-y texture really intrigues me, as I love when a perfume can evoke 3d elements. I am from USA.

  • Froaderick says:

Love seeing Michael Salazar lending his talents here! Especially drawn by Nicoleta’s imagery of the cartoon hand from Tom & Jerry just luring others into your scent trail. And ordering a few rounds of Crème Brûlée sets the tone perfectly! Cheers from Ohio, USA! 🙂

For me boozy and custardy were the magic words. Every now and then I like to indulge in a decadent gourmand and this sounds like a serious treat. I am curious how some of the accent notes will express themselves on my skin – details like the liatris, banana, and castoreum. I’m in the USA, thank you for the draw.

  • This scent immediately caught my attention – smoky, sweet, and seductively rich. I love how it opens with a mysterious wisp of smoke and violet, then melts into layers of dark vanilla, tonka bean, and cinnamon. It feels both nostalgic and decadent, with creamy, edible notes and a floral-chic elegance. Definitely a fragrance I’d want to try – it sounds addictive and full of character.
