Vietnamese perfumer Truong Chieu Sy of Sylhouette Parfums isn’t afraid to embrace the dark in his fragrances, it’s this darkness that allows his inspired light to shine in sublime ways. His perfumes are expressions of his inner thoughts and his creativity as both his olfactory and visual artworks drip with a gothic melancholy and sensuality. They both give an insight to his visions for the Les Vanités series that Poème Noir belongs to.

His stunning and Avant Garde fragrance Molotov Cocktail won an Art & Olfaction Award in 2024. Molotov Cocktail is a wild perfume, full of intense aromas that explodes in the opening leaving you in a daze and ruptured and yet one that feels beautifully Zen as it dries down, leaving you lost contemplating life in a metallic haze with swirls of leather and char with ghosts of incense in the air. The sublime captured in a stunning way. A beautiful olfactive work to wear if you want to stand out. Truong Chieu Sy is a perfumer that feels more like an artist in the way he composes his works. Each composition feels deeply considered, with Poème Noir wearing like an ode to love written in the dying light of a candle.

Sylhouette Parfums Poème Noir has a unique chypre structure one that skips the bright citrus opening rather it delves deep into the heart, one that’s drunk on desire and sensuality. Its darkness haunts your skin feeling like a heavy mood as it weaves seductive florals through all tipsy on whiskey and love. Poème Noir uses darkness and light in beautiful ways echoing Hope Sandoval the singer of Mazzy Star’s soft intoxicating voice as she sings a delicate melody over some of her distorted guitar tracks. There’s a beautiful intensity to its softness; it cuts through the heavy textured musks slinking up against these darker facets as fleshy tuberose and night blooming jasmine make Poème Noir drip with passion.

You can feel the inky earthy swirls of a pen writing with desire as Poème Noir opens. One that has been dipped into a glass of whiskey, pulled out and stunning odes to tuberose and jasmine are drawn with its drunken ink. There’s a lightness to the whiskey note, making me think of some of favourite Japanese whiskeys, the ones that take the peaty notes of the Scottish and smooth them out with bourbon aged woods, dark vanilla and a touch of herbal botanical greens. Sylhouette Parfums Poème Noir gives you a smooth delicious seductive kiss from plump cool tuberose lips with a rich yet light darkly sweet touch of caramel. Its here you start to feel how the light and dark intertwine with each other like two lovers in the night.

You can feel the soft sensual sleek petals of the tuberose grow warm as it meets the whiskey, releasing a sultry spice with little balsamic bites, as jasmine whispers its carnal desires in your ear. The florals are tipsy with desire as a soft warm fuzzy feeling of carnation and oak mossy starts to play a little rough. As Poème Noir’s florals embrace this soft dark mossy fur, it blurs things into a warm inky haze, conjuring that sensation of being lost in a long kiss. Poème Noir‘s seductive tuberose leads you through the inky haze of the woods, tobacco and whiskey, as warm spices start to purr a beautiful feeling envelops you. Light makes the darkness shine.

The darkly sweet warmth of tobacco teases out a more playful side of the sensual tuberose, while revealing its smoky elements as it pulls itself deeper in the oakmoss and vintage musk base. It’s in this moment that Poème Noir feels more like a traditional chypre. An ashy oakmoss rubbed into a leathery rich tobacco wood chair, the one in which this ode to love is composed. The ink has dried into and earthiness as the whiskey’s ethers shimmer as if you are gently caressing the petals of a carnation, one whose spice has been tamed and satisfied, making it feel velvety as these words of love pour into the soft fuzz of oakmoss. If you get intimate with Poème Noir it purrs with a delicate animalic fur and intimate warmth giving it a subliminally seductive sensation. The vintage musk gives Poème Noir an aged feel, dusty furs and dank purrs of an older lover’s gentle smoky embrace adding a muskiness and an air that’s hard to place, yet familiar in a cosy way. It forms a beautiful dark ambience in the dry down of Poème Noir as soft floral echoes float out from its sensual heart. The tuberose sings on my skin, continuously oozing with fleshy desire, feeling cool and smooth as it weaves and flows through the darkness. It’s a very sexy perfume that feels like dark bars under low lights, that kind of passion with a biteable deep desire wild in the air. This is the kind of darkness I love to be lost in!

Notes: Aged whisky, tuberose absolute, night blooming jasmine, carnation absolute, tobacco absolute, oakmoss absolute, vintage musk.

  • J’s review of Poème Noir instantly captivated me—its smoky florals and brooding elegance promise a fragrance rich in emotion and artistry. As a niche perfume enthusiast, I’m drawn to scents that defy convention and linger in memory, and this one feels unforgettable.

The presence of chypre, my signature note, seals the deal—earthy, refined, and quietly magnetic.

I already own Romance Noire, a standout in my collection and proof of Sylhouette’s creative brilliance. Experiencing Poème Noir would be a dream, and I’d be truly honored to win the giveaway and explore its poetic depths. Cheers from NY, USA

  • Oh POÉME noir sounds intoxicating. Tuberose and whisky drunk with desire. I saw it on Instagram and had to try.
The notes read vintage musk! Never smelled real musk.

Very heady review from J! I’ve been really cautious about boozy fragrances, but the combo of aged whiskey with white florals is veeeeery interesting. Also, the Hope Sandoval was a nice touch; will surely put on Bavarian Fruit Bread before sniffing full for the full sensory experience! I’m in VA, USA.

That review is loaded with imagery! I felt I could put in canvas what I was reading. At the same time, I could feel the emotions triggered by J’s descriptions of the scent profile. I enjoyed the review so much that I read it twice! “leaving you in a daze and ruptured” and “leaving you lost contemplating life in a metallic haze” sounded ominous and almost personally threatening. Such a good review! What was the perfume again? LOL.

  • I appreciate a fragrance with strong character, so I’m intrigued by Truong Chieu Sy’s gothic sensibilities and bold compositional style. Considering the florals used here, this caught my attention: “There’s a lightness to the whiskey note, making me think of some of favourite Japanese whiskeys, the ones that take the peaty notes of the Scottish and smooth them out with bourbon aged woods, dark vanilla and a touch of herbal botanical greens.” Whiskey notes are rarely light, but smelling comparatively so says a lot about the heavy jasmine and tuberose in this fragrance, “plump” and “carnal”, and the smoky tobacco. I also enjoy a fuzzy carnation and oakmoss accord. Poème Noir seems like an artsy stunner in the classical mode and I’d love to try it.

  • So much in this review speaks to me. I am wild about fleshy heady white florals, jasmine most especially. They really can make one feel drunk, so adding a whisky boozy element must really be intoxicating. J’s referencing of Mazzy Star, the drifting vocals and the languid guitar, making you feel woozy and surrendered — I would love to smell the fragrance manifestation of that sound! I am in MA.

I love the Mazzy Star reference in J’s review of Poème Noir. I know exactly the kind of fragrance this is because of the reference. I also loved J’s description of the whiskey and tuberose notes. There is a seductive embrace in Poème Noir. There is darkness and desire running through this fragrance.

Thanks for the compelling review! Poème Noir sounds hauntingly beautiful—dark petals and spices weaving through shadows, with incense, labdanum, and subtle woods pushing it into nocturnal poetry. I love that it seems to hold both mystery and allure without being heavy. I’d love to try Poème Noir!
