Amber Bloom is the first release from Electimuss London’s new Auras Collection inspired by the scent rituals of the Roman Empire reimagined for today. Aura originates from the Latin and Greek for breeze, breath or air in motion, perfect for encapsulating the fragrance’s experience. Perfumer David Chieze of LUZI takes me to a Mediterranean grove full of exotic fruits, smelling the sea air as day become night. I dive into this fresh zingy sea of fruits, letting their aromas dry on my skin. It also makes me think of the first perfume I chose for myself as a teen, Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey. Its tart citruses and transparency is a nod to the 90s, but Amber Bloom feels bolder, sophisticated and is so much more.

A burst of lemon radiates from my skin as Amber Bloom opens. The zesty lemon combined with tart grapefruit sparkles alongside a sweet mandarin, creating a harmonious balance. I can feel each intertwining, followed by bergamot. This juicy experience is contrasted by the sensation that I’ve plunged into a refreshing ocean, allowing these tangy and sweet scents to envelop me before emerging from the sea, as the salty water dry on my sun-kissed skin. David Chieze masterfully plays with contrasts in Amber Bloom, maintaining a perfect balance and preventing it from becoming cloying. Amber Bloom exudes elegance while remaining playful, showcasing the vibrant exotic fruits alongside clean musks and an irresistibly salty nuance. David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) 1972, keeps coming to mind, Amber Bloom feels vivid quite like the colours and feel of Hockney’s painting.

Lily of the Valley is the perfect counterpoint to the exotic fruits and citrus notes. The crisp, delicate, and slightly powdery green florals evoke the elegance of French soaps, adding a delightful duality. The sweeter notes are a playful melody over a clever pedal movement that remains constant while the harmonies change. The vibrant opening notes have a polished charm and a subtle confidence with a refreshing coolness, reminiscent of sea-sprayed water clinging to my skin while the scent of exotic fruits unfolds in the air around me. I love how David Chieze captures the essence of these fruits as they blossom, with the tart elements from the initial burst transitioning into the passion fruit note.

Its darkly sweet tartness emerges with a tropical twist, delivering a tangy bite of acidity. The subtle musky floral notes resonate with the lily of the valley, seamlessly bridging and balancing the contrasting elements of Amber Bloom. This freshness contributes to the cool summer evening breeze that caresses your sun-warmed skin. A deliciously rich raspberry note adds a gentle sheen, enhanced by salty aromas that tease out its juicy sweetness. Amber Bloom is vibrant, reminiscent of a sunset in tone during this mid-section. The tonka bean facets add a more mineral woody texture due to the salty accord. This is softened by the lily of the valley, creating a refined atmosphere as I move from day into night. This saline soapiness shimmers in the heat, providing a cooling sensation as I wear it.

I can feel the salt draw the juices out from the fruits lingering around me- imagine a zingy zest in a soft haze over a cocktail glass which how it feels now in the final dry down. The sharpness of passionfruit grabs my attention, pulling me deeper where sultry, sun-kissed musks and subtle woody notes take centre stage. Tonka bean is cleverly utilized here, its gourmand qualities are toned down, leaving just a whisper of vanilla that thickens in the juices of the passionfruit, allowing me to appreciate its warm coumarin tones. Beneath this woody depth, a hint of something animalic purrs. From the dusky sweetness of the passionfruit, complex oceanic aromas seep through, a touch of the sea clinging to my skin, hinting at ambergris. Amber Bloom’s radiance captures this sensation on my skin after a swim glowing in the cool night air. David Chieze deftly uses amber woods, allowing the floralcy of lily of the valley to soften its edges, making Amber Bloom feel woody, musky and clean, its scent is elegant as it radiates around me while the warmth ignites on my skin. This is exactly what I want in a summer perfume.
