Atelier Materi Tonka Kumaru (Celine Pedriel) 2026 + A Ghost Note Giveaway

Atelier Materi Tonka Kumaru
Tonka Kumaru as presented by the brand, Atelier Materi

By leaning so hard into the almond facets of the tonka bean, Atelier Materi has made the best cherry fragrance, that isn’t a cherry fragrance. I know that sounds bizarre – I’m the one that took the time to think about it, write it down and then edit it into the core point of my introduction. But with their latest EDP, Tonka Kumaru: by infusing bitter almond oil into the stew of coumaric and vanillic sweetness that’s – let’s face it – inherent to a gourmand leaning, “tonka bean” concept, they’ve made a rich fragrance that bears a distinct cherry nuance without any of the synthetic smelling side effects that can cheapen the red fruit’s concept.

It’s undoubtedly the benzaldehyde, an aroma chemical  prevalent in bitter almond oil, that is used to flavour the syrup that maraschino/cocktail cherries are packed in, that delivers this effect. But, importantly, it’s a key effect. Not only does it serve up this cherry ghost note, but it also tonally scruffs up the introduction of the tonka bean, sucking some of the titular material’s weight and base note nature up into a higher register – something a good perfumer should work hard to do when composing what is essentially a tonka bean soliflore.

Fortunately, it’s perfumer Celine Pedriel who’s at the helm, exploring every varying facet, which means that alongside the aforementioned almond there is also cardamom, roasted barley and hay absolute used in the heart to amplify the tonka’s dried grass aspects whilst vanilla resinoid, amber molecules and musks work to bed all this and the roasted tonka bean extract onto the skin flawlessly, without either being overpowering.

Atelier Materi Tonka Kumaru is flawless. It’s a super competent study of the tonka bean that pulls at and contorts different aspects of the material’s smell to create a hyper vivid, over-exaggerated, amplified-spectrum version of it. It’s daring, uncompromising and overtly nutty in some respects but it’s just so smooth and meticulous that it will definitely satisfy the gourmand and vanilla lovers alike. It’s cozy and wearable but it’s artistic and it also does what you’d expect a fragrance from Atelier Materi to do: it makes you think as much as it makes you marvel.

  • Oli’s review stood out as a spectacular read! I am a true lover of Tonka fragrances, particularly where that note shines. Also, Oli’s admiration for Atelier Materi, along with his past reviews and awards for this brand, leaves me in no doubt that this one is worth its weight in Tonka! I am in the US,

  • Tonka Kumaru is getting a lot of love on the forums. Such an interesting review because of the cherry facet from the bitter almond oil and explained in a way that’s easy to understand. I am a fan of this house, they are true niche. This Cuir Nilam to me is patchouli extraordinaire. The ghost note ?
    Thank you Indigo perfumery USA

  • I love the idea of the almond oil bringing a ghost note of cherry. Atelier Materi tonka kumaru is getting lots of buzz
    Thanks for the great review

  • I love the idea that the bitter almond brings a ghost note of cherry. This is such a great house and there’s always alot of buzz. Chicago USA

  • Fabulous concise and evocative article. I was caught at cherry ghost but carried along by the notes.

  • Sybelle16 says:

Tonka Kumaru is a vanilla forward scent that encompasses all aspects of tonka bean; an amped-up, hyper-realistic vanilla that is nutty and smooth at the same time; flawless, daring and crafted to perfection. Additional notes of cardamom, roasted barley and hay absolute amplify the tonka’s dried grass aspects that is anchored by amber and musk in the base.
Oli emphasized the dominance of bitter almond infused with the coumaric aroma and vanillic sweetness gives the illusion of a realistic cherry without the synthetic aspects that can present when cherry is utilized in compositions. Tonka Kumaru is a well-rounded, rich scent that is intimate, cozy yet artistic as well. A beatifically crafted gourmand.

  • I loved the part of Oli’s review that discussed how there was a slight cherry note despite not having cherry in it. I thought it was fascinating to learn how that could be possible. Tonka is so interesting. I’d love to try this. I live in Colorado USA

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I love a good tonka bean fragrance, and I like how this one adds a cherry-like nuance, plus bitter almond to really elevate the note of tonka bean into something very special. I live in Maryland USA.

  • i love how oli was to the point with this review- the fragrance, again, sounds incredible. i love how the it is said that they leaned into the almond facet w/o actually leaning into it & creating a cherry nuance that doesn’t embody any of the synthetic cherry smell because let’s face it- that is a common issue amongst almond/cherry fragrances. i love how it is daring & uncompromising- i love those type fragrances. they are so effortlessly fierce. this fragrance sounds so beautiful. i am definitely a vanilla & gourmand lover, so, this is one that is now on my radar to look into, more. oli’s review was straight to the point & included enough to make this fragrance one that people would read about & definitely be eager to try! thank you to everyone for the contributions & oli, the review. i am in the states.

  • TheSentedPage says:

Tonka Kumaru sounds like a perfume come true. I am an unapologetic almond fan. Oli captured the stunning balance of warmth and refinement. I’m even more excited to experience how Celine Perdriel brings out those textured, ghostly nuances in the composition.

  • What a review! We all know and love tonka bean but I don’t think we see it be the star of a composition often enough. Atelier Materi is second to none when it comes to highlighting interesting notes and making them something special and accessible in ways you might not expect, like they did with Black Oregano and Narcisse Taiji.

Almond notes are always so funny because I think our brains associate the so strongly with cherry that we fill in the blanks and smell cherry that isn’t actually there, the same way we see a wall outlet and it looks like a face. Dissecting how tonka bean behaves and interacts with other similarly shaped notes is so genius. I need to get my nose on this asap!

I live in the US 🙂

This sounds so interesting. I would love to find a “cherry” that doesn’t smell like cough medicine. It’s refreshing to see perfumers taking risks and being unique. I love a gourmand and the combination of almond and tonka really catches my attention. I would love to try this fragrance. I am in Pennsylvania USA

  • phoenixad says:

I’m really intrigued by Tonka Kumaru and the way it explores the tonka bean in such a creamy, almond-like and comforting way. The combination of roasted barley, hay and vanilla sounds absolutely unique and cozy, almost nostalgic. I love gourmand fragrances with a twist, and this one seems both elegant and addictive. I would love to experience this creation on my skin! I am in Nashville.

  • Ramses Perez says:

I have experience this effect too when tonka bean in a fragrance mixed with vanilla and almond ends up smelling very similar to cherry. Who wouldn’t known, but it works! Atelier Materi produces very artistic and intricate fragrances that must really be experienced in skin to get the full effect. I think Tonka Kumaru is going to expose them even more on the market because gourmands are truly here to stay and this one plays with that idea a little. Not sure if I would call this one a film on gourmand but it plays in the sandbox if you will. I envision this being a hit for the house and that Atelier Materi keeps on feeding us great fragrances to consume! I’m located in NJ, USA.

  • AleksCipri says:

This is a very exciting release for me. I adore tonka beans but also almond and barley notes. I am also a huge fan of the brand and find most of their fragrances just magical. Oli’s review really makes me intrigued and happy because it describes the fragrance as a “study of the tonka bean that pulls at and contorts different aspects of the material’s smell to create a hyper vivid, over-exaggerated, amplified-spectrum version of it”. Sounds amaziiiing! Cannot wait to smell it. Cheers from Illinois, US.

  • Sounds perfect for cool spring, fall, and cold winter days. Just from the description I feel like it has a familiar persona but the almond, barley, and hay teetering in the mid make this a complex niche scent that has the right balance. The sweet and sour elements add brightness but I expect the tonka and vanilla to shine throughout. Would love to own, from USA.

  • Interest sparked when reading, “satisfy the gourmand and vanilla lovers alike”. US

  • Ensorceler says:

The way Oli describes that “cherry ghost note” emerging from the tonka and bitter almond interplay instantly caught my attention. I love when a fragrance evokes something unexpected, like that illusion of cherry without relying on the usual synthetic cues. The idea of tonka being lifted into a brighter, more nuanced register through cardamom and roasted barley makes Tonka Kumaru sound not only cozy but deeply thought-provoking. It’s the kind of composition that rewards both emotion and intellect, which is exactly what intrigues me most.

  • Wow, a barley note; that’s something you don’t see everyday. I’m very intrigued by how the perfumer was able to use benzaldehyde in a naturalistic way. As much as I enjoy the almond-like maraschino cherry taste and smell, it does undoubtedly ring a bit unlifelike. Cardamom sounds like a lovely addition to this blend. I am from New England, USA.

  • RaePerfumeSoul says:

1st of all, I really like the bottles. They look great on a self.

I am a tonka and vanilla fan. Especially the vanilla bean paste smell. It’s earthy and a bit sweet at the same.

    Hi there,

Wow it sounds as if benzaldehyde might be the answer to my recent disappointment around cherry-blossom-related scents. I also have to say I am struck by the bottle and cap design for this one. Atelier Materi certainly has earned their stripes over the last couple of years. Thank you for the insight into this special one!

Oli’s description and explanation of the cherry ghost lurking in this bottle has really piqued my interest. Love realistic cherry notes in general and really wondering about this one. I am in Texas USA

  • I was interested in Oli’s review because of the description of the grassy elements introduced alongside the expected tonka and musk. I am a huge fan of Atelier Materi and they have made some of my favorite perfumes that I’ve tried this year so I would appreciate a chance to sample this one! I live in Indiana USA.

  • Trinity33 says:

A ghost note is an interesting concept which hopefully avoids the artificiality of most cherry notes. I didn’t know that benzaldehyde is a bitter almond scent used to flavor maraschino cherry syrup. I can see the how an olfactory sense would trigger the connrction. The idea of a tonka bean soliflore is really appealing. MD, USA

  • crownroyale47 says:

What pulls me in is that idea of a cherry without being a cherry. Atelier Materi playing in that space immediately has my attention. You’re giving me that rich, slightly boozy cherry vibe through tonka and almond without it smelling synthetic, and that’s hard to do.
I like how the review breaks down the construction too, it feels intentional, almost technical, but still sensual. That balance of artistry and wearability is exactly what I look for, especially in a gourmand that’s trying to do something different.
I live in New Jersey, USA

  • “The best cherry fragrance that isn’t a cherry fragrance.” Really compelling take on a “tonka bean soliflore” with its transformative use of bitter almond benzaldehyde and roasty cereal grain textures. I’m curious how strong the cardamom is; I love that note, but I’d love to know if it’s a whisper from backstage or a main player. Tonka Kumaru is my kind of gourmand.

    I’m in WI, USA.

  • I enjoy a good tonka bean fragrance, and I love Atelier Materi, so I’ve been excited about this release. The cherry-ish tonka, cardamom, barley, and hay sound absolutely wonderful. I especially love hay and tonka bean together. Oli’s comments, “It’s daring, uncompromising and overtly nutty in some respects” and “It’s cozy and wearable but it’s artistic” make me want to experience Tonka Kumaru even more.

Thank you, Oli, for the great review, and thank you to Indigo Perfumery for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • Tonka bean, powerful nuttiness, with cherry. This appear to be a boisterous, refined gourmand. Would love to be the winner if this.

    NY, USA

  • I love tonka fragrances and Tonka Kumaro sounds delicious. I’m curious about the barley note. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

  • foreverscents says:

I am definitely on the lookout for a smooth and wearable tonka bean-forward fragrance. I am intrigued that there are many elements to the tonka bean note. The cherry nuance, as well as the grassy aspects highlighted with barely and hay notes sounds like perfection. Oli’s review has me sold on Tonka Kumaru.
    I live in the USA.

  • peppermoon says:

Tonka bean is such a versatile note but rarely the focus of a fragrance – I love my Reminiscence Tonka, which is a very honeyed tonka. I’d love to try this more nutty-wheaty-earthy tonka; the ghost cherry nuance and the barley and hay notes really pique my interest. I’m in Ga, USA

  • thatgirl_kim__ says:

My interest was sparked by the name of the perfume alone, Tonka Kumaru. I love fragrances with a tonka bean note and this one promises a ghost cherry component as stated by Oli’s review. I am typically a vanilla lover but I do like a spicy amber perfume.
As always, thank you to the brand and the team for making these bottles available to us as readers and lovers of fragrance.

  • kellyatwood says:

Super intrigued by the idea of this cherry ghost note! I’ve also been on the hunt lately for some overly nutty fragrances, I feel this might fit the bill!

  • i loved reading about the benzaldehyde and how it “scruffs up” the tonka bean. so evocative! that and it being described as flawless intrigue me. i feel i would really like this one. i am in the US.

  • Oli’s review of Tonka Kumaru is fascinating, particularly in how Oli describes the “cherry ghost note.” It is often rare to find a fragrance that captures that specific red-fruit nuance without leaning into the medicinal or overly synthetic territory that often plagues cherry-centered scents. The use of benzaldehyde to bridge the gap between bitter almond and maraschino syrup is a brilliant technical observation that makes the scent sound incredibly sophisticated. The inclusion of roasted barley and hay absolute is particularly striking. These notes provide a “dried grass” and toasted quality that likely balances the vanillic sweetness, preventing it from becoming cloying and giving it a more grounded, atmospheric feel. Oli mentions how the perfumer, Celine Pedriel, “scruffs up” the tonka bean to lift it into a higher register. This subversion of tonka’s usual heavy, base-note nature suggests a scent that is surprisingly airy and dynamic despite its “rich” description. It sounds like a masterful study in materials; daring and uncompromising, but handled with enough restraint to remain elegant.

My gratitude to Indigo Perfumery. I reside in the Northwest USA.

  • Such a mistake I made , I thought the giveaway ends tonight … I’ll share my thoughts on Tonka Kumaru anyway since I’ve sampled the fragrance.
Like Oli said benzaldehide , depending on the source could add almondy and/or cherry nuances to fragrances , sodas , vapes etc, but in perfumery it could also go into marzipan direction , and at least on my skin that’s the exact direction Tonka Kumaru is going. Unlike Oli I don’t get even traces of cherries or cherry blossom, but the roasted barley makes me think of marzipan stuffed French toast , with cardamom and woods in the background, all beautifully blended by Céline Perdriel. The fragrance is super cozy and chic.
It’s not composed by Céline Perdriel , but by Marie Hugentobler but I’m wearing Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana right now.
Thank you Oli , and good luck to those who entered in time 🙂

  • Ooh this sounds amazing, I completely fell for Black Oregano. It’s mild and wearable but intriguing and wonderfully unique. I just love the elegance. I feel like this’ll be a gourmand that isn’t super sweet which is how I like em, I’m in California, hoping to win this beauty!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the sharp and illuminating review, Oli! The idea of a cherry ghost note emerging from benzaldehyde in the bitter almond — no actual cherry anywhere in sight — is the kind of perfumery sleight of hand that makes you appreciate how much molecular architecture underlies what we casually call “smelling good.” And the way you describe Celine Pedriel pulling the tonka bean apart into its different facets, using roasted barley and hay to amplify the dried-grass side while vanilla and amber bed the whole thing onto skin, makes this sound less like a gourmand and more like a tonka bean character study viewed through a jeweler’s loupe. Atelier Materi consistently does this — makes you think as much as you inhale — and the fact that the result is still cozy and wearable rather than purely academic is what sets them apart. I’d love to try it. Cheers from WI, USA
