Pepperkorn composed by master perfumer Mark Buxton is one of two new releases for 2026 from the Italian brand Astrophil & Stella along with Sambalia. Mark Buxton’s work with Comme Des Garçons was what first got me hooked on perfume, so I’m always excited to smell his creations. Pepperkorn isn’t reinventing spicy amber perfumes, but it is bringing the genre refined style, this is a master at work. Mark Buxton’s composition wraps complex aromas around an addictive melody with a power that feels very rock and roll with a side of piquant pleasure in the dark.

You feel the guitar strings pop from a fiery upstroke of a pick with a metallic zing as pink peppercorn vibrates with heat unleashing the complex array of piquant notes. Sweet and spicy aromas crackle with electric fruity and green facets. Clary sage adds aromatic warmth as the spices form a floral chord of geranium rose. Mark Buxton captures the twang of guitar strings being strummed, as the music flows through Pepperkorn. Along with that sensation of your hair standing on end from a sensual touch. Pepperkorn is electric.

Darker more textured tones from labdanum add a gentle distortion to the mix. Clove and nutmeg brings heat to Pepperkorn up teasing out darker tones in the spices, making them glow and giving it that Mark Buxton signature riff. Pepperkorn makes me think of iconic guitar players, Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page. You have the dramatic and fearless  style of Hendrix mix with darker amber facets that bring to mind Page’s power riffing rhythm and groove that makes you move. You can feel these notes pushing forward, as creamy  and woody vanilla aromas play through first. It’s a smooth rich music that sits perfectly in the mix letting the warm and cool spiced melody play, flowing over you.

The dry down zings with high pink peppercorn notes as the low-end amber adds more bass to the composition. Earthy leather aromas emerge from patchouli and styrax with a bite of balsams for good measure. It wouldn’t be rock and roll without a little leather, bringing a shadowy sexy energy to the mix as spice embers spark. As a counterpoint Pepperkorn’s smoother facets wrap you in a delicious tonka and sandalwood warmth and vanilla glow like a tube amp with a touch of dusty musk from nutmeg. Hazy incense has been slowly rising from the vibrations of the heat and woods, as   The final movement builds into a rich crescendo of incense laced amber, with smoky leather flourishes and sandalwood.  Pepperkorn is polished elegance with a wild edge, a decadent darkness. Mark Buxton’s master craftmanship turned up to eleven.

    This fragrance sounds very interesting. I like the idea of having clove and nutmeg while also having a leather accord. This scent profile is right up my alley. I like the idea that this isn’t reinventing the style but mastering it. I have never smelled anything from this brand so winning it and being able to smell it would be very nice

    Pepperkorn brings an almost rock-n-roll vibe to an interpretation of spicy amber that has a nuanced complexity that makes it provocative with pepper becoming the star note instead of supporting note it usually plays within the compositions. Here the tones pink pepper embodies lends it a bold yet polished feel. From a fresh and green opening of clary sage and geranium paired with pink pepper, to a dark, almost leathery edge from labdanum, heat from nutmeg and clove in the middle to a resinous amber-woody base where pepper interplays with incense, vanilla, amber, musk and balsamic, resinous styrax.     Such a big fan of Mark Buxton’s work, and I love how Pepperkorn sounds in your review. I didn’t expect pink peppercorn to be the main star, I always expect black pepper to take center stage but I love how the floral and fruity facets might interact with the clary sage and tonka bean. It all sounds utterly symphonic, I’ve gotta smell it soon!

    Cistus is one of my favorite ever and this sounds like a fascinating blend. Love the comparison to guitars. I was just watching a show about the building of guitars and the complexity of both of these is about perfect.

    I too associate this fragrance with musicians but I can’t say that Hendrix or Page are the musicians that come to mind when I hear the name PepperKORN! I’m actually Coming Undone trying to remember the names of these musicians. Alas, they keep Falling Away From Me. You would have to be Blind to not agree that the notes listed look very promising. All Day I Dream About Styrax! Does that Make Me Bad? This sounds like a great Twist on the amber genre! I’m in the USA.

    Spicy ambers are one of my favorite categories of fragrances as it combines two of my favorite things: sweetness with a bit of a kick. In theory this should not work but my goodness, it works and beautifully. This fragrance also adds incense which I imagine takes it to another level. J also mentions he gets a bit of a leather touch with it which could be due to the mix of tonka bean and patchouli that creates this leathery sensation. I’d love to try this one as the fall will be here before we know it and this will truly shine then. I’m located in the USA.

    Mark Buxton has made some of the most interesting perfumes of the contemporary era, but J’s review suggests he’s just refining some of his classic ideas here instead of pushing the envelope, but I love pepper, geranium, and spices so that’s all the better for me! I live in Indiana USA

    J’s review really piqued my interest about Pepperkorn. The combination of pink pepper, clove, nutmeg and labdanum with a warm base of vanilla, sandalwood, incense and leather sounds rich, spicy and very addictive. I also liked the rock’n’roll atmosphere he describes, and the analogy of each layer of notes being equivalent of a guitar riff, a bassline or another musical aspect. However, the perfume itself sounds energetic, but also very sensual and yummy, and fit to many occasions.

    I’m not really into rock music but I can say that J’s descriptions are the best when it comes to imagine how a fragrance could be.
    This summer is too much hot and seeing one of the first “autumn vibes” perfumes makes me feel better.

    I’m a guitarist myself and never heard of a fragrance that captures the scent of the energy guitarists evoke while playing. Veeery interesting stuff!
    I would love to smell how this is captured. The sparkling notes totally make sense. I would like to experience how the softer notes come through and portray softer guitar playing on one hand and on the other hand maybe the volume and high energy of a big stack of Marshalls.

    I loved how J framed this as pure rock and roll, with the pink peppercorn snapping like a plucked guitar string right at the top. The idea of clove and nutmeg glowing darker over labdanum, then settling into that tonka and sandalwood warmth he compares to a tube amp, has me wanting to try it badly.     I love when a fragrance has a story behind it, and the whole rock-and-roll theme made it feel much more vivid than just reading a list of notes. The description of the pepper, incense, and woods sounds like something with a lot of personality.     Astrophil & Stella seems like a really cool lineup, with newer releases like Chromodoro, In Extremis, and now Pepperkorn catching my attention (plus Shanghai 1930 is a household favorite). The zingy pink pepper and geranium opening sounds like an attention grabber, especially as the opening to an incense-spiked leather and amber design.     I loved the way J experiences fragrances. I am a big fan of Mark Buxton and always thought there was a rock and roll sensibility about his work, especially his fragrances for Comme des Garçons. Every note of Peppperkorn appeals to me. There is definitely a twang to the fragrance. But warmth, too. I cant’t wait to try this creation.
