Perfumer Frank Voelkl art +art lilac wine

DSM-Firmenich Frank Voelkl and J’s image of Art Meets Art Lilac Wine.

Lilac Wine (Frank Voelkl) 2017: Watching ‘It’s Never Over,’ the recent documentary about Jeff Buckley, had me pulling Lilac Wine off my shelf. Throughout the film you see Jeff Buckley cover songs, taking those classic structures and tracks of Nina Simone or Bob Dylan and making them his own. Principal Perfumer DSM-Firmenich’s Frank Voelkl does this with the classic fougère giving us a unique interpretation with Lilac Wine. More than that ,he captures the minimal elegance and flow of Jeff Buckley voice and guitar playing, letting the notes flow over each other as the elements combine. You feel its beautiful aromatic melody, as lavender rich with plum and sage sing through the sweet floral notes the guitar, letting the strings and woods vibrate forming a cosy enveloping aromatic haze. Violet leaf adds reverb, giving space and depth letting its subtle green woody facets add a touch of ennui playing off the sweet romance of the delicate florals. Lilac Wine intoxicates you with its herbal liquor aroma, capturing that rich smoothness of Jeff Buckley’s voice, while letting the rougher woods feel like the controlled throaty rage he could unleash with command. Frank Voelkl uses darkness and light, with smooth and rough textures to capture these beautiful facets of Jeff Buckley’s performance and makes them all sing in his way in the stunning Lilac Wine. Lilac Wine is a fougère that sings its own beautiful melody. Notes: lavender, violet, plum, cognac composition, clary sage, freesia, cedarwood, musk, moss.

Principal Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin of dsm-firmenich

DSM-Firmenich Fabrice Pellegrin and J’s image of Art Meets Art Like a Virgin Unplugged.

Like a Virgin Unplugged (Fabrice Pellegrin)2024: Hitting next on the Art Meets Art playlist takes us to a different style as we’re enveloped in Like a Virgin Unplugged’s floral summer mood. Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin sprays us with pop tones loaded with desire, capturing Madonna’s classic, Like A Virgin, especially for me her iconic 1984 MTV awards performance. Art Meets Art has two versions of this classic pop track, Alberto Morillas’ Like a Virgin captures the youthful feel of a pop summer hit and the new innocent teenage fans it found, before the world got to see her performance. Fabrice Pellegrin takes this pop innocence and makes the song’s lyrics more overt. His imagining of Like a Virgin adding a beautiful dose of sensual orange blossom that drips over you like a creamy vanilla milkshake. The orange blossom shines in Like a Virgin Unplugged, it’s the main melody sung over the creamy groove with softer floral freesia flourishes referencing it nicely back into Morillas’ composition, while still feeling like a whole new mix. You can feel the synths shimmer capturing the champagne like sparkle of the orange blossom, its bitter green facets seem to thicken the milkiness of the vanilla shake into a dense silky sensation. It makes Like a Virgin Unplugged drape over you in an elegant way while the creaminess of the vanilla and florals feels like flashes of Madonna’s body from her disheveled wedding gown from her Like a Virgin 1984 MTV awards performance. Like a Virgin Unplugged is a sensual seductive pop perfume that’s feels like summer loving and a melody I always enjoy. Notes: Bergamot, freesia, Moroccan orange blossom, milky composition, vanilla.

Christophe Reynaud DSM Firmenich

DSM-Firmenich Senior Perfumer Christophe Raynaud and J’s image of Art Meets Art Sexual Healing.

Sexual Healing (Christophe Raynaud) 2017: As the final track of this Art Meets Art playlist spins were greeted by the smooth rich honeyed tones of Sexual Healing, which captures all the depth and timbre of Marvin Gaye’s iconic powerful voice. Sexual Healing has a classy suave quality with its vanilla tobacco aromas dripping with honeyed floral flourishes and seems to move at the same smooth rhythm of the songs slinky 98bpm. Ginger brings out the warm Motown Production feel, giving everything an electric glow that wears like silk as the honey melts through it. Tobacco’s rich complexities match that of Gaye’s voice, dark rich stone fruits merge with cacao facets giving a richness to Sexual Healing that’s smoothed out into a creamy croon that seems to have endless sustain. It’s got woody facets too adding a casual power and body, picking out vanilla’s woody side. Ambroxan adds that classic Holland-Dozier-Holland Motown production sheen to Sexual Healing, it doesn’t overwhelm rather it pulls everything into the mix and tweaks the eq’s making Sexual Healing feel full and shine.  DSM-Firmenich Perfumer Christophe Raynaud yet again captures the feel and vibe of the music and Marvin Gaye’s voice’ with the honeyed waxiness bringing that purr of sexual desire that oozes from the song, the kind that makes me wanna holla, especially when I get that feeling I reach for Sexual Healing. Notes: honey, ginger, tobacco absolute, vanilla, ambrox.

  • I am so excited to participate in this giveaway! All of these really appeal to me. I had to do some thinking. What really appealed to me about J Wearescentient’s reviews is how naturally the music and the perfume are woven together. It never feels forced or gimmicky. The way he describes structure, rhythm, texture, and emotional pacing makes it feel like you are listening to the song through the scent. I especially loved how Lilac Wine was framed as a reinterpretation rather than a reinvention, much like Jeff Buckley covering a classic and making it unmistakably his own. The balance of light and dark, smooth and rough textures, and the idea of an aromatic melody unfolding over time really resonated with me.

If I were lucky enough to win, I would choose Lilac Wine, as it sounds unlike anything currently in my collection and very much aligned with the kind of thoughtful, expressive fragrances I gravitate toward.

I live in the United States (New York). Thanks!

  • I love this line and the reviews matching marvins voice to the fragrance really speaks to me. I have a sample and it’s great! I’d love a bottle of Sexual Healing. I’m in the USA. Texas specifically!

  • Like any good playlist there has to be variety and Art Meets Arts scents, with their music infused perfumes that capture the essence of certain songs and their unique vibes, each perfume represents the feel of the song and vibes of the performer. Sexual Healing is an ode to the smooth, soulful timbre of Marvin Gaye with its notes of vanilla tobacco, honeyed florals spicy, an uplifting fresh and zesty ginger that brings a warmth, with the addition of dark stone fruits and a rich cacao, creating a melodic and soulful score that emulates the sultry, crooning sounds of the Prince of Soul.

  • What fun! I love the idea of a perfume playlist: it’s a fresh way of looking at what I tend to call a wardrobe. J did a wonderful job in the reviews linking olfactory and aural experience: I want not only to smell all these scents but also re-listen to all these songs. Although it’s hard to pick one I’d especially like to smell, I think I’ll have to go with Lilac Wine, as I love herbal notes and materials.
Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • There’s no doubt in my mind which of these scents attracts me most. Depth and timbre of Marvin Gaye’s iconic powerful voice, smooth rhythm of the songs slinky 98bpm, an electric glow that wears like silk, creamy croon that seems to have endless sustain and the honeyed waxiness bringing that purr of sexual desire that oozes from the song. Oh yeah, I need Sexual Healing.

  • J Wearescentient’s reviews brilliantly blend scent and music, turning notes into melodies, textures, and emotional rhythms in a way that feels effortless and immersive.
I’d love to win Lilac Wine – the unique fougère twist with lavender, plum, and woody depth sounds hauntingly beautiful and completely original.

  • Ramses Perez says:

When I first read about the house on an article a few months back here, I thought this is a brilliant idea. Taking inspiration from iconic cultural and artistic moments, events or pieces and turning them into perfume. Like the name of the house itself, Art Meets Art, it seeks to re-interpret other artistic entities and turn them into fragrances that remind you and center the wearer into that state of mind. How they do it? Well, it’s entirely up to the perfumer and how they interpret it but it’s pretty spot on what they have created here for our delight. I do have to go for Like A Virgin as Madonna, this song and her artistic vision is what I most lean towards and am familiar with. I’m located in the US.

  • Sexual Healing, perfect song naming a perfume. I am a ravenous collector, this sounds brilliant!

  • Oof what a choice!! It’s between Sexual Healing and Lilac Wine. Both masterful singers and composers. Both tragic early endings. Let me just choose Lilac Wine. All of these have fabulous perfumers. And they all sound amazing. I wasn’t even aware of this project so thank you. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I am located in the U.S.

  • I enjoyed learning about these fragrances, Like a Virgin Unplugged sounded interesting and creamy floral, but the one that most struck me was Sexual Healing. I liked how J explained the different facts of tobacco coming out in the fragrance along with the ginger making everything glow the honey and vanilla, it all sounds very smooth and inviting and perfect for right now. So Sexual Healing would be my pick. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • I enjoyed reading about these fragrances. Like a Virgin Unplugged sounds like a nice creamy floral, but the one that most struck me was Sexual Healing. I liked Js description of the difference tobacco facets present and how the notes come together with ginger giving an electric glow it and honey, woody vanilla, it all sounds great and perfect for right now. So my pick would be Sexual Healing. Thanks for the generous draw. From CT USA

  • I love how J translated sound into scent so vividly. It really feels like each perfume plays in perfect harmony with its musical inspiration. His description of Lilac Wine especially struck me; the way he drew parallels between Jeff Buckley’s voice and the textures Frank Voelkl created made me hear and feel the fragrance at once. The whole piece reads like a sensory playlist, so immersive and beautifully in tune with what Art Meets Art is all about.

But given the chance to win, I’d choose Sexual Healing in a heartbeat. There’s just something irresistible about the way it captures Marvin Gaye’s smooth, honeyed warmth in scent form. It’s the one that truly sings to me.

  • Nuvare Aenra says:

J’s reviews are a masterclass in translating the intangible, music, performance, emotion, into the language of scent. What appeals to me most is his ability to hear the perfume’s structure as if it were a song. His description of Sexual Healing is particularly brilliant: capturing the song’s “slinky 98bpm” rhythm, the “Motown Production sheen” of ambroxan, and how the tobacco’s richness mirrors Marvin Gaye’s voice. The idea of a fragrance that doesn’t just smell good but moves with a “smooth rich honeyed” groove and has the “endless sustain” of a creamy croon is irresistibly compelling. It promises an experience that’s as much about feeling as it is about smelling. I am in the EU and would love to win Sexual Healing.

  • Oh, I like every single one!
Lilac Wine because “You feel its beautiful aromatic melody, as lavender rich with plum and sage sing through the sweet floral notes the guitar, letting the strings and woods vibrate forming a cosy enveloping aromatic haze.”
Like a Virgin Unplugged because it has “a beautiful dose of sensual orange blossom that drips over you like a creamy vanilla milkshake”.
Most of all I like Sexual Healing because it “has a classy suave quality with its vanilla tobacco aromas dripping with honeyed floral” and that’s the one I’d love to win!

  • Nine years ago? Where have they been? The reviews were thorough and not overly lengthy with too many Thesaurus words. It gave the back-story, the notes and the reviewers perception. If picked I’d welcome the Lilac Wine. US

I absolutely love the idea behind this brand and discovering their fragrances were a really nice highlight at Jovoy Paris on my last trip. J’s Fabulous description of these 3 beautiful “music inspired” blends work as a reminder on how different and unique they are.
Lilac wine is a truly aromatic melody with elegant woody musks and a mesmerizing herbal boozy aroma creating so much depth like Jeff Buckley voice. Incredibly well blended and intoxicating fougere, which surprising it was one of my favorites.
On Like a Virgin Unplugged loved the beautiful intoxicating and gourmand composition with orange blossom! Perfect touch of lactonic milkiness to provide a comforting warmth and as J said : a beautiful dose of sensual orange blossom that drips over you like a creamy vanilla milkshake. So for me it was love from first sniff and enjoyed it more than the OG.
To be honest i dont remember clearly Sexual Healing, so what sparks my interesting on J’s review is the smooth rich honeyed tones combined with the suave quality of vanilla tobacco aromas. Sounds quite attractive and alluring with all these nuances of the honey, spices , tobacco, ambroxan and patchouli.
Its difficult to choose the one but the song i love and the fragrance i’d really like to win is Like a Virgin Unplugged, cause it is an orange blossom that touched my heart. A gorgeous, happy, sparkly orange blossom fragrance!
Thank you, J, for the excellent review and for the generous giveaway!

  • I like the visualization J uses in his reviews. I’d love to try/win Like a Virgin Unplugged. I’m drawn to floral scents and J’s description really sold me on this one. I’m in the USA.

  • Lilac Wine sounds so elegant, cozy and intoxicating. Frank Voelkl translated a captivating and romantic jazz piece with Jeff Buckley’s interpretation in mind. If I am happy to win I would choose Lilac Wine. From EU.

  • Hadn’t thought much of music and perfume at the same time. I’d have to say my playlist on my YouTube music is very different. Some classic rock, some zydeco, some Elvis, etc. My perfume is also varied. I went through my sandalwood phase, gourmand, patchouli, musc…..etc. I have to say my first perfume crush was Fabrice Pellegrin so I would have to choose Like a Virgin if I am the lucky person. USA.

  • Max Corvinus says:

I’m really intrigued by the way Lilac Wine seems to translate music into scent, especially how the lavender, cedarwood and that boozy cognac accord promise something rich, elegant and evocative — like a fragrance with its own soulful melody rather than just another perfume. From the review, it sounds like a scent I’d love to experience on my skin and see how that poetic concept plays out in real life. Beautifully written, by the way.
    I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Lilac Wine seems quite interesting with some unusual mix going on – plum, cognac, violet – definitely something you don’t get to see or try everyday. Please count me in for this one! Thank you!

i really love the music fused fragrance review by j- it is so interesting to me reading about this brand because when i first wanted to start my fragrance brand journey, i wanted to create fragrances that reflected songs. important songs that evoked nostalgia for me… i wanted someone to be able to hear the song, as they sprayed the fragrance & that feels exactly like this brand is trying to do & i love it. i am very inspired by how the notes are woven into the song lyrics & really adhere to the music’s entire vibe. i loved reading about this brand & if i were lucky enough, i’d probably choose sexual healing. :). i would love to experience this for so many reasons & i think it could definitely help me w/creating these inspired by fragrances myself. thank you for the review & the donated fragrance. i am in the united states.

  • Thameen perfumes are pure luxury in a bottle. The scent is rich, long-lasting, and beautifully balanced—one of those fragrances that instantly makes you feel confident and put together. It has real depth and sophistication without being overpowering, and I always get compliments when I wear it. I loved it so much that my cousin tried it too, and now they’re completely obsessed as well. Definitely a must-have for anyone who appreciates high-quality, elegant perfumes.

  • Really nice reading about all three and they all have something distinct and interesting about them, but the one that speaks to me the most is Sexual Healing. I really love the song and I wonder how and in which way a perfume can capture its essence. Thanks for the giveaway and good luck to everyone! I am based in the EU

  • Always in the mood for an orange blossom indulgence. THAT BEING SAID, i almost “can feel the synths shimmer capturing the champagne like sparkle of the orange blossom” so I will go with Like a Virgin Umplugged. The comparison with Madonna’s performance in her prime time is intriguing, to say the least, dear J Wearescentient.

Count me in and thank you for the spot, team.

    I live in Europe

  • Musical inspiration is a delightful idea for a fragrance series. Madonna, Marvin Gaye and Jeff Buckley all featured prominently in my formative musical experiences. Jeff Buckley holds a special place in my heart because he is the one I saw perform live back in the mid-1990s in Philadelphia (the now defunct Trocadero). I still love his version of Nina Simone’s Lilac Wine and love the notes in Frank Voelkl’s creation. USA

  • crownroyale47 says:

What appealed to me is how Art Meets Art translates music into scent with real emotion, each fragrance feeling like a performance that unfolds on skin with intention and soul. I love that these perfumes have a voice and a mood, blending artistry and memory in a way that mirrors how music speaks to me and meets me exactly where I am. I would 1,000% wear these going to a Ludovico concert. I would love Sexual Healing. I live in New Jersey, USA

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

J’s review of Lilac Wine really spoke to me—the way he connects scent to music, texture, and emotion makes the fragrance feel alive, like a performance rather than just notes on skin. His writing captures how Frank Voelkl reimagines a classic fougère with light and shadow, much like Jeff Buckley did with song. I’d love to win Art Meets Art Lilac Wine. I live in the Bay Area, USA

  • AromaAdventurer says:

J’s profound connection to the artistry behind both the music and the perfume is what makes his reviews so captivating. He doesn’t just list notes; he describes an experience. For Sexual Healing, he evokes the “purr of sexual desire” from Marvin Gaye’s performance, translating it into a fragrance with “classy suave quality” and a “honeyed waxiness.” This is not a loud, provocative scent, but one of depth, warmth, and controlled power much like the song itself. The blend of ginger’s “electric glow,” tobacco’s dark richness, and vanilla’s creamy woody facets sounds like the epitome of sophisticated, timeless sensuality. That’s the kind of magnetic, comforting aura I want to wear. I am in the EU and my choice is Sexual Healing.

  • Oh my choice would definitely be Lilac Wine. I am obsessed with lavender and plum, and now that I happen to be pregnant during the coldest winter, I don’t crave anything sweet or vanillic, a classic fougere sounds just right. I enjoyed reading J’s review a lot, a love how he makes the associations between music, flow, texture and scent.

    I live in the EU.

  • What I loved about J Wearescentient’s reviews is how he translates music into structure and texture, not just a note list. The way he talks about flow, reverb, rhythm, and contrast makes it feel like you are experiencing the performance through scent, not reading marketing copy.

Lilac Wine is the one that grabbed me the most. The Jeff Buckley angle, the idea of taking a classic structure and making it your own, plus that light and dark, smooth and rough push-pull, that is exactly the kind of storytelling that actually helps me picture how it will wear. Lavender with plum and sage, then violet leaf giving “space and depth,” and that cozy aromatic haze over woods, musk, and moss sounds like my lane.

If I win, I would like Art Meets Art Lilac Wine.

    I live in the USA.

  • Like a Virgin Unplugged especially draws me: it sounds creamy, sun-warmed, and almost glowing, with that milkshake-like vanilla texture that feels indulgent without being heavy. More over, the orange blossoms is one my favorite notes, so Like a Virgin Unplugged is my choise.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate!
    I live in Italy

  • These all sound gorgeous and I love the connections between music and perfume. It’s so hard to choose one of these but Like a Virgin Unplugged seems lovely and would be my choice!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the vibrant giveaway feature! Art Meets Art’s Lilac Wine feels like a beautifully composed jazz standard in scent — lavender, violet and plum open with a rich, aromatic melody that’s both soothing and intriguingly warm, while the cognac-like heart and clary sage give it a little smoky, herbal depth. The cedarwood, moss and musk in the base keep it grounded and elegant, so the florals never feel one-dimensional. I love how the way this fragrance sings its notes together feels almost musical in itself, like a timeless melody translated into perfume. I’d love to try Lilac Wine!

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Really fun branding and inspiration for fragrance. Interesting that Lilac Wine doesn’t lean into its namesake, but I assume the combination of freesia, violet, plum, and clary sage achieves a similar effect. And while I personally don’t love most heavy vanilla-tobacco fragrances, I dig Raynaud’s interpretation of Sexual Healing, with the lift of ginger and sheen of ambroxan giving the main groove some bounce and sparkle. Great list!

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose Sexual Healing.

  • Sexual healing has to be the one…When I get that feeling I think this one would take care of the need. The tobacco and cocoa probably shine throughout its lifespan, drawing others in with a shroud of dry sweatness and mystery. The vanilla is always a great addition to the base making it smoothed out and a real delicacy. Would love to own sexual healing, but like a virgin sounds like a hit as well. From USA.

  • Art Meets Art is such a divine pairing of expression. The inspiration go the fragrances is joyful and captivating. I enjoy the olfactive descriptor of Sexual Healing and would choose this fragrance for its dripping honey tobacco, its stone fruit facets and cacao dusting that floods the nose with yearning and satisfaction that Marvin Gaye’s voice does so well with his melodic and lyrical prowess. NY, USA

  • While all three scents sound nice, Sexual Healing is the most appealing one to me. Tobacco, vanilla, and honeyed florals sounds like it will smell heavenly! Thank you for the giveaway. I’m in MS, USA

  • They all spun amazing, but the Jeff Buckley comparison really speaks to me for the Lilac Wine. Great pairings of songs and creative scent! I live in the US.

  • jollyjoshua14 says:

What I like about J Wearescentient’s reviews is that they don’t feel scripted. He talks about scents the same way people actually talk about music or art, more about the feeling than just the breakdown. The way he connects fragrance to mood makes it easy to imagine wearing it in real life. You can tell he’s genuinely into what he’s reviewing and not just trying to sound clever. His posts usually end with me wanting to smell the fragrance for myself and see if I get the same vibe. I would like Lilac Wine if selected and live in U.S., Texas.

  • I enjoyed these because they read like a playlist you can feel, not just smell. J makes the music and the perfume meet in the middle, and it never feels forced, he describes the mood, the pacing, and the way it settles on you.

Lilac Wine appealed to me most because it sounds calm and intimate, with that aromatic warmth and a little shadow in the woods. The picture of the notes flowing like a voice and guitar, then lingering as a soft haze, that is the kind of fragrance I would reach for.

If I win, I would like Art Meets Art Lilac Wine.

    I reside in the USA.

  • reyessence89 says:

Reading J’s reviews of the three perfumes, I feel that I’d connect better with Sexual Healing. I imagine myself humming the tune while spraying the perfume on me. Of the three, Secual Healing’s scent profile aligns with the vibe (and the brief) the best, in my opinion. Sexual Healing, please. I live in NE, USA.

  • Rubinshtein says:

What a fun read! I kind of went through 3 different stories, 3 different moods, I felt like watching MTV again. I need to explore this brand more, but from this review the most appealing to me was Like a Virgin and its milkshake’n’white florals. Sounds amazing!
Please, I would like to participate to win Like a Virgin Unplugged, l live in the EU. Thank you!

  • foreverscents says:

All three songs make up a great playlist, but I would choose Sexual Healing. I vividly remember when that song came out in 1982. I was a new wave teenager, but when I heard Sexual Healing and the passion and longing in Marvin Gaye’s voice, I was hooked. All the notes in the fragrance suggest the smoothness and warmth of Marvin’s voice, especially the honey, tobacco and vanilla. J’s review captured all the warmth and sensuality in the song and, invariably, in the fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • Artofperfumery82 says:

Such an inspiring line of fragrances and reviews! Not to mention they intertwined music, “another form of art” with the production of these fragrances which is just pure genius and perfection. Music in a bottle just sounds so etiquette and unique! Lilac Wine is the one that speaks to me the most. Capturing Jeff Buckley’s voice in a bottle is just sensational! I love his voice and no doubt I would love and cherish this fragrance. Outstanding reviews and art period. Thank you for a chance at this giveaway and for the reviews! That was a great read for me. I would choose Lilac wine and I’m from the USA
