Neil Morris Fragrances and Aroma Sanctum Perfumes Arcane Knowledge

The new perfume Arcane Knowledge was destined to come into being eventually (Neil had long wished to co-compose a series of mystical perfumes with Akuura, but it took some convincing). Perfumers Neil Morris of Neil Morris Fragrances and Akuura Kulak of Aroma Sanctum Perfumes have been friends for 25 years – and they have created a fragrant collaboration inspired by their shared experiences of Massachusetts’ famous Witch City, Salem. Anyone with any interest in either early colonial American history or the occult is aware of its import. I first experienced and wrote about Akuura Kulak’s perfumery in April of 2014 – 12 years ago. “How does Salem smell? Perhaps, like Akuura Kulak’s Aroma Sanctum boutique, for one” (my words). Salem, the Witch City, is the infamous New England seaside town where whalers, merchants and fishermen carved out a living from American colonial times onward, until the whales became scarce. Salem, Massachusetts: a city reviled for its notorious witch trials which occurred from February 1692 – May 1693. It was this same city where Neil Morris first began selling his handmade fragrances in quaint little boutiques. Akuura, at that time, was displaying and selling her perfumes in a corner of a (now closed) cutting edge niche emporium called Fool’s Mansion which specialized in gothic, retro, and alternative clothing, accessories and art – the only shop of its kind on Boston’s North Shore. Neil and his friend just happened to saunter into the shop to browse – and when he and Akuura met, it was magic of the kindred connectivity sort. Separately, each perfumer has followed the beat of their own drum –  which led them rather swiftly to a mutual point of convergence. Both artists are drawn to the esoteric, and are well-versed in divination and astrology. Neil had taken a course on arcane wisdom under the tutelage of the famous Laurie Cabot; Akuura’s fascination with ancient erudition developed through her intimate involvement with the creation of scent (she was also living in Salem and had attended high school there). Initially, Akuura began researching essential oils when she realized that she was highly allergic to most of the ingredients in commercial perfumes, and consequently proceeded to study aromatherapy. Both Neil and Akuura compose mixed media fragrances and enjoy creating bespoke perfumes – and each has been crafting original fragrances for 30 years and more.

Neil Morris and Akuura Kulak created Arcane Knowledge

Arcane Knowledge AI by Neil

Arcane Knowledge is the aromatic culmination of two creative, insightful beings – and as such, it elicits powerful emotions. This perfume eschews the approach of being perceived as a dulcet lullaby, an erotic explosion of flowers, a paean to the vast oceans, or an herbal/green wraith. I have smelled many perfumes over the years, and there are none like it. It delves deeper than the traditional churchy incense emitted from a censer – to a more primal, visceral place which is none the less sacred.

Unlock the scent of ancient manuscripts, whispered secrets, and the flickering glow of candlelit inquiry. Arcane Knowledge is more than a fragrance, it is a key to the enigmatic, a portal to the past where mystery lingers in the air.” ~ Neil Morris

Arcane Knowledge’s initial impression, at first blush, may perhaps belie its ensuing intensity. Its introductory triad of citrus, bitter orange, and black pepper is vibrant, clear-sighted – which explains why the heady floral/herbal chapter which follows feels unanticipated. Gardenia and narcissus are no fragrant ingenues, and they are enhanced by undisclosed botanical notes; after all, Arcane Knowledge is all about mystery. Neil likens this stage to a deep breath taken in a darkened garden, while I perceive it as Persephone’s perfumed prelude to entering the Underworld. These are not dissimilar constructs; they lead us to the potent fragrant foundation which intimates dimly illuminated libraries stacked from floor to ceiling with leatherbound tomes of receipts from ancient times, sequestered secrets amassed over centuries of inscrutable wisdom. This furtive quality is implied by a balsam-abundant base of smoldering resins, frankincense, and smoky notes which I perceive (rightly or wrongly) to possibly include those of cade, nagarmotha, and patchouli (these facets are also undisclosed). I find myself in a profoundly contemplative state of awe, wonderment, and curiosity.

Neil and Akuura have assured us a complete Knowledge Collection. We, the perfume community, will eagerly await the following fragrances: Carnal Knowledge (fan me, fan me!) is next on the roster, and the third will taunt us with Forbidden Knowledge. I can scarcely wait.

Notes: citrus, bitter orange, black pepper, gardenia, narcissus, assorted rare botanicals, frankincense, warm resins, smoky wood notes, benzoin (perceived notes: cade, nagarmotha, patchouli?)

A bottle of Arcane Knowledge was offered to me for review – many thanks! My nose is my own…

  • As a gardener, I love the note of narcissus in fragrances. I am intrigued by Arcane Knowledge because of this description – “a deep breath taken in a darkened garden.” Mi USA

A indie collaborative gem inspired by Salem’s witchy history, Arcane Knowledge is a bewitching tribute that explores the esoteric aspects of the arcane and mystical, with a sharp opening of black pepper, bitter orange and citrus; it intensifies becoming quite potent from the floral/herbaceous pairing in the heart as Gardenia, Jasmine and unnamed florals emerge—like entering a perfumed, Vespertine garden The composition deepens, evoking archaic repositories with aged parchments and vanillin tomes hidden away as it evolves with a woody smokiness, incense of Frankincense, resins, leather, and other hidden botanicals creating a scent that is transformative, hinting at whispered secrets and the enigmatic.

  • I have several favorites from Neil Morris, but I have to think that the deeper he delves into dark worlds the better he gets. I do admit I know nothing about Akurra fragrances . I ordered three samples. Arcane Knowledge sits very close to the body, not willing to give up all its secrets at once. It is not what I expected, it’s not for everyone. I wouldn’t choose it to wear to a wedding. But if you’re delving into past history past times, if you want to unravel a secret, with luck this juice might accomplish it. Yes I see a full bottle in my future. Thank Neil and Akurra for the chance. I’m in So California.

  • I am intrigued by Arcane Knowlede scent profile and the perfumes that developed it. I am looking forward in trying the whole collection when they come out.

This is a strong fragrance that inspires discovery. It really prompts the wearer to dive deeper into darker territory and appreciate its intricacies. It’s weird because it starts a bit deceiving with floral notes and citruses before the drastic change into the underworld. It’s a plot twist we have seen before on other scents but with Arcane Knowledge it feels fresh. Strap in and get ready for a wild adventure. I’m located in the USA.

Oh Ida, your words capture the spirit of Arcane Knowledge so beautifully. As a librarian, I know that same pull. The sense that this scent whispers to all the stories, secrets, and forgotten lore tucked between the shelves. The trivia stuffed in my head,

The notes really do feel both delicious and beckoning, like an invitation to step deeper into a world only a few ever notice.
I’m thrilled to see how the rest of the collection unfolds. If this is just the beginning, we’re in for something truly enchanting.

  • Dear Ida & Michelyn! Thank you so much for this wonderful review! Akuura and I worked on this perfume for 10 months and now it’s finally born!! Very appreciative and hope everyone enjoys it! Love!

  • What stands out most in Ida’s review is the 25-year creative kinship between Neil Morris and Akuura Kulak, culminating in a collaboration that captures the primal, esoteric essence of Salem. The fragrance sounds incredibly masterclass, shifting from a vibrant opening into a dark, mysterious heart that seems to transport me back into the mass hysteria of the era. Ultimately, the rich, secretive base of smoldering resins and frankincense truly captivates, perfectly evoking the atmospheric weight of ancient, leatherbound manuscripts.

I reside in Arizona, United States.

  • Gabrielle says:

I was lucky enough to have purchased the first bottle released of this amazing elixir, having had the pleasure of experiencing her prior to release and let me tell you, the moment I was fortunate enough to be entangled in her fragrant tendrils, I gave myself over to her and all the mysteries she wished to share with me. Now that I have been experiencing this exquisite brew for a while, I wish I could say she has loosened her hold on me, yet she keeps drawing me in further with her fragrant delights.
I truly implore everyone who wishes to experience a scent that is not like the usual, mysterious, different yet somehow comforting, familiar and extremely welcoming to experience Arcane Knowledge.
Neil and Akuura are truly masters of their craft.

  • I am interested in an erotic explosion of flowers! I am interested in ancient manuscripts, whispered secrets, and candlelit inquiries. I am interested in expanding my arcane, carnal, and forbidden knowledges! An intriguing olfactory landscape! I’m in the USA

  • What happens when 2 perfumers with completely different tastes, creative ideas, and working methods collaborate? This! It was quite an adventure for Neil and I. Thank you Michelyn and Ida for this insightful review!

Salem is definitely on my bucket list of places to visit. Along with the history of the witch trials, there is a strong community of Wiccans who revere the earth and the attainment of knowledge. Arcane Knowledge embodies this with its emphasis on floral, herbal and earthy notes with a bright hot of citrus and spice atop a smoky resinous incense. The reference to Persephone garden before the descent to the Underworld really resonated with me. MD, USA

  • I am not normally a floral fan, but Neil Morris has such a deft hand at his fragrances that lean floral that I have loved all I have smelled of his work. The arcane book-y incense nature of this scent is so appealing to me! It speaks to my secret slightly gothic soul and a treatment that is Dark Garden is just so intriguing.! I do indeed live in the US.

  • Ensorceler says:

What drew me in most from Ida’s review is how Arcane Knowledge feels like more than a perfume; it is an experience shaped by history, mysticism, and a deep creative bond. The way she describes the evolution from bright citrus and pepper into haunting florals and then a dark, resinous base feels almost like a ritualistic descent, especially with that striking Persephone comparison. I was especially captivated by the imagery of candlelit libraries and ancient manuscripts; it makes the scent feel introspective, mysterious, and something you truly get lost in rather than just wear.

  • Wow what a review!! Persephone entering the underworld and breathing in a darkened garden? Sign me up!!! I love a white floral and I love basalmics and incense snd those two are not married enough in fragrances imho. This sounds incredible! Can’t wait to try this and the future releases.

“How does Salem smell?” is a question my long-time pen pal from Rhode Island would pose, and answer, in one of her lovely letters to me…She’s obsessed with witchiness/Salem/thoughtful entries in the fragrance playing field. This was a wonderful peek into the minds of two talented creators, and the fact that this is the first in a scent trilogy is hitting all of my inner library funnybones! Thank you so much for this intro to Arcane Knowledge.

  • What an intriguing review! I have been meaning to try Neil’s work for years and the esoteric focus here seems like a perfect entry point. Perfumes already feel like magic potions so leaning into this imagined facet makes perfect sense! I live in Indiana

  • bustednose says:

Love the mystery behind this fragrance..I loved everything I’ve tried from Neil but haven’t tried anything from Akuura. I really enjoy collaboration in the arts in general and the review does a great job of setting the background on the relationship between the perfumers and the experience of the fragrance itself. I am in Texas USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m really into incense and/or resinous fragrances, and I have a lot of them. Some of the ones from my collection which I enjoy are: Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Incenso, CdG Incense Avignon, Gucci A Midnight Stroll, and Nez Adorem, for example. “Arcane Knowledge” seems like one I’d really like. I’m interested in its floral aspects and its smokiness. I’m also interested in the notes Ida perceived because I like those notes. I think this fragrance would suit me because I’m the world’s leading expert concerning certain aspects of the esoteric. I’ve been wanting to try a fragrance from Neil Morris for a while now. Also, I would like to see what Akuura Kulak’s Aroma Sanctum boutique is like. Please count me in for the giveaway. I live in MD, USA.

  • I love the spooky occult theming and the execution. The intensity is a surprise; I assumed this would be a meditative backdrop, not an assertive presence. And the contrast between the opening and the focus on robust florals and smoldering resins sounds attention-grabbing. Very cool (and fun bottle label)!

    I’m in WI, USA.

  • I’m new to scents and this intrigued me immediately. All of these profiles are ones I’m drawn to and I would be fascinated to see how they work together. It sounds like there’s some serious alchemy happening here! Here’s hoping for a bottle in Ohio USA soon!

  • This sounds like amazing mashup of these two perfumers’ strengths and idiosyncrasies. I love Ida’s reference to Persephone’s descent into the underworld and all notes sound right on point for that kind of vision. Incense perfumes are smoky perfumes are my favorites and I would love to try this magical potion.
I am in the USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • Andrea Klein says:

Been a customer of Akuura for years back when she was at Fool’s Mansion. When I came into the shop I was the tester of couple of the new scents she was working on throughout the years. Used to travel from Central Mass just to go to her shop. Also recently tried Neil’s scents too and they are just as fab. Great review of their colloboration!
