Nothing comforts the soul
like a cup of masala chai,
you whispered, savouring the milky decoction
of black tea and cloves. Cardamom pods bobbed
like boats, in our clay tumblers. I licked my lips,
looking at your youthful Cupid’s bow,
as top notes of cinnamon and ginger
came alive, singing upon our palates. ~ excerpt from Masala Chai, by Oormila Vijayakrishnan Prahlad

There’s nothing like a love poem to start your day: the poet above basks in her cup of masala chai as she gazes lovingly upon the beloved. Bainbridge Island-based perfumer Anjali Vandermark of Anjali Perfumes captures this moment in her recent perfume Chai Chai Chai.

Imagine you are on a train journey in India. At night, the train comes to a hissing stop at a small station. On the quiet platform, a chaiwala (tea seller) calls, “Chai, chai, chai!” He serves you masala chai in a humble clay cup. You dunk a biscuit in it and savor the strong brew. Chai is more than tea; it’s a way of life.” ~ Anjali Vandermark

We in the West have only recently come to grow fond of this cosseting warm drink which is the national beverage of the Indian subcontinent. It has appeared in quite a few fragrances over the past few years, but perhaps none feel as immediate as Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai does. Masala chai is gourmand by its very nature, and there may exist a fine line between waxing authentic and the tendency to veer towards cloying. Anjali’s chai is blessedly free of syrup, and it lacks none of the sweetness or spice essential to a genuine representation. When I was offered an opportunity to sample the fragrance, I eagerly assented. I associate chai with some of my happiest early childhood memories in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s – with the neighbors I badly wanted to emulate, become, and marry. You have to love the innocence of young children.

Chai tea in India

Chai is an inextricable part of Indian life: chaiwalas appear by the side of every road, highway, and alley. Often they are the only all-night open establishments, and they usually offer tobacco and snacks. Black tea is the staple and may be one of these three most popular teas commonly found in chai – Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri. There are many regional variations, dependent upon geographical location and individual family custom. It may surprise you to find some of the other ingredients which may also be included – such as star anise, black peppercorns, mint, and lemongrass.  In western India, they frequently forgo cloves and black pepper; in Kashmir, it’s customary to brew green tea in lieu of black, choose a subtler spice blend, add a pinch of salt, and baking soda – a practice which colors the chai pink and produces a more savory tea. Buffalo milk is habitually used in India, but not necessarily in other countries – and the choice of sweetener may also vary: white sugar, brown sugar, demerara sugar, honey, or jaggery (a concentrated sugar derived from cane juice, date or palm sap in which there is no separation of molasses and crystals).

Chai Chai Chai Anjali Perfumes

Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai is truly masterful. An initial spray is revelatory: a buttery biscuit (usually thin and crisp) grabs you by the nose – and we relish it as we are encircled by spice. This first stage is utterly beguiling and sets the travelogue of Anjali’s inspiration. It lingers for a very long time before you become more fully aware of the potent black tea which underpins its aromatic bevy of cardamom, ginger, clove and cinnamon. To my nose, ginger and cardamom are the first spices to announce themselves; I am very fond of all of them – and am happy to note that clove and cinnamon wed skillfully, despite their predilection for overwhelming a fragrance with their undeniable power. Chai Chai Chai eventually softens; its presence, however – never falters. Within an hour or so, I am conscious of a warm milk accord in which the almondy, vanillic caramel tones of tonka bean appear. I am impressed by the musks Anjali employs here: they feel natural and ethereal, maintaining a ghostly personality as supporting players. A mitti accord is listed amidst the base notes; it is so subtle that I find it challenging to discern it. I confess to favoring mitti attar in perfume, and I wish that my nose was more cognizant of it here. That’s my own particular yearning, and it does not  detract from this fragrance’s loveliness one bit. Hours into the drydown, Chai Chai Chai soothes the spirit with its milky tenderness. All of the olfactory materials feel seamless – and in spite of bathing, they are perceptible the next day.

There is a stealth component to this perfume. While I enjoyed it at first sniff, its appeal grew on me and with each subsequent application, I enjoyed it more and more. Chai Chai Chai is a fragrance which appears lively and pleasurable upon primary encounter and ends up being much loved the longer you make her acquaintance. It successfully unfolds its story over time and possesses considerable longevity; this would be an excellent blind buy.

Notes: biscuit (cookie), warm milk, tonka bean, Kadak (strong) black tea, sugar, soft musk, special chai masala: cardamom, ginger, clove, cinnamon, mitti (chalk) accord

Bottle offered me for review by the perfumer – many thanks! My nose is my own…

  • Chais are my favorite drink and I have one each morning. I know that what I drink is not traditional, but the combination of spicy and sweet is amazing. I loved learning more about the culture and tradition of chai in India. This perfume sounds amazing and I love that it is not cloyingly sweet but very balanced!

  • This is a beautiful review of Chai Chai Chai! I got a travel size of this fragrance, and I really love it. I’m not Indian, but it reminds me of the tea that we brew in Ethiopia with similar spices. I agree that it has the sweetness and spice of chai without being cloying.

Ida notes that Chai Chai Chai celebrates Masala chai with its spicy notes of cardamom, ginger, clove and cinnamon, with an impressive milky accord and a buttery cookie that pairs well with the black tea of Chai Chai Chai; but the scent truly shines with its musk notes that are “natural and ethereal” and the mitti accord which both anchors and complements the composition as a whole. It is for her, a true masterpiece.

Such a loving personal way. I definitely will look for this to sniff!

Ida’s review beautifully captures the evocative nature of Chai Chai Chai. How the balance of authentic spices with a buttery biscuit accord.

I especially appreciated the historical context provided about masala chai. The fragrance sounds like a true sensory journey rather than just a simple gourmand.

I have been following Anjali for a little while now and have always heard good things about Chai Chai Chai, but I appreciate reading a more illustrative and detailed review of it – Ida’s description is so succinct that it’s almost like as if I can smell or even taste a cup of chai right in front of me! Besides being milky, I think that cardamom, ginger, clove and cinnamon are such cozy scents and those are admittedly my favorite kinds of fragrances to wear. I also appreciate reading about the longevity and how it lingers the next day — that’s something very important to me as well!

  • I am intrigued by this beautiful fragrance, and Ida’s glowing review has clinched it for me.
I too would love to experience those notes of buttery biscuit, cardamom, ginger, clove, cinnamon, warm milk and Tonka bean.
Thank you for offering this awesome giveaway and sharing that highly, descriptive review. I can imagine myself being enveloped in this one as I love and own gourmands!

I really enjoyed Ida’s review of Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai. Her description made the fragrance feel like a journey, from that first buttery biscuit and spice opening to the comforting warmth of milky tea and tonka in the drydown. I especially loved how she explained the balance of the chai spices like cardamom, ginger, clove, and cinnamon without the scent becoming overly sweet or syrupy.

As someone who loves chai-inspired fragrances, cozy spicy gourmands always draw me in. There’s something so comforting and nostalgic about the warmth of chai notes, and the way this perfume unfolds with black tea, warm milk, and soft musks sounds absolutely beautiful. The idea that it grows more lovable with each wear makes it even more intriguing. I would love the chance to experience Chai Chai Chai and add it to my collection.

I appreciate Ida letting us know this is a blind buy safe fragrance due to the life of it. Sticking with you upon the opening and lasting through the dry down over time is something we all want in a scent and Ida expresses that perfectly. And any buttery biscuit description of a fragrance with warm milk on the dry down has me sold. I live in New Jersey, USA.

Who doesn’t love a good Chai Latte or Tea? The craze is still going strong and now it’s propagating to fragrances. Even though I’m a gourmand lover, not every fragrance I wear is of that category and this one although having some sweet nuances, doesn’t cross the cloying trait. I was not aware of the history behind Chai and what it’s now become an ubiquitous thing around us, and I appreciate that CaFleureBon is always educating the children. I’m located in NJ, USA.

  • Oh my friend has been telling me how amazing this is and then another and I’ve been wanting to try this! How perfect! I absolutely love chai tea, and all tea fragrances really. I hope…

Thanks for the review! Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai by Anjali Vandemark sounds like such a vivid tribute to the ritual of masala chai.

What really stood out to me in the description is how the fragrance captures the experience of chai rather than just the spices. The opening with cardamom and ginger alongside a biscuit accord immediately evokes that comforting moment of dipping a cookie into a steaming cup of tea. As it develops, the heart of black tea, warm milk, and tonka bean feels creamy and soothing—almost like the fragrant steam rising from a freshly poured cup of kadak chai.

I also love the subtle touch in the base: sugar, soft musk, and a mitti (clay) accord, which suggests the earthy aroma of chai served in a traditional clay cup. That detail gives the composition a sense of place and memory—something that feels both nostalgic and quietly transportive.

What appeals to me most is the balance between spice, creaminess, and that earthy tea character. It sounds cozy and gourmand, but with enough realism from the tea and clay notes to keep it from becoming overly sweet.

I’d definitely love to experience how that ginger-cardamom brightness melts into the milky black tea heart—it sounds like a fragrance that captures the warmth and comfort of a shared cup of chai on a cool day.

  • Ida’s review of Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai made the fragrance feel almost tangible. I loved how she described the opening with the buttery biscuit and swirl of spices—it instantly transported me to that quiet train platform moment with a steaming clay cup of chai in hand. Her attention to the balance of spices—especially ginger, cardamom, clove, and cinnamon—really highlighted how difficult it can be to capture chai authentically without becoming overly sweet. The evolution she described, from the lively spice and strong black tea to the soft warmth of milk and tonka bean, sounded incredibly comforting and evocative. I also appreciated her note about the subtle musks and the gentle, soothing drydown that lingers for hours. It sounds like a fragrance that tells a story over time rather than all at once, and that kind of slow, cozy unfolding is exactly what I love in a gourmand scent. As someone who also associates chai with warm memories and comfort, this perfume sounds absolutely beautiful. I’d love to try it!

    Hi there,

I am such a fan of Chai! Tuesday evening I was over in Brooklyn for a class about ambient music, and I ducked into a lovely cafe where they made me an incredible chai beverage topped with rose-flavored steamed milk, plus saffron threads and salt as a garnish on top…I won’t soon forget this lovely drink! And so it was fun to read this review; the traditions and varying ingredient lists of different chai blends was yummy and I could practically smell the different notes.

I am also impressed by the fact that Anjali’s workshop is on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle. I was recently in Seattle for a business trip, and the qualities of the moist air seem to lend themselves nicely to fragrance appreciation. Seems like a great spot to invent and create! Thank you so much for this draw.

This sounds lovely and a complete afternoon experience of sipping chai while nibbling on a digestive biscuit. The regional difference Ida mentioned in making Chai are really interesting. I’m most familiar with black tea variation so Chai, Chai, Chai sounds perfect to me. The mitti (chalk) accord is an interesting addition to a gourmand. In MD, USA

This is such a special and beautiful fragrance! I am on my second travel size, lol. I am so blown away by the clay note and this is a gorgeous deep dive into the perfume.

  • Really interesting writeup about chaiwalas in India and the variations across regions. I love how she interpreted comforting masala chai served after a long day, sweet and spicy, yet “blessedly free of syrup” and delivered with the right balance of clove and cinnamon to the tea. The details matter too—a little biscuit, warm milk, and “ethereal” musks. Including a whisper of mitti attar makes Chai Chai Chai stand out from other chai-inspired perfumes, establishing a sense of place and texturing this gourmand. I’ve wanted to try Anjali’s two new cuppa-themed fragrances since she announced them, and this sounds absolutely terrific.

I’m in WI, USA. And happy anniversary Anjali!

  • Some of my favorite memories are those of watching Bollywood movies with my friend from Bangledesh. She would serve chai in bone china cups with saucers and it felt so fancy. I loved the spices and the sweet milk that added so much to the regular tea. Thanks for the opportunity to relive these memories. I’m in the US.

  • snapcracklepop says:

Very lovely review, enjoyed the geography tidbits around chai. I had 0 knowledge of that prior but I have been eyeing chai chai chai. The idea of the clay cup vessel being incorporated is intriguing. Anjali‘s passion and creativity can surely be felt and wishing her and her business many more years of good things to come!

  • I just LOVE chai, with milk, with some honey or sugar or without. I admit that I use a bag, I don’t pull out all the spices and make a great big pot. This scent sounds just wonderful for gray rainy days in the winter. I always enjoy Ida’s reviews, thank you. I’m in Seattle.

  • Caitlyn W says:

I’ve had my eye on this fragrance for a few months now and this review makes it so tempting to blind buy! I HAVE to get mu nose on that biscuit note, but I’m really interested in the mitti accord mentioned. Chai Chai Chai sounds like such a comfort scent, and I hope to smell it soon!
    Writing from California 🙂

  • This sounds amazing. The way Ida describes the opening with the buttery biscuit and chai spices makes it feel so cozy and transportive. I love chai, so the idea of a fragrance that captures that without being overly sweet sounds so comforting. I’m really excited to smell this one for myself.

I love Chai, an accurately spiced chai tea scent is one of my white whales I’ve been chasing. I have a few indie scents that are chai themed but they are more sweet, don’t have enough tea and only have 1-2 spices. I love spices, so the more the merrier. I’d love to try this one, thanks for putting it on my radar, Ida. My favorite part of this review was the detail with which you explained how each note presented in the composition and how the perfume unfolds on the skin throughout time. I’m in GA, USA.

Ida’s review certainly swept me away to India, just as I am sure wearing Chai Chai Chai will. I love that the fragrance starts with a biscuit note. That’s a lovely way to introduce the string back tea note, a note that is at the base of the cardamom , ginger, cloves and cinnamon. I am intrigued by the subtle mitti accord. I’d love to perceive that note with frequent wearing of Chai Chai Chai.
